The Psalms have long been recognized as a rich resource for individual spiritual enrichment and for magnificent corporate liturgical expression in the life of the church. The Psalms Were Made For Lent provides a collection of six sermons that translate some of the deep themes inherent in the Psalms into meaningful language for the average person sitting in the congregation. The book includes: - Six sermons based on the Psalms - Liturgical responses with each sermon (Call to Worship, Call to Confession, Prayer of Confession, Declaration of Pardon) - Three hymns based on the Psalms, which can be sung to well-known hymn tunes Altogether this resource invites the congregation to experience the Psalms in a new and meaningful way. From the busy and demanding life of the parish minister, Bob McCreight has brought forth a valuable contribution for use in the church year, to lift the spirits of those at worship and, not so incidentally, to lighten the ever-present demand on local clergy for useful ways in which to celebrate the faith. I commend to all clergy his work on this part of our faith's teaching, learning, and celebrating ministry. John D. Burton, Interim Minister The First Presbyterian Church, Red Bank, New Jersey Robert C. McCreight has been active as a parish pastor for over two decades in a small, a middle-sized and a large congregation. Academic preparation at Muskingum College, Princeton Theological Seminary, and the University of Detroit with a second master's degree in marriage and family counseling has cultivated a curiosity and a capability of engaging with the Christian gospel and helping to bring it into the daily lives of the people he serves. In addition Rev. McCreight completed a year of hospital chaplaincy in a large hospital in Denver and for the past thirteen years has been active in hospital chaplaincy. From 1982 until 1995 he was the pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Toledo, Ohio. He and his wife Marianne have two daughters.

Lent is an ideal time to step back and reflect on the deeper movements of the spirit, and Elizabeth Caldwell helps readers do this through a simple but profound approach. Pause: Spending Lent with the Psalms invites us to take up the spiritual practice of encountering, sinking into, and deeply engaging with one psalm each week during Lent and Holy Week. The season of Lent encourages Christians to consider a different pace—one of slowing down, noticing, pausing—than what our dominant culture values. The invitation to pause with the Psalms begins on Ash Wednesday, starting with a mark of ashes on our foreheads that reminds us that in spite of our failures—things we have done or failed to do—we belong to God. Readers are then guided into an exploration of Psalm 51 and the theme of a clean heart. Each chapter helps readers to connect an image drawn from that psalm, such as paths, faces, blessing, tables, waiting, thanksgiving, listening, being alone or abandoned, and hands, with their own lives. At the close of each chapter, readers are invited to try a different prayer practice to help them continue to reflect on the theme and psalm each day. This intentional engagement—without feeling burdensome—opens just enough space and time for a creative spiritual practice to flourish, sustaining the life of faith during the Lenten season in ways that can make a difference in God’s world. Reflection and discussion questions are included with each chapter The book includes a leader's guide at the end for study groups. Within the Psalms, there is a collection of fifteen ancient songs, known as the "Songs of Ascent." Each Psalm offers advice to those who wish to grow spiritually and draw themselves closer to God, oftentimes posing challenges and difficult questions for the pilgrims on their way. The Pilgrim Road is a great metaphor for the spiritual life, a journey many others have travelled before us, offering their wisdom to those who are beginning their own spiritual adventure. William Carter offers his guidance, in the hope that your soul will be deepened with each encounter. Some lessons will be uncomfortable to read, while others offer assurance to that which you already know. Upon reading through The Pilgrim Road, Carter asks that the reader simply shares that which they have learned, encouraging Christians to never walk this spiritual path alone. As a pastor, lay person, beginner or veteran Christian, this resource will help to draw you and others closer to God, illustrating how best to let Him work through us.

A Translation by a Religious of C.S.M.V. 'Eight hundred years ago St. Bernard died. Lent with St. Bernard contains the gist of a Lent course he gave at Clairvaux. It is a devotional commentary on Psalm 91, the psalm especially associated with our Lord's temptations. St. Bernard does not give milk for babes. His addresses are strong meat. They are typical of the best in the patristic tradition. Written for Religious, they make, in this admirable translation, a very satisfying study for priest and people. Here is a Lenten discipline which will enrich the mind and gladden the heart. If the language is at first unfamiliar, the context is in the authentic tradition of Christian piety. Incidentally, the book provides a first-rate introduction to the Christian Church's use of the Psalter and to the Scriptural evidences of the mind of Christ.' Church Times [review]

A meaningful encounter with Jesus and the Psalms through the season of Lent with Barb Roose. Barb Roose guides the reader through a meaningful encounter with the Psalms through the season of Lent. Combining an interpretation of the psalms with real life stories, the study moves through the familiar words of Psalm 23 toward the painful cries of Psalm 22 uttered by Jesus on the cross. The study includes reflections on the life of King David and the original context of the writings, along with connections between the psalms and the life and death of Jesus the Messiah. "The Psalms provide a perfect framework for experiencing Lent through the verses that were Jesus's own scriptures, offering both him and us strength and wisdom in a painful and redemptive season. The Book of Psalms hums with the heartbeat of our humanity with divinely inspired words that find purchase in the tenderest places in our hearts when our human words or wisdom fails us." Barb Roose These six video sessions feature Barb guiding participants through the content.
