The doctrine of the pactum salutis (covenant of redemption) offers the idea of a covenant between the very persons of the Trinity for the redemption of humanity. The doctrine received most of its attention in seventeenth-century Reformed theology, and has been criticized and almost totally forgotten in dogmatics since the eighteenth century. Most recent Reformed dogmatics tend to ignore the doctrine or disparage it from biblical, trinitarian, christological, pneumatological, and soteriological perspectives-namely, the doctrine lacks scriptural basis; it is tritheistic; it leads to subordination of the Son; it omits the role of the Holy Spirit; and it applies a deterministic idea for the Christian life. The theologies of Witsius, Owen, Dickson, Goodwin, and Cocceius portray a very robust form of the doctrine. Witsius argues with the help of a peculiar methodology of cross-referencing and collation of related scriptural texts that the doctrine is firmly based on biblical exegesis that was passed on from the patristic era. The doctrine formulated by Owen endorses the doctrines of inseparable operations and terminus operationis so as to give deep insight into the Trinity. In Dickson's doctrine, the Son's voluntary consent and obedience to the will of the Father are highly emphasized. Likewise, Goodwin's depiction of the Holy Spirit secures the divinity of the Spirit as well as his indispensable role for the transaction and accomplishment of the pactum. The doctrine in the theology of Cocceius sheds much light on the vibrant dynamic of the Christian life in accordance with the ordo salutis. The doctrine of the pactum salutis of the five Reformed theologians clearly shows that the doctrine is both promised and promising for theology and the life of faith.

Christians have always believed in the triune God, but they haven't always understood or used the doctrine of the Trinity consistently. In order to form a coherent view of trinitarian theology, it's important for Christians to have a working knowledge of the two legitimate models for explaining this doctrine: Classical – presenting a traditional view of the Trinity, represented by the Baptist theologian Stephen R. Holmes and the Roman Catholic theologian Paul D. Molnar. Relational – presenting the promise and potential hazards of a relational doctrine, represented by the evangelical theologian Thomas H. McCall and the Baptist philosopher Paul S. Fiddes. In this volume of the Counterpoints series, leading contributors establish their models and approaches to the doctrine of the Trinity (or, the relationship between the threeness and oneness of the divine life). Each expert highlights the strengths of his view in order to argue how it best reflects the orthodox perspective. In order to facilitate a genuine debate and to make sure that the key issues are revealed, each contributor addresses the same questions regarding their trinitarian methodology, doctrine, and its implications.

Some of the last words Messiah spoke to His disciples were of something He called the promise of the Father. He declared that they would receive power when the promise came upon them. He commanded them not to leave the city until they received it and He indicated that only then would they be his witnesses in Yerushalayim, Judea, Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth. What is the promise of the Father? Is it for today and is it for you? In this book, Jim Brown tells how he went from resentful skeptic to enthusiastic recipient of the promise of the Father. He then demonstrates how his experience lines up with Scripture. You will want to have your Bible open as you read this book so that your decision as to whether the promise of the Father is for you is based on Scripture, and not influenced by the opinions or doctrines of men. You may need to put aside things you have been taught and set your heart on discovering what Scripture says about the promise of the Father. You also may need to put aside any bad experiences you may have had with Charismatics or Pentecostals. If the promise of the Father is meant for you, then you need to receive it. This book addresses how to do that and what you should expect to happen when you do. Jim Brown is a retired law enforcement officer and recipient of the Attorney General's Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement. He attends the Lighthouse, an independent, non-denominational church and has a ministry of teaching about the Jewish roots of Christianity and the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Join Jim as he investigates what Scripture says about the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

What can the early church contribute to theology today? Donald Fairbairn takes us back to the biblical roots and central convictions of the early church, showing us what we have tended to overlook, especially in our understanding of God as Trinity, the person of Christ and the nature of our salvation as sharing in the Son's relationship to the Father.
