As with all previous editions of Project Management in Construction, this sixth edition focuses on systems theory as the approach suitable for organizing and managing people skilled in the design and completion of construction projects. It discusses the many competing paradigms and alternative perspectives available, for example in relation to differentiation and integration, as well as the emerging study of temporary organizations and its relevance to construction project management. Whilst encompassing the need to develop further theoretical aspects of construction project organization theory, this edition has also enhanced the application of organization studies to practical issues of construction project management. More emphasis has been placed on the added complexity of construction project management by issues surrounding clients and stakeholders, and the control and empowerment of project participants. Additional focus has been placed on sustainability issues as they impinge on construction project management, on reworked views on supply chain management and on developments in partnering, together with clarification of the shifting terms and definitions relating to construction organization structures and their uses.

Hong Kong's experience is particularly important because it plays a leading role in construction quality management globally. The text traces the change from quality control (QC) practice in the 1970s and 1980s, to the quality assurance (QA) concept in the 1990s, and finally to the emerging total quality management (TQM) philosophy. All the tools and techniques used in relation to construction quality management are discussed in detail in the 12 chapters.

This volume describes risk management practices in the construction industry in selected countries, with an emphasis on developing countries and how these countries can learn from the practices in more developed ones. Risk management in the construction industry can be difficult to understand due to the various complex procedures that are involved and to the unique concerns and contexts associated with each project. The industry has been a key contributor to the economic and social development of many countries of the world and is increasingly incorporating sustainability into its practices. However it is plagued by various risks that can affect the quality, cost, time and overall sustainability of projects. Therefore, there is need to effectively manage risk in order to ensure timely completion of construction projects in good quality and within budget, which in turn results in more efficient and often more sustainable practices. The book is divided into four parts. The first section features a primer on risk management practices as they pertain to the construction industry. The second part dives in to describe risk management in selected developing countries, including Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi-Arabia, South Africa, Sri-Lanka and Tanzania, as well as the city of Hong Kong. The third section describes the construction risk management practices of a selection of more developed countries with known risk management institutes and established practices of risk management. These countries include Australia, Canada, Sweden and United States of America. The fourth part offers a general overview of the definition, concepts and process of risk management based on reviewed literature. It also discusses the benefits of effective risk management to clients and to project teams, especially from the perspective of ensuring sustainability. This last section also summarizes the risk management practices in both developing and developed countries for the purpose of improving the practices in the former by learning from the latter.

All rights not granted by the above license are retained by the author. Abstract: Abstract The Hong Kong construction industry is still undergoing a transform. In the report "Construct for Excellence" of the Construction Industry Review Committee in January 2001, it indicated innovation implementation is required to deliver quality products in order to support the further development of our economy and to provide a better living environment for the population. Although some leading clients and construction organizations are increasingly encouraging learning and innovation within projects and seeking to make use of the process to gain competitive advantage, unfortunately, diffusion is very slow. Apart from the inherent factors of construction industry making it difficult to diffuse, Hong Kong's research into innovation was found to be lacking. Although this is a landmark development in construction, innovations introduced in the industry are rarely examined and evaluated in order to help provide strategic direction for the organizations involved or future projects. My research probably is one of the few attempt, through survey in case study to explore an overview of the status of innovation implementation in the Hong Kong construction industry. It was found that the innovation concept is not something new and there are actually some good practices of implementation in the local industry. This research presents an introduction to common types of innovation and their application to the construction industry through a review of the practices introduced in the development of Three Pacific Place, a prominent commercial building in Page 1 central Hong Kong. After close examination, some managerial concepts in strategic implementation were found commonly being practiced locally while some concepts were less applicable. Some major barriers to the implementation of innovation in the local context were also identified and evaluated in the research. I hope my findings in my dissertation can provide useful insights on the innovation that any organization, not simply those in the construction industry, can implement so as to improve performance in innovation implementation in project-based industry.
