At the beginning of the last century, solutions to the Einstein equation indicated the existence of mysterious objects, later called black holes. The Schwarzschild metric describes the geometry of the space-time of a black hole with the presence of two singularities. One of them is called the event horizon, in the vicinity of which gravity is extreme, which leaves the question of the truth of the Schwarzschild geometry open. Direct and indirect observations, such as the study of quasi-normal modes, are likely to be the most valuable for studying the structure of a black hole. Quasi-normal modes are the response to the perturbation of the geometry of a black hole. The mathematical structure of such modes is quite nontrivial, and these are complex functions oscillating at a "frequency" that is a complex number. The real part is the oscillation frequency while the imaginary gives the rate at which oscillations are damped. A more mysterious object that may exist in the universe is a wormhole, geometrically outwardly imitating a black hole. This fact may cause some inaccuracy when observing an astrophysical object. Comparing the perturbation profiles of these objects allows us to see that the quasi-normal modes of a black hole obey the characteristic ringdown signal. At the same time, for a wormhole, it theoretically turns out that the quasi-normal modes are a series of echoes representing a periodically repeating signal.

The detection of gravitational waves has ushered in a new era in physics called black hole spectroscopy. Black holes are predicted by General Relativity to be simple objects of nature, describable completely by their mass, angular momentum, and electric charge, thus satisfying the no-hair theorem. When black holes coalesce, they emit a particular kind of gravitational radiation waveform which includes a phase of quasi-normal modes (QNMs) during the ringdown stage, which decay with time. If the no-hair theorem of Einstein's theory of gravity holds, these modes and their frequencies are completely specified by the mass, angular momentum, and charge of the final black hole. QNMs can be used to test the no-hair theorem. Further, since General Relativity and specific modified theories of gravity differ in their predictions of QNMs, observation of such gravitational waves can be used to test theories of gravitation. This thesis aims to introduce the concepts necessary to the reader to understand the emerging field of black hole spectroscopy by focusing on black holes and their QNMs. In this thesis linearized gravity in General Relativity, the QNMs of Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes, no hair-hair theorems, and alternative theories of gravitation are presented. A modified theory of gravity, Einstein-dilaton Gauss-Bonnet Gravity, motivated by string theoretic attempts to combine General Relativity and quantum mechanics for a theory of quantum gravity, is presented, and QNMs for the theory are presented and discussed.

Black holes are one of the most fascinating predictions of general relativity. They are the natural product of the complete gravitational collapse of matter and today we have a body of observational evidence supporting the existence of black holes in the Universe. However, general relativity predicts that at the center of black holes there are spacetime singularities, where predictability is lost and standard physics breaks down. In 1965 Penrose introduced the fundamental concept of a trapped surface, on the basis of which he proved a theorem which asserts that a spacetime containing such a surface must come to an end. The presence of a trapped surface implies, moreover, that there is a region of spacetime, the black hole, which is inaccessible to observation from infinity. Since that time a major challenge has been to find out how trapped surfaces actually form, by analyzing the dynamics of gravitational collapse. The present monograph achieves this aim by establishing the formation of trapped surfaces in pure general relativity through the focusing of gravitational waves. The theorems proved in this monograph constitute the first foray into the long-time dynamics of general relativity in the large, that is, when the initial data are no longer confined to a suitable neighborhood of trivial data. The main new method, the short pulse method, applies to general systems of Euler-Lagrange equations of hyperbolic type and provides the means to tackle problems which have hitherto seemed unapproachable. This monograph will be of interest to people working in general relativity, geometric analysis, and partial differential equations.
