We have seen remarkable changes and popular protest has played a critical role in making ours a better and more democratic world. This book chooses a few key protests to show what we can accomplish if we try.

By 1963, Robert Menzies had been prime minister for thirteen years, Australia had its first troops in Vietnam, and change was in the air. There would soon be street protests over women's rights, Aboriginal land rights and the Vietnam War and unprecedented student activism. With the Cold War lingering, ASIO was concerned that protests were being orchestrated to foment revolution. The Protest Years tells the inside story of Australia's domestic intelligence organisation from the last of the Menzies years to the dismissal of the Whitlam government. With unrestricted access to ASIO's internal filesand extensive interviews with insiders, for the first time the circumstances surrounding the alleged role of ASIO in the demise of the Whitlam government are revealed and the question of the CIA's involvement in Australia is explored. The extraordinary background to the raid on ASIO headquarters in Melbourne by Attorney-General Lionel Murphy and Australia's efforts at countering Soviet bloc espionage, as well as the sensitive intelligence activities in South Vietnam, are exposed. This is a ground-breaking political and social history of some of Australia's most turbulent years as seen through the secret prism of ASIO. The Protest Years is the second of three volumes of The Official History of ASIO.

This is an open access book. The start of the 21st century has seen the world shaken by protests, from the Arab Spring to the Yellow Vests, from the Occupy movement to the social uprisings in Latin America. There are periods in history when large numbers of people have rebelled against the way things are, demanding change, such as in 1848, 1917, and 1968. Today we are living in another time of outrage and discontent, a time that has already produced some of the largest protests in world history. This book analyzes almost three thousand protests that occurred between 2006 and 2020 in 101 countries covering over 93 per cent of the world population. The study focuses on the major demands driving world protests, such as those for real democracy, jobs, public services, social protection, civil rights, global justice, and those against austerity and corruption. It also analyzes who was demonstrating in each protest; what protest methods they used; who the protestors opposed; what was achieved; whether protests were repressed; and trends such as inequality and the rise of women’s and radical right protests. The book concludes that the demands of protestors in most of the protests surveyed are in full accordance with human rights and internationally agreed-upon UN development goals. The book calls for policy-makers to listen and act on these demands.

Mass Uprisings In The Ussr written by V. A. Kozlov and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-01 with History categories.

Until recent times, incidents of mass unrest in the USSR were shrouded in official secrecy. Now this pioneering work by historian Vladimir A. Kozlov has opened up these hidden chapters of Soviet history. It details an astonishing variety of widespread mass protest in the post-Stalin period, including workers' strikes, urban riots, ethnic and religious confrontations, and soldiers' insurrections. Kozlov has drawn on exhaustive research in police, procuracy, KGB, and Party archives to recreate the violent major uprisings described in this volume. He traces the historical context and the sequence of events leading up to each mass protest, explores the demographic and psychological dynamics of the situation, and examines the actions and reactions of the authorities. This painstaking analysis reveals that many rebellions were not so much anti-communist as essentially conservative in nature, directed to the defense of local norms being disturbed by particular instances of injustice or by the rash of Krushchev-era reforms. This insight makes the book valuable not only for what it tells us about postwar Soviet history, but also for what it suggests about contemporary Russian society as well as popular protests in general.

“A book like this that sets out the law relevant to protest is essential for campaigners and activists. But it's not just a guide to legal rights when protesting, it's also a handbook for the defence of civil disobedience and non-violent direct action in our democracy. That makes it essential reading for us all.” Caroline Lucas MP, in her Foreword to the Second Edition The Protest Handbook, Second Edition is a clear and accessible guide to protest law, which brings together both the criminal and civil aspects of this area of law and explains complex legal issues in a user-friendly format. The authors guide practitioners and non-practitioners through the various issues and proceedings, covering the following: protestors' rights and police powers; criminal proceedings; common offences and defences; the law on occupations; challenging injunctions; and holding the police to account. The Second Edition covers all the core legislation and case law including: Public Order Act 1986; Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994; Human Rights Act 1998; Boddington v BTP, Rice v Connolly and R (Laporte) v Chief Constable of Gloucestershire as well as more recent developments such as: Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Police Act 2014; The Police (Conduct) Regulations 2020; James v DPP (2016); R (DPP) v Stratford MC (2017); DPP v Ziegler (2019); R v Roberts (2019); Catt v UK (2019); Canada Goose v Persons Unknown (2020); INEOS v Boyd (2020); R (Jones) v Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis (2020). This is an essential guide for all legal practitioners working in this area, as well as for organisations and groups who provide advice and support for protestors and, of course, for protestors themselves.
