Since childhood, Lila has been closer to her twin brother Billy than anyone in the world. They even took a vacation together when Lila and her husband Patrick got tenure. To Patrick, his wife's relationship with her twin has always been something of a mystery. He knows Lila and Billy's parents died when they were teenagers, but he doesn't understand why Lila never talks about her parents. He also doesn't understand why books have always been so crucially important to the twins. A math teacher, Patrick is particularly mystified by Lila's obsession with stories. Then one afternoon, Billy points a rifle out the window of a hotel across from an elementary school. Billy is shot, "suicide by police," Lila is told. Billy's death devastates her, but it his reason for wanting to die that both stuns and horrifies her: he'd been charged with child abuse, of endangering the life of his middle child and namesake, eight-year-old William. In the aftermath of her twin's death, Lila falls apart. Soon her job, her marriage, her carefully constructed past-and even her sanity-are put at risk, as she tries to make sense of her life with Billy and the long-buried secrets of their childhood. While Patrick attempts unsuccessfully to save his wife, Lila's slowly comes face to face with who her brother really was-only to realise that there may be another person in danger now. Billy's favourite child, her nephew William, may be about to re-enact the same story Billy taught her to believe in so many years ago: a story of betrayal and lost innocence that must be redeemed by a violent act that could destroy them all.

Ian Buruma's maternal grandparents, Bernard and Winifred (Bun & Win), wrote to each other regularly throughout their life together. The first letters were written in 1915, when Bun was still at school at Uppingham and Win was taking music lessons in Hampstead. They were married for more than sixty years, but the heart of their remarkable story lies within the span of the two world wars. After a brief separation, when Bernard served as a stretcher bearer on the Western Front during the Great War, the couple exchanged letters whenever they were apart. Most of them were written during the Second World War and their correspondence is filled with vivid accounts of wartime activity at home and abroad. Bernard was stationed in India as an army doctor, while Win struggled through wartime privation and the Blitz to hold her family together, including their eldest son, the later film director John Schlesinger ( Midnight Cowboy, Sunday Bloody Sunday), and twelve Jewish children they had arranged to be rescued from Nazi Germany. Their letters are a priceless record of an assimilated Jewish family living in England throughout the upheavals of the twentieth century and a moving portrait of a loving couple separated by war. By using their own words, Ian Buruma has created a spellbinding homage to the sustaining power of a family's love and devotion through very dark days

The Promised Land written by Erich Maria Remarque and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-12 with Fiction categories.

The final, previously unpublished novel by the author of All Quiet on the Western Front - a dreamlike, powerfully moving account of an emigrant's experience of New York during World War II. From the detention centre on Ellis Island, Ludwig Somner looks across a small stretch of water to the glittering towers of New York, which whisper seductively of freedom after so many years of wandering through a perlious, suffering Europe. Remarque's final novel, left unfinished at his death, tells of the precarious life of the refugee – life lived in hotel lobbies, on false passports, the strange, ill-assorted refugee community held together by an unspeakable past. For Somner, each new luxury - ice cream served in drugstores, bright shop windows, art, a new suit, a new romance - has a bittersweet edge. Memories of war and inhumanity continue to resurface even in this peaceful promised land.

The book describes, too, the city's response to this great influx of immigrants--a response that marked the beginning of a new concept of social responsibility.

Vengeance will rain down on those who do the bidding of the evil one. The land that God created has lost its purity and splendor due to the plague of filth and corruption brought by man. God is deeply hurt and disappointed by what Satan has done to Gods most precious creations and by these creations choice to embrace evil and turn their backs against the Lord. To stop evil from shrouding the world in its gloomy veil, God summons his warrior named Zorra. Armed with his faith and the power given to him by God, Zorra enters the world of mortals to destroy the evil that threatens to bring mankind apart. Zorras entry to the world leads him to Hampshire, England. He immediately notices the suffering of the Jews and the cruelty of the rich and powerful with King Richard, the ruler of England, as the worst of them all. Zorra knows King Richards demise is the key to restore peace in the kingdom. But God does not want King Richard to die; the former still wants to give the latter a chance to repent and change his ways. King Richard might resist, but Zorra is determined to end the kings cruelty to the Jews and save Gods chosen people from the rulers cruel hands. To do this, Zorra must return the Jews to Jerusalem, The Promised Land.

Cassie Forrest isn't surprised to learn that the day she's decided to get her life together is also the day the world ends. After all, she's been on a self-imposed losing streak since her survivalist parents died: she's stopped painting, broken off her engagement to Adrian and dated a real jerk. Rectifying her mistakes has to wait, however, because Cassie and her friends have just enough time to escape Brooklyn for her parents' cabin before Bornavirus LX turns them into zombies, too. This is difficult enough, but Cassie's tag along ex-boyfriend and her friend's bratty sister have a knack for making everything, even the apocalypse, more unpleasant. When the two attract a threat as deadly as the undead to their safe haven, Cassie's forced to see how far she'll go to protect those she loves. And it's a lot farther than she'd anticipated. This, coupled with Adrian's distant voice on Safe Zone Radio and, of course, the living dead, threaten to put Cassie right back into the funk she just dragged herself out of. Survival's great and all, especially when you have leather armor, good friends and home-brewed beer, but there's something Cassie must do besides survive: tell Adrian she still loves him. And to do that, Cassie has to find faith that she's stronger than she thinks, she's still a crack shot and true love never dies.
