Excerpt from The Question of Romanism: Historical Review of the System of Romanism From Its Organization to the Present For fourteen years I have made a deep and far-reaching study of Romanism in all its religious, ethical, social and political rela tions to the human family, and I have found its arrogant boast of being the oldest and only true church, as lacking in historical proof as its claim to Christianity. Excerpt from Romanism, the Danger Ahead: The Reason Why a Good Roman Catholic Cannot Be a Good Citizen of This Republic If ever the liberty of the American Republic is destroyed it will be the work of Roman Catholic priests. - Lafayette. Recently there was held in Rome a council of American bishops; previously a high official, Mon signior Capel, had shrewdly drawn out a pretty full newspaper expression of public sentiment in this country on the question between Romanism and the friends of our public school system, and without doubt had made his report thereof to the pope; then came the pope's bull against free schools, free masonry, free government, free society, free thought and free men - in short, against the spirit of the age - the fourteenth century's protest against the nineteenth - the cry of superstition against nat ure - the pope's bull against the comet. Excerpt from book: 11 a mighty structure upon them. The foundation ought to have nothing weak in it, which has to bear Buch a tremendous weight. The points are these: 1st. It must be shown that St. Peter had a preeminence over the other apostles: 2dly. It must be shown also, that he was bishop of Rome: 3dly. It will still remain to be shown, that he could bequeath his own authority to other persons. It is clear, that if St. Peter had no supremacy to bequeath?or if he was never bishop of Rome?or if he could not bequeath his supremacy, supposing him to have been bishop, and to have had a supremacy?in any of these three cases, (and they are perfectly distinct and unconnected), the Pope's claim is groundless. Well might the reigning Pope at the time of the Council of Trent interdict all discussion of the question of his supremacy in that council He was conscious of the weakness of his title, and would not allow even his own subjects to look into it. I. The first question to be examined is, whether St. Peter had a pre-eminence over the other apostles. To determine this, we must consult the Scriptural history. The Romanists appeal principally to our Lord'scelebrated speech to Peter: Thou art Peter, and upon this Rock I will build My Church. (Matt. xvi. 18). Under what circumstances was this spoken ? Jesus asked His disciples: Whom do men say that I the Son of Man, am / They told him. Then said He: But whom say ye tlutt I am ? Peter, always ready to be the spokesman, said: Thau art the Christ, the Son of the living God that is to say: Thou art not only the Son of man, but also the Son of God. No doubt, our Lord intended to draw forth this answer and express his commendation of it. Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona, for flesh and blood hath not reveale...

Romanticism And The Question Of The Stranger written by David Simpson and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

In our post-9/11 world, the figure of the stranger—the foreigner, the enemy, the unknown visitor—carries a particular urgency, and the force of language used to describe those who are “different” has become particularly strong. But arguments about the stranger are not unique to our time. In Romanticism and the Question of the Stranger, David Simpson locates the figure of the stranger and the rhetoric of strangeness in romanticism and places them in a tradition that extends from antiquity to today. Simpson shows that debates about strangers loomed large in the French Republic of the 1790s, resulting in heated discourse that weighed who was to be welcomed and who was to be proscribed as dangerous. Placing this debate in the context of classical, biblical, and other later writings, he identifies a persistent difficulty in controlling the play between the despised and the desired. He examines the stranger as found in the works of Coleridge, Austen, Scott, and Southey, as well as in depictions of the betrayals of hospitality in the literature of slavery and exploration—as in Mungo Park's Travels and Stedman's Narrative—and portrayals of strange women in de Staël, Rousseau, and Burney. Contributing to a rich strain of thinking about the stranger that includes interventions by Ricoeur and Derrida, Romanticism and the Question of the Stranger reveals the complex history of encounters with alien figures and our continued struggles with romantic concerns about the unknown.

Excerpt from What Is Modern Romanism?: A Consideration of Such Portions of Holy Scripture, as Have Alleged Bearings on the Claims of Modern Rome Of Rome, and we ask the questions, What is it? What are its principles IS it the same now that it always was, or has it undergone a change? The Church polity of Rome as the Roman theologians teach, may be described, in political language, as an abso lute, unlimited monarchy The Pope is an autocrat; he is the head, not as a chairman is head of a gathering of citizens, or a President is in charge of a bank, or a; Bishop exercises jurisdiction over a Diocese; but he is by divine appointment the head of the Church, he is christ's image on earth, he is in the place of christ as no one else is or can be, he is above all and controls all, and is controlled by none. DO what he may, he is beyond man's judgment, and when he speaks authoritatively or Officially, god the holy ghost prevents him from going wrong; he is ih fallible.
