Unlike traditional information systems which work by issuing requests and waiting for responses, event-driven systems are designed to process events as they occur, allowing the system to observe, react dynamically, and issue personalized data depending on the recipient and situation. Event Processing in Action introduces the major concepts of event-driven architectures and shows how to use, design, and build event processing systems and applications. Written for working software architects and developers, the book looks at practical examples and provides an in-depth explanation of their architecture and implementation. Since patterns connect the events that occur in any system, the book also presents common event-driven patterns and explains how to detect and implement them. Throughout the book, readers follow a comprehensive use case that incorporates all event processing programming styles in practice today. Purchase of the print book comes with an offer of a free PDF, ePub, and Kindle eBook from Manning. Also available is all code from the book.

Synthesizing ideas from event semantics and psycholinguistics, this monograph provides a new perspective on the processing of linguistic aspect and aspectual coercion. Confronting alternative semantic accounts with experimental evidence, the author develops a comprehensive model of online aspectual interpretation. The first part of the book critically reviews competing theoretical accounts of aspectual coercion. As an analytical tool the author introduces a computational model based on the event calculus by Hamm & van Lambalgen (2005) which makes use of planning formalisms from artificial intelligence. Detailed predictions from this framework are then tested in the experimental work reported in the second part. The focus here is on such questions as: Is aspectual coercion a uniform phenomenon or must we distinguish different types? Is aspect processed incrementally or is it computed only at the clause boundary? And finally, what insights can event related potentials yield about how the brain resolves local aspectual mismatch?

As global information systems become ever more powerful, complex, and intertwined, companies need new approaches to extracting information, transforming it into intelligence, and acting on it. In this book, David Luckham introduces a breakthrough solution that offers compelling benefits at every level and scale of the enterprise: Complex Event Processing (CEP).KEY TOPICS: Luckham first identifies key challenges faced by today's enterprise information systems, and demonstrates the "event-driven" nature of management in the electronic enterprise. He then introduces CEP, showing how it can harness the power of events to automate management without compromising managers' control. Luckham illuminates fundamental concepts such as events, causality, event hierarchies, event patterns, and rules; then shows how these concepts can be used to solve key enterprise management problems. In Part III, he presenting a realistic description of what it takes to build CEP applications that scale to real world problems, introducing the new RAPIDE event pattern language; reactive event pattern rules; event processing agents; and agent architectures. The book concludes with detailed case studies that show Luckham's CEP tools at work in the enterprise.MARKET: For all systems engineers, software architects, IT managers, and e-business system designers.

How to implement effective event-processing solutions Business people and IT professionals understand well the benefits of corporate agility and fast response to emerging threats and opportunities. However, many people are less familiar with the techniques now available to help accomplish those aspirations. Event processing has emerged as the key enabler for situation awareness and a set of guiding principles for systems that can adapt quickly to shifts in company and market conditions. Written by experts in the field, this prescriptive guide explains how to use event processing in the design of business processes and the systems that support them. Event Processing: Designing IT Systems for Agile Companies covers: The role of event processing in enabling business dashboards and situation awareness Types of event-processing applications and their costs and benefits How event-driven architecture (EDA) complements conventional request-driven SOA How to implement event processing without disrupting existing applications

Complete, Unabridged Guide to Complex event processing. Get the information you need--fast! This comprehensive guide offers a thorough view of key knowledge and detailed insight. It's all you need. Here's part of the content - you would like to know it all? Delve into this book today!..... : Even though there is no direct measurement that can determine conclusively that the driver was thrown, or that there was an accident, the combination of events allows the situation to be detected and a new event to be created to signify the detected situation. ...Now one use for CEP is to link these separate processes, so that in the case of when the initial process (breakdown monitoring) discovers a malfunction based on metal fatigue (a significant event) an action can be created to exploit the second process (life cycle) to issue a recall on vehicles using the same batch of metal discovered as faulty in the initial process. ... The financial services industry was an early adopter of CEP technology, using complex event processing to structure and contextualize available data so that it could inform trading behavior, specifically algorithmic trading, by identifying opportunities or threats that indicate traders (or automatic trading systems) should buy or sell. ...The timestamps are not required to be ascending (merely non-decreasing) because in practice the time resolution of some systems such as financial data sources can be quite low (milliseconds, microseconds or even nanoseconds), so consecutive events may carry equal timestamps. There is absolutely nothing that isn't thoroughly covered in the book. It is straightforward, and does an excellent job of explaining all about Complex event processing in key topics and material. There is no reason to invest in any other materials to learn about Complex event processing. You'll understand it all. Inside the Guide: Complex event processing, Sybase, Service management, Real-time computing, Progress Software, Operational intelligence, OpenPDC, Network management, Nastel, Market liquidity, International Standard Book Number, Financial risk management, Event stream processing, Event correlation, Event Processing Technical Society, Event-driven architecture, Esper (disambiguation), Digital object identifier, Credit card fraud, Business activity monitoring, Artificial intelligence, Algorithmic trading, Abstraction

Purchase of the print book includes a free eBook in PDF, Kindle, and ePub formats from Manning Publications. About the Technology Many high-profile applications, like LinkedIn and Netflix, deliver nimble, responsive performance by reacting to user and system events as they occur. In large-scale systems, this requires efficiently monitoring, managing, and reacting to multiple event streams. Tools like Kafka, along with innovative patterns like unified log processing, help create a coherent data processing architecture for event-based applications. About the Book Event Streams in Action teaches you techniques for aggregating, storing, and processing event streams using the unified log processing pattern. In this hands-on guide, you'll discover important application designs like the lambda architecture, stream aggregation, and event reprocessing. You'll also explore scaling, resiliency, advanced stream patterns, and much more!
