It is the time of Patsy Cline and listening to the Red Sox and Yankee Games on a transistor radio. The main character in The Promise of Paradise Park is an adolescent girl, Vicky, who describes impassioned experiences within her family and within the neighborhood surrounding Paradise Park. Themes in the novel center around family life, diversity, alcoholism, murder, compassion, and coming of age. Vicky's naivete to dangerous situations with men is a constant worry for her mother. Often times, mother and daughter are in conflict over these situations. Vicky describes the dynamic family life that surrounds her. Her grandparents and Uncle Marky, live below Vicky and her family, in a third story apartment building. Sometimes there is a commotion down below. Above Vicky, lives Mrs. Golecki and her two older sons. Vicky's grandmother is jealous of Mrs. Golecki and displays animosity toward her. Members of Vicky's family have adverse reactions to alcohol leading to dire consequences. When the family needs to work together, including aunts and cousins who live in the neighborhood, they do so with compassion for each other. The neighborhood is diverse and Vicky enjoys the musical spirit of her black neighbors. At one point, Vicky and a friend, end up at a lesbian party at Halloween time. The law of eminent domain has a major effect on the family and the neighborhood that Vicky lives in. The family had to make major adjustments to their life plans. Much of their lives centered around Vicky's father's Liquor Store, and her grandparents' Grocery Store. Vicky had a friend, Bobby. Here is an excerpt describing their relationship.Bobby and I had our favorite spot in the cemetery, the area where gravestones from the 1800's stood, many with letters smoothed by the weather. Bobby and I liked to read the dates and the names on the markers. It appeared that a Mr. Suddy and his wife died young. He was 38, and she was 36. Their son died at 15. The three were buried side by side. Bobby and I wondered what had happened to them. Did they die in a fire or from an illness, or from something different? Bobby said there were many farm accidents years ago. We looked at the gravestones and wondered what life was like back then. Were the people all farmers? How'd they travel? Were there any snacks to eat? What games did the children play? Did they have time to play? We had question after question about the past. Vicky's intense experiences continue when she spends a summer with a friend, Barbara, at the beach. She meets two British couples, Pinkee and Earl and Martha and Reggie. and their housemaid, Elouise. A dangerous drama ensues with them. The teenagers enjoy the beach, including a concert by the Beachboys. Vicky enjoys her freedom at the beach away from her mother. Returning home, Vicky found that the promise of Paradise Park carried her and her family thru the difficult times.

The West has long attracted visionaries and schemers from around the world. And no other region in North America can outstrip British Columbia for the number of utopian or intentional settlement attempts in the past 150 years. Andrew Scott delves into the dramatic stories of these fascinating, but often doomed, communities. From Doukhobor farmers to Finnish coal miners, Quakers and hippies, many groups have struggled to build idealistic colonies in BC’s inspiring landscape. While most discovered hardship, disillusionment and failure, new groups sprang up—and continue to spring up—to take their place. Meet the quick-tempered, slave-driving Madame Zee (partner of the infamous Brother XII), who reportedly beat followers with a riding crop. Hear from Richard “The Troll” Schaller, who founded the Legal Front Commune, General Store and Funny Food Farm on the Sunshine Coast, setting off a storm of hostility from locals. Congregate with Jerry LeBourdais and fellow members of the Ochiltree Organic Commune, who rebelled from hippie communes by embracing meat eating and coffee drinking. With careful research and engaging first-person accounts, Scott sifts through the wreckage of the utopia-seekers’ dreams and delves into the practices and philosophies of contemporary intentional communities. This book is a compendium of astounding misadventures as well as an intriguing analysis of what moves people to search for paradise.

The Trees Will Clap Their Hands looks at the story of the Garden of Eden and traces its most important themes throughout the Old and New Testaments. We see how biblical writers over the centuries drew upon the story to describe the times in which they lived and to envision a new future for themselves and for God's people. Though many people think of the garden as something like the ultimate vacation spot, we learn that it is in fact the ultimate vocation destination. It is primarily a place of devotion and worship of God. This basic truth binds the Bible together from Genesis to Revelation. Through this study we discover that the garden is not just a biblical or historical landmark, nor is it only a future hope, but it is a place that we are invited to live in today.

“Authentic Christianity is an insightful and timely wake-up call to every Christian today. If you want to rediscover what the church is all about, this is a good place to start.” —Whitney T. Kuniholm, president, Scripture Union USA Authentic Christianity is more than a scholarly exposition of the first three chapters of the book of Revelation. The book takes you on a tour from the small island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea to the sites of seven ancient cities in what was known as Asia Minor. The messages Christ conveyed to the churches in those cities are as stunning today as they were then. The author relates those messages into direct confrontation and challenge as he builds a convincing case for the display of authentic Christianity. Authentic Christianity captures attention from the outset as it not only examines Christ’s critique of those churches at the end of the first century; it exposes today’s churches. In light of the church’s declining influence in the world, the author makes an exceptionally strong appeal for those who call themselves Christians to be authentic. Authentic Christianity exalts Christ’s role in the church and reflects the high standard expected of Christians today. In an age when the church is increasingly scorned, the author sounds a clarion call for repentance and revival. This is a compelling read. The book, containing personal and practical illustrations, is a dynamic challenge to bring one’s life into conformity with Christ’s expectations. The reader cannot possibly remain indifferent after reading the book and seriously considering its timely message. The book is an appeal for action, change, revival and authenticity.

City On A Hill written by Alex Krieger and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-29 with History categories.

A sweeping history of American cities and towns, and the utopian aspirations that shaped them, by one of America’s leading urban planners and scholars. The first European settlers saw America as a paradise regained. The continent seemed to offer a God-given opportunity to start again and build the perfect community. Those messianic days are gone. But as Alex Krieger argues in City on a Hill, any attempt at deep understanding of how the country has developed must recognize the persistent and dramatic consequences of utopian dreaming. Even as ideals have changed, idealism itself has for better and worse shaped our world of bricks and mortar, macadam, parks, and farmland. As he traces this uniquely American story from the Pilgrims to the “smart city,” Krieger delivers a striking new history of our built environment. The Puritans were the first utopians, seeking a New Jerusalem in the New England villages that still stand as models of small-town life. In the Age of Revolution, Thomas Jefferson dreamed of citizen farmers tending plots laid out across the continent in a grid of enlightened rationality. As industrialization brought urbanization, reformers answered emerging slums with a zealous crusade of grand civic architecture and designed the vast urban parks vital to so many cities today. The twentieth century brought cycles of suburban dreaming and urban renewal—one generation’s utopia forming the next one’s nightmare—and experiments as diverse as Walt Disney’s EPCOT, hippie communes, and Las Vegas. Krieger’s compelling and richly illustrated narrative reminds us, as we formulate new ideals today, that we chase our visions surrounded by the glories and failures of dreams gone by.
