That precursors of adult coronary artery disease, hypertension, and type II diabetes begin in childhood have been clearly established by the Bogalusa Heart Study. This unique research program has been able to follow a biracial (black/white) population over 35 years from childhood through mid-adulthood to provide perspectives on the natural history of adult heart diseases. Not only do these observations describe trajectories of cardio-metabolic risk variables leading to these diseases but provide a rationale for the need to begin prevention beginning in childhood. The trajectories of the burden of cardio-metabolic risk variables in the context of their fetal origin and chromosome telomere dynamics provide some insight into the metabolic imprinting in utero and aging process. The observed racial contrasts on cardio-metabolic risk variables implicate various biologic pathways interacting with environment contributing to the high morbidity and mortality from related diseases in our population. To address the seriousness of the onset of cardiovascular disease in youth, approaches to primordial prevention are described focussing on childhood health education as an important aspect of Preventive Cardiology.

People are living longer, not only in wealthy countries but in developing nations. For too long, Western experts have conceived of aging as a universal predicament—one that supposedly provokes the same welfare concerns in every context. It is time, Kavita Sivaramakrishnan writes, to embrace a new approach that prioritizes local agendas and values.

A Biologist S Guide To Mathematical Modeling In Ecology And Evolution written by Sarah P. Otto and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-03-12 with Mathematics categories.

Thirty years ago, biologists could get by with a rudimentary grasp of mathematics and modeling. Not so today. In seeking to answer fundamental questions about how biological systems function and change over time, the modern biologist is as likely to rely on sophisticated mathematical and computer-based models as traditional fieldwork. In this book, Sarah Otto and Troy Day provide biology students with the tools necessary to both interpret models and to build their own. The book starts at an elementary level of mathematical modeling, assuming that the reader has had high school mathematics and first-year calculus. Otto and Day then gradually build in depth and complexity, from classic models in ecology and evolution to more intricate class-structured and probabilistic models. The authors provide primers with instructive exercises to introduce readers to the more advanced subjects of linear algebra and probability theory. Through examples, they describe how models have been used to understand such topics as the spread of HIV, chaos, the age structure of a country, speciation, and extinction. Ecologists and evolutionary biologists today need enough mathematical training to be able to assess the power and limits of biological models and to develop theories and models themselves. This innovative book will be an indispensable guide to the world of mathematical models for the next generation of biologists. A how-to guide for developing new mathematical models in biology Provides step-by-step recipes for constructing and analyzing models Interesting biological applications Explores classical models in ecology and evolution Questions at the end of every chapter Primers cover important mathematical topics Exercises with answers Appendixes summarize useful rules Labs and advanced material available

The association between diet and health has been identified, and a healthy diet can help prevent various cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Dietary behaviors and dietary patterns are changing, especially in developing countries; with the ever-increasing amount of processed food and changing lifestyles, people eat more foods rich in energy, fat, free sugars, and salt, but not enough in fruits, vegetables, and other dietary fibers. CVD, including coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke, and hypertension, are the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Poor dietary behaviors and patterns are risk factors for the continuing increase of CVD incidence, accounting for more than 11 million deaths.

Understanding developmental processes in the individual as well as in aggregates of individuals is an important aim of many of the social and behavioral sciences. This book presents a theoretical framework for this endeavor - an architecture for the study of human development across different disciplines. This architecture describes two major sources of human development (biology and culture) and posits three central developmental mechanisms (selection, optimization, and compensation).
