Excerpt from The Protestant, Vol. 2 of 3: A Tale of the Reign of Queen Mary Since the late interview with Edward Wil ford, Sir Richard Southwell, to whom we must now return, had been much disturbed in mind. His fondness for his daughter, the dread he entertained lest the claim that Edward still made upon her, and her affection for him, should hereafter lead her to become the wife of a here, tic, allowed him no rest. And even in the midst of these tormenting reflections, he could not think upon Owen Wilford, the father of Ed ward, now suffering in prison, accused of heresy, and liable to the severest penalty of the law. This book is one of four substantial volumes designed to demonstrate the range of interests of the several Protestant Nonconformist traditions from the time of their Separatist harbingers to the end of the twentieth century. In this volume we are concerned with the eighteenth century. It was a period in which Old Dissent--the Congregationalists, Baptists, Presbyterians, and Quakers--had to face challenges from Enlightenment thought on the one hand and Evangelical Revival enthusiasm on the other. Largely in their own words, though with introductions contributed by the editors, we enter into the philosophical world of Isaac Watts, Richard Price, and others; we overhear doctrinal disputes over the doctrine of the Trinity; we meet such new arrivals on the religious scene as the Moravians, Sandemanians, Swedenborgians, and Methodists (Calvinistic and Arminian). We consider the Nonconformists' views on the Church, the ministry, and the sacraments; on Church, state, and society; and on Christian nurture, piety, and church life. From philosophical tomes to hymns, from sacramental questions to prison reform, from the most strait-laced Presbyterian to the most enthusiastic Jumper, this volume will remind scholars of the intellectual excitements, the practical witness, and the worship of the eighteenth-century Nonconformists.

Challenging accepted notions of Elizabethan foreign policy, Gehring argues that the Queen’s relationship with the Protestant Princes of the Holy Roman Empire was more of a success than has been previously thought. Based on extensive archival research, he contends that the enthusiastic and continual correspondence and diplomatic engagement between Elizabeth and these Protestant allies demonstrate a deeply held sympathy between the English Church and State and those of Germany and Denmark.

Excerpt from The Protestant, Vol. 2: Essays on the Principal Points of Controversy Between the Church of Rome and the Reformed I long ago maintained, that the head of the Catholic or universal church, must be infallible, otherwise there would be no security against defection; but Bishop Ha seems not to be quite certain whether the pope be infallible or not, though he seems rather inclined to believe that he is. He puts a question, and gives an answer thus Q. When the head of the church emits any decree concerning faith or morals, to which he requires submission from all the faithful, is he himself infalli ble in what he there teaches? A. This is not proposed as an article of divine faith, nor has the church made any decision concerning it. Great numbers of the most learned divines are of Opinion, that in such a case the head of the church is infallible in what he teaches; but there are others of a contrary opinion, who think that his decree is not to be considered as infallibly certain, till the body of the bishops receive it, either by their express approbation, or by their tacit submission to it, by which it becomes a decree of the whole church, whose infallibility is undoubted. Excerpt from The History of the Puritans, or Protestant Nonconformists, Vol. 2 of 3: From the Reformation in 1517, to the Revolution in 1688; Comprising an Account of Their Principles; Their Attempts for a Farther Reformation in the Church, Their Sufferings and the Lives and Characters of Their Most Considerable Divines WE are now entering upon the proceedings of the long parliament, which continued Sitting with some little intermission for above eighteen years, and occasioned such prodigious revolutions in church and state, as were the surprise and wonder of all Europe. The house of commons have been severely censured for the ill success of their endeavours to recover and secure the constitution Of their country; but the attempt was glorious, though a train Of un foreseen accidents rendered it fatal in the event. The members con sisted chiefly Of country gentlemen, who had no attachment to the court: for, as Whitelocke observes, Though the court laboured to bring in their friends, yet those who had most favour with them, had least in the country; and it was not a little strange to see what a spirit Of Opposition to the court-proceedings was in the hearts and actions Of the most of the people, SO that very few of that party had the favour Of being chosen members of this Mr. Echard insinuates some unfair methods Of election, which might be true on both Sides; but both he and lord Clarendon admit, that there were many great and worthy patriots in the house, and as eminent as any age had ever produced; men of gravity, of Wisdom, and of great and plentiful fortunes, who would have been satisfied with some few amendments in church and state. There is no single Protestant spirituality but rather Protestant spiritual traditions usually embedded in denominational families that share some basic Protestant principles. These two volumes of Protestant Spiritual Traditions offer essays on twelve traditions written by scholars within those traditions plus a concluding essay that gathers a number of Protestant contributions to Christian spirituality and Western culture under the category of “the body.” These thirteen essays discuss the contributions of significant spiritual figures from Martin Luther to Martin Luther King Jr. and offer insights on a range of topics from the theology of the cross to physical fitness.
