Andrea Meloni was born in Year VI (1928) of the Fascist Era in Italy. In his memoir he tells stories about growing up in Mussolini’s Italy. In elementary school he delighted in being a little fascist, participating in military drills in his schoolyard and the streets of Rome. As a teenager he gradually became disillusioned with fascism as Mussolini led Italy into World War II on the side of Germany and eventually fell from power when the Allies began their invasion of Italy. He describes the first years of his life living in extreme poverty in the village of Acuto (Frosinone), his move to Rome at age five, the years under Mussolini followed by the terrors of the German occupation of Rome and the dangerous civil war between fascists and partisans, and finally the overwhelming post-war devastation.

This study is based on research which I conducted in the Netherlands in 1948 and 1949. In addition, I was able to rely on experiences and impressions of the 1944-1946 period, when I was stationed in the Low Countries as a United States Army Military Intelligence Officer. In my description of Dutch purge measures I have attempte~ to be as unbiased a judge as possible; whenever I was unable to arrive at a definite conclusion I con tented myself with describing the opposing points of view. I am quite aware that this attitude of "neutrality" may be criticized, not only by many ex-Resistance men who have become dis gusted with the alleged softness of the purge, but also by many others who appear equally dismayed about its severity. For purposes of comparison, readers who are familiar with action against collaborators in other countries - such as France, Italy, or the Balkans - may note that the Dutch purge was not dominated by considerations of party politics. All Dutchme- employers and workers, Protestants and Catholics, Conservatives and Socialists - had been united in their resistance against the enemy. Consequently, disagreements about purge measures did not follow class, religious, or party lines. The few Dutch Commu nists had never been able to dominate the Resistance; neither were they able to exploit the purge for their purposes. Thus, in Holland problems of collaboration and purge could be studied in their purest form, without consideration of other factors.

A biography of Vidkun Quisling, focusing on his role in the political life of Norway before and during World War II. The racism of his National Union Party was directed mainly against Jews, with systematic attacks in the party press. Despite the small number of Jews in Norway, Quisling maintained that they were a threat because of their Bolshevik connections and their possession of the world's wealth, stating that the Jews wanted to incorporate Norway into a Marxist world-state under their domination. He attacked a proposal to allow Jewish refugees to settle in Norway in the 1930s. Quisling conspired with the Nazis to occupy Norway and served as Minister President under their authority. Incarceration of Jews and confiscation of their property began in 1941, and deportations in the fall of 1942; most of those deported died in Auschwitz. At Quisling's trial for treason after the war, one of the counts of the indictment was that he contributed to the death of Jews by encouraging their deportation to Nazi extermination camps. He was executed in October 1945.
