Law. Religion. Do they have anything to say to each other? If so, what, and toward what end? And is the notion of productive dialogue between these two fields not surprising but essential? Long considered unlikely bedfellows at best and, at worst, outright opponents, law and religion have been meeting in significant ways, thanks to the seminal and ongoing work of Emory University??'s Center for the Study of Law and Religion (CSLR), where scholars worldwide come together for this express purpose. Neither belligerently butting heads nor cozying up for a t?te-?-t?te, representatives of these two disciplines are daring to look at the big questions that bridge their domains ? and are daring to propose ways of working together. These encounters go way beyond verbal sparring and schmoozing. Joining the ranks of law and religion professors at CSLR conferences are the leaders of major religions in the U.S. ? Judaism, Islam, and multifaceted Christianity ? along with psychologists, sociologists, biologists, and policy makers. Commemorating CSLR??'s twenty-fifth anniversary, When Law and Religion Meet traces what motivated the Center??'s beginnings, what has impelled its work over the last quarter century, and what fuels the trajectory of law and religion, both separately and together, as they continue in productive dialogue. This pithy, illustrated volume is one that a wide range of readers will want to skim, explore, and return to.

This collection of papers was presented at the eighteenth symposium of the Research Institute for Theology and Religion (Unisa) in 1994. The transition to a full democracy has been something of a bloodless revolution in South Africa, but a post- apartheid society can only remain bloodless if it is complemented by many smaller revolutions. These smaller revolutions are mainly concerned with the reconstruction process which takes place not only on a physical level, but also has to do with changed attitudes and a reconstruction of minds. The contributions in this book deal with very real issues like societal trends, economic and legal realities and the psychological effects of change on people. This book explores the problems and the opportunities of the challenge to Christianity in South Africa that sociopolitical change poses.

Religion Reconciliation In South Africa written by Audrey R. Chapman and has been published by Templeton Foundation Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04 with History categories.

Postapartheid South Africa's efforts to come to terms with its past, particularly its Truth and Reconciliation Commission's emphasis on forgiveness and reconciliation, is of special interest to many in the world community. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, was mandated to go beyond truth-finding and to "promote national unity and reconciliation in a spirit of understanding which transcends the conflict and divisions of the past." In contrast with other truth commissions, the TRC was led by clerics rather than lawyers and judge, and the TRC's approach to reconciliation was shaped by and imbued with religious content. The TRC submitted its final report to the Mandela administration in October 1998. Over the next two years, the Rev. Bernard Spong, former communications director of the South African Council of Churches, conducted a series of in-depth interviews about the TRC with thirty-three key religious figures. In this volume, they discuss and evaluate the following issues: •How should we understand the concept of national or political reconciliation and its requirements? •What are the differences and similarities between religious and political approaches to reconciliation? •Does national or political reconciliation require forgiveness between former victims and perpetrators? •What is the appropriate role of religious representatives in a truth commission process? And is it recommended that other countries emulate the South African model? •How do religious leaders assess the contributions and limitations of the TRC? •What kind of initiatives are contemporary religious communities taking to promote reconciliation among their members and in the wider society? The conversations presented in this volume, and the essays interpreting them, seek to illuminate issues and questions raised by the TRC model, including how to conceptualize reconciliation and the differences between political and religious approaches.
