Education is in crisis—at least, so we hear. And at the center of this crisis is technology. New technologies like computer-based classroom instruction, online K–12 schools, MOOCs (massive open online courses), and automated essay scoring may be our last great hope—or the greatest threat we have ever faced. In The Problem with Education Technology, Ben Fink and Robin Brown look behind the hype to explain the problems—and potential—of these technologies. Focusing on the case of automated essay scoring, they explain the technology, how it works, and what it does and doesn’t do. They explain its origins, its evolution (both in the classroom and in our culture), and the controversy that surrounds it. Most significantly, they expose the real problem—the complicity of teachers and curriculum-builders in creating an education system so mechanical that machines can in fact often replace humans—and how teachers, students, and other citizens can work together to solve it. Offering a new perspective on the change that educators can hope, organize, and lobby for, The Problem with Education Technology challenges teachers and activists on “our side,” even as it provides new evidence to counter the profit-making, labor-saving logics that drive the current push for technology in the classroom.

In Issues in Technology, Learning, and Instructional Design, some of the best-known scholars in those fields produce powerful, original dialogues that clarify current issues, provide context and theoretical grounding, and illuminate a framework for future thought. Position statements are introduced and then responded to, covering a remarkably broad series of topics across educational technology, learning, and instructional design, from tool use to design education to how people learn. Reminiscent of the well-known Clark/Kozma debates of the 1990s, this book is a must-have for professionals in the field and can also be used as a textbook for graduate or advanced undergraduate courses.

Digital technology lies at the heart of contemporary education provision. This book considers the key issues in the field and addresses some fundamental but often unvoiced questions about the ever-growing use of technologies in education. It focuses on the social as well as the technical aspects of these issues, giving careful thought to the people, practices, processes and structures behind the use of technologies in education. The book considers a range of current debates and controversies. Will technology replace the school or university? Will technology replace the teacher? What do we really know about learning and technology? Does technology make learning fairer? Can technology address the many educational problems and inequalities faced by people around the world? What does the future hold for technology and education? What can be learnt from the history of technology use? Neil Selwyn takes a critical look at some of the major debates concerning digital technologies and education. Study questions and annotated further reading are included to support readers, along with a companion website linking to online sources and resources.

This text deals with controversial issues about technology and its use in classrooms. Issues include the educational application and classroom implementation of new communications technologies such as e-mail, the Internet and World Wide Web; laptop computers, school television newscasts, hypermedia environments, distance education, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and the like. Rather than simply providing information, the text presents problematic issues and situations in realistic case studies and asks the student how best to deal with them. The scenarios involve such issues as commercial TV in the classroom, copyrights and fair use, researching on the Web, and online learning communities. Each scenario is introduced by a clear explanation of why the issues raised are important. Each case study demands student research and a written response outlining what they believe to be the best course of action.

Educational Technology Beyond Content written by Brad Hokanson and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-09 with Education categories.

This book is the outcome of a research symposium sponsored by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology [AECT]. Consisting of twenty-four chapters, including an introduction and conclusion, it argues that informational content should not be the main element of education, and that to provide more for learners, it is necessary to go beyond content and address other skills and capabilities. It also discusses the false premise that learning is complete when the information is known, not when learners seek more: their own directions, answers, and ideas. The authors assert that the ability to synthesize, solve problems and generate ideas is not based on specific content, although education often focuses solely on teaching content. Further, they state that content can be separated from the learning process and that instructional design and educational technology must be about the skills, habits, and beliefs to be learned.

As we approach the 21st century, the need to better link research findings and practical applications of advanced educational technologies (AET) continues to be a priority. During the five-year NATO Special Programme on AET, many advanced study institutes and research workshops focused on building bridges between researchers in and users of educational technology. The organizing committee of the final capstone workshop which took place in September 1993 also chose to focus on this theme. Three position papers, written by members of the AET advisory committee, provided the background and platform for the two-day workshop that was designed to provide guidelines for future AET research and implementation projects. Nicolas Balacheff kicked off the workshop with a philosophical review of the research issues and future research agendas. Herman Bouma and his colleagues at the Institute for Perception Research discussed implementation issues and problems of technology transfer from research laboratories to educational product development.
