Psychosomatics have classically been of peripheral importance within our wellknown theoretical models, despite the fact that they do have a history in the field of psychoanalysis. This might be owing to the fact that Freud did not explicitly approach psychosomatics and, in consequence, did not put forward any hypotheses within his theoretical body. However, the Freudian concepts of actual neuroses and mixed neuroses are a basis in order to understand psychosomatic phenomena. The same could be said about the connections established with subsequent Freudian theoretical models, such as: the introduction of narcissism, unresolved mourning processes, early trauma and the action of Thanatos.

The Psychosomatic Paradox written by Claude Smadja and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Medical categories.

The author of this book explores a particular mode of mental functioning expressed through a series of clinical symptoms and highlighted by contemporary psychosomatic research. Smadja's concept, a true clinical and conceptual invention in the field of psychopathology, has evolved from work originally carried out by Pierre Marty, Michel de M'Uzan, Christian David and Michel Fain, pioneers of the psychoanalytic approach to subjects with somatic illnesses. These authors, internationally known as the "psychosomaticists of the Ecole de Paris", have contributed extensively to our understanding of the relations between the life of the psyche and the working of somatic disease. Using his own clinical experiences as a psychoanalyst and psychosomaticist, the author significantly extends the study of "operational states" and their metapsychological implications.

In this book body experience is seen as the subjective expression of psyche and soma and is discussed in relation to its significance in modern medical practice and psychoanalysis. The authors relate how the patient's subjective expression of his or her body frequently plays only a marginal role in current therapy and how the central factor of many diseases is consequently missed. Particularly in the growing field of psychoanalytic psychosomatic medicine it will be necessary to pay the issue of body experience more attention. These theoretical and empirical contributions on body experience were specially prepared for the volume. Initial chapters cover a variety of aspects of body experience and its general significance in medicine and psychoanalysis. Following chapters consider body-oriented forms of therapy, sex-related aspects of body experience and the empirical measurement of body experience and bodily complaints.

Skin in Psychoanalysis is an important theoretical contribution, revising several authors starting with Freud in whose writing we can now discover multiple direct or indirect references to the skin. It adopts a decidedly complex point of view regarding the skin here: the skin as source, the skin as object, the skin as protection and as a way of entrance, as contact and as contagion, the skin 'for two' within the relationship with the mother, the skin as envelope and as support, as a shell presented as 'second skin', as demarcation of individuality, as a place of inscription of non-verbal memories, toxic envelops and so on. Also, being the result of more than fifteen years of work with dermatologists and patients with skin diseases, psoriasis in particular, the book can be seen as a serious proposal for interdisciplinary work between dermatologists and psychoanalysts.'The hospital is a place where both tragedies and miracles occur, where many people go to heal but many others go in search for punishment.
