Many teachers who work in urban schools find classroom management to be very problematic. Their university course work, and training, didn't prepare them for the heavy demands of being an urban school teacher. Urban educators need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage adverse behaviors, and still deliver a quality education to all students. Classroom Management: A Guide for Urban School Teachers is designed to give educators practical strategies that will help them deal with the unique challenges faced by urban school teachers today. Whether the teacher is a novice teaching professional, or an experienced veteran; he/she will be able to learn how to establish and maintain control over the classroom environment, effectively deal with the most extreme student misbehaviors, establish rapport with students and parents, and reduce the amount of students sent to the principal's office on referrals. After reading this book, teachers will be able to combat the negative forces that adversely affect the classroom setting, and be able to concentrate on teaching and learning.

This practical book examines models of classroom management by discipline, system, and instruction. Written in an easy-to-read, clearly understandable style, it reviews the latest research on classroom management, addresses the current INTASC standards (nationally-recognized benchmarks for effective teaching), and offers readers a solid foundation for selecting one of the models presented to suit their own style and need. Case studies and scenarios place the reader into real classrooms with real learners, giving them a "snapshot" of these models in action. Coverage includes: classroom management as discipline (behavioral approaches, assertive discipline, positive discipline, and cooperative discipline); classroom management as system (reality therapy and choice therapy, discipline with dignity, building community, and classroom organization); classroom management as instruction (inner discipline, skillstreaming, conflict resolution and peer mediation, and judicious discipline); and developing a personal system (classroom management in a diverse society, and creating a personal system). An excellent resource for teachers of children of all ages and from all backgrounds; its comprehensive glossary and its coverage of INTASC standards makes this an invaluable reference tool.

Although hundreds of school improvement programs have been launched in the United States over the past quarter century, very few of them have been successful. The author of Quality in Education: An Implementation Handbook, an experienced quality expert who specializes in education, believes that many of these programs could have succeeded had their developers understood and applied the theories and methods of Total Quality Management (TQM). This book explains how to avoid the pitfalls that doomed previous efforts to failure, and apply TQM to build a strong foundation for success. Beginning with the basic concepts and tools, this book is your complete guide as you embark on your quality journey. The handbook explains the importance of making a commitment to change and establishing a shared vision of quality, and discusses tools and techniques for overcoming resistance and developing a quality culture. The book covers new methods you can use to manage change, and includes exercises to help you apply the ideas in your organization. Examples from successful schools demonstrate how Total Quality Management can be applied to every area of education, from classroom management to building maintenance. Quality in Education: An Implementation Handbook teaches you how to make fundamental changes to the way people in your district or school view education and themselves as educators. Using the principles and methods in this book ,you can realize the tremendous benefits of quality - continuous improvement in every educational process.

Handbook Of Classroom Management written by Carolyn M. Evertson and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-31 with Education categories.

Classroom management is a topic of enduring concern for teachers, administrators, and the public. It consistently ranks as the first or second most serious educational problem in the eyes of the general public, and beginning teachers consistently rank it as their most pressing concern during their early teaching years. Management problems continue to be a major cause of teacher burnout and job dissatisfaction. Strangely, despite this enduring concern on the part of educators and the public, few researchers have chosen to focus on classroom management or to identify themselves with this critical field. The Handbook of Classroom Management has four primary goals: 1) to clarify the term classroom management; 2) to demonstrate to scholars and practitioners that there is a distinct body of knowledge that directly addresses teachers’ managerial tasks; 3) to bring together disparate lines of research and encourage conversations across different areas of inquiry; and 4) to promote a vigorous agenda for future research in this area. To this end, 47 chapters have been organized into 10 sections, each chapter written by a recognized expert in that area. Cutting across the sections and chapters are the following themes: *First, positive teacher-student relationships are seen as the very core of effective classroom management. *Second, classroom management is viewed as a social and moral curriculum. *Third, external reward and punishment strategies are not seen as optimal for promoting academic and social-emotional growth and self-regulated behavior. *Fourth, to create orderly, productive environments teachers must take into account student characteristics such as age, developmental level, race, ethnicity, cultural background, socioeconomic status, and ableness. Like other research handbooks, the Handbook of Classroom Management provides an indispensable reference volume for scholars, teacher educators, in-service practitioners, and the academic libraries serving these audiences. It is also appropriate for graduate courses wholly or partly devoted to the study of classroom management.

This user-friendly resource will help K–12 teachers become more effective classroom managers. Tracey Garrett provides a new perspective that has been well received by thousands of preservice, novice, and veteran teachers. Each chapter of the book concentrates on a key area (physical design, rules and routines, relationships, engaging instruction, and discipline) and focuses on the importance of that particular area in relation to a teacher’s overall classroom management plan. Examples of specific techniques and strategies are presented through three classroom teachers, each representing a different grade level. In addition, four students share their beliefs and experiences related to the different aspects of classroom management and provide unique insight into the lived experience of students in real classrooms in a variety of contexts, including urban and suburban schools. Effective Classroom Management is a concise guide designed to prevent problems that require active discipline before they arise. Book features include classroom examples, case studies, and study questions. There is also an app, Classroom Management Essentials, available from the iTunes store featuring videos of the author and other teachers discussing classroom management strategies and experiences addressed in the book. Tracey Garrett is a professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Rider University in New Jersey where she was recently awarded the university’s Distinguished Teaching Award. “In just over 100 pages, Tracey Garrett has captured the essence of classroom management. I am particularly impressed with her attention to the physical environment of the class, as well as the importance of human relationships in teaching. This book would be an excellent addition to any program in preservice or inservice teacher education.” —Anita Woolfolk Hoy, professor emerita, The Ohio State University “This practically minded book offers an important focus on prevention of classroom management problems. It is unique in its attention to student perspectives on why specific management strategies work and it offers examples of how teachers can use basic management principles across varied grade levels.” —Joan Walker, associate professor, School of Education, co-director, Pforzheimer Faculty Development Center, Pace University “In Effective Classroom Management, the author assembles key practices together with some often-forgotten management components in her messages to practitioners on developing relationships and on hearing student voice. Garrett understands that effective classroom management requires doing the work with people at the forefront of the process.” —Kay Brocato, associate professor, College of Education, Mississippi State University
