Prosthesis is an experiment in critical writing that both analyzes and performs certain questions about the body as an "artificial" construction. The book deals with the mechanical (e.g., a mechanical prosthesis like a father's artificial leg) in that most humanistic of discourses, the artistic - in order to demonstrate to what extent a supposedly natural creation relies on artificial devices of various kinds. It is distinguished from a thematics of the prosthetic in literature by its complex articulation with accounts of the amputee father's discomfort, slipping back and forth between an apparently constative and a more obviously performative mode, in and out of fiction and autobiography. Cutting across the terrains occupied traditionally by the history of medicine, film studies, art history, philosophy, psychoanalysis, literary theory, and fiction, it finds an artistic or cultural pretext for each of its expositions - a line from Virgil, a painting by Conder, a theory by Freud, a film by Greenaway, a text by Derrida, novels by Roussel or Gibson, a sixteenth-century rhetoric - that connects thematically or theoretically with the question of prosthesis.

"This proposal is a collection of Architecture's multiple forms of environmental agency. Sidestepping the pursuit of an ideal response to environmental problems, a comparison of multiple approaches is brought together in one building. Within a spectrum of prioritization from the performative to the aesthetic, four different forms of environmental agency are represented: the Prosthetic, the Machine, the Index, and the Aesthetic." -- https://commencement.gsd.harvard.edu/thesis2020/portfolio/william-f-smith/ (viewed October 8, 2020)

Perception written by Marco Antonio Bottino and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Dental implants categories.

Perception is a highly illustrated work which focuses on metal-free, pure ceramic restorations of both natural and implant-supported teeth. Metal-free or pure ceramic prostheses already form part of the dentist’s daily routine. As with any dental material, there are advantages and disadvantages to ceramics, and these are fully discussed in the book. The author focuses not only on technical procedures available, but also on scientific advances reported in the literature. The book deals with topics related to the preparation of teeth for various types of prosthetic requirements, adhesive cementation and different aspects of bonding. Importantly, it covers aesthetics within the framework of an integrated treatment programme. Patients are increasingly concerned about, and interested in, the aesthetics of dental treatment. They want perfectly-aligned white teeth; frequently they demand that their prostheses are better than their original teeth. To meet these aesthetic demands, they need to be made aware of the various treatment options for their prostheses. With over 1700 full-colour clinical photographs, Perception provides abundant illustrative material which the dentist can use as a basis for treatment discussions with the patient. Perception equips the dentist with the skills to produce all-ceramic prostheses which will leave their patients satisfied with the aesthetic appearance of their teeth. It provides dentists with all the information they need to explore this innovative and exciting field.

Artificial Parts Practical Lives written by Katherine Ott and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-04-01 with Medical categories.

From the wooden teeth of George Washington to the Bly prosthesis, popular in the 1860s and boasting easy uniform motions of the limb, to today's lifelike approximations, prosthetic devices reveal the extent to which the evolution and design of technologies of the body are intertwined with both the practical and subjective needs of human beings. The peculiar history of prosthetic devices sheds light on the relationship between technological change and the civilizing process of modernity, and analyzes the concrete materials of prosthetics which carry with them ideologies of body, ideals, body politics, and culture. Simultaneously critiquing, historicizing, and theorizing prosthetics, Artificial Parts, Practical Lives lays out a balanced and complex picture of its subject, neither vilifying nor celebrating the merger of flesh and machine.

Visual Prosthetic Design For The Improvement Of User Acceptance written by Stefania Sansoni and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with categories.

The field of prosthetic design is currently mainly focussed on the development of the pragmatic aspects of the prostheses. Academic research of the visual aspect of prosthetic devices is narrow, while being almost absent for below-limb devices. To respond this research gap, the research reported in this thesis focuses on the visual form design of below-knee prosthetic devices (VPD).Visual qualities of prostheses are viewed as a factor connected to the emotional impact in prosthetic users, and a revised concept of prosthetic devices is presented by proposing that prostheses are conceived of as visually attractive products rather than just medical products. This work aims to promote a change in the understanding of visual prosthetic design by providing a holistic overview of aesthetics and emotional design in relation to the visual qualities of prosthetics, as well as a framework for their use in practical applications. Specifically, robotic form for devices is proposed for the promotion of a new and fresh perception of amputation and prosthetics. The research presented in this thesis focuses on the visual form of below-knee prosthetic devices and aims to investigate the prosthetic form. Multiple aspects and fields are involved to offer a wide perspective of the subject: the work starts from a proposed revision of the concept of the subject to the delineation of a new process that incorporates the optimisation of aesthetic qualities of prosthetics for use in prosthetic centres. The primary research contribution is found in the design of a methodology for data collection (adapted version of the RGT) to detect the emotional latent needs of prosthetic users. Secondarily minor research contributions resulting from the exploration of other topics on VPD are also analysed in detail. The main goal of this research is to raise awareness and provide the due recognition to a topic that has been undervalued for long time. VPD is a field with a great potential for both academic and professional investigation and the hope for this work is to promote a change in the approach of prosthetic manufacturing, from specialists in both medical and prosthetic field, to include VPD in the design system.

and sometimes even surpass, the capabilities and aesthetics of the natural human body. A prosthesis is carefully designed to provide optimal functionality to assist the amputee in returning back to her normal daily activities as much and as independently as is possible. However, when an amputee wears her prosthesis, the prosthesis also becomes a part of her body image and feminine identity. She requires a prosthesis that aligns aesthetically with her body image just as much as she requires comfort and functionality. In designing for a female amputee, the focus needs to shift from a purely functional or aesthetic perspective to one that sees the whole woman that is the female amputee and works to design her the right tools that will help her reach her goals. The current prosthesis design process does not account for the importance of latent needs related to the feminine identity of female amputees. These unaddressed needs can contribute to issues of poor body image and lower levels of life satisfaction with prosthetic devices. Embracing latent, aesthetic needs early in the prosthesis design process can help lead prosthetists to more informed design decisions and increased prosthesis user satisfaction. In this thesis, use case diagrams are developed to define the scope of a female's interactions with the items in her feminine wardrobe, as clothes are a crucial part of expressing one's feminine identity. The diagrams allow the identification of areas of identity that will be most affected as a result of a particular amputation. Using the three use case diagrams in this thesis as inspiration, prosthetists can work with amputees to develop requirements that address both explicit and latent needs, and design prostheses that are more appropriate for the female gender.
