Volume 1 of 6 volumes about the early years of the Royal Air Force Man has dreamed of flight from the moment he first beheld the freedom of the birds of the air. Having resolved the practical problems of becoming airborne, it was not long before applications were considered which led to the development of aviation for use in warfare. Manned observer balloons provided a 'birds-eye view' of the battlefield for gathering invaluable information for commanders on the ground. When powered flight became a reality during the early years of the 20th century, it was, once again, as 'scouts' that aircraft found their first role; spotting for the artillery and gathering detailed dispositions and movements of enemy troops. Aeroplanes first went to war in Libya in a small conflict between the Italians and the Ottoman Turks in 1911-12, but the great war in Europe that erupted in 1914 would see an enormous acceleration in air power. More varieties and models of aircraft were developed. They became fighters and bombers, and many nations developed their own specialised corps to meet the demands of this new dimension in the waging of war. This multi volume history tracks in detail the development of the RFC, RAF and Royal Naval Air Service throughout the First World War and is an essential addition to every library of aeronautical warfare--especially in the year of the centenary of the birth of the Royal Air Force. Contains images not present in earlier editions of this work. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

The First World War had an enormous impact on Ireland. Over 240,000 Irish men and women volunteered to serve with the Allied forces, suffering almost 40,000 casualties. The Irish contribution to the air war remains overlooked, not just in Ireland, but also by historians generally. Although just 6,000 Irish served with the Allied flying services at a cost of 500 casualties, their impact was out of all proportion to their numbers. The contribution of Irish aces of the RFC and RAF to the Allied cause was enormous, just over thirty of whom accounted for 400 enemy aircraft. Irishmen such as Mannock, McElroy and Hazell were among the highest-scoring pilots of the war. Some were revered by their men, others were controversial figures – reckless with their own lives and those under their command – but many of their stories remain untold. This book seeks to restore all those who were written out of Irish history, while also providing for their achievements to be considered in the overall context of the first air war. Illustrations: 24 black-and-white photographs

The first book in the seven volume official history of the RAF in the Great War. This opening volume - the only one written by Sir Walter Raleigh before his death - covers the early days of the RFC and RNAS and the first months of the war. This official history of the part played in the Great War by the Royal Air Force is based chiefly on the records of the Air Ministry, collected and preserved by the historical section, supplemented by the contributions of many military and naval officers and civilian experts, as well as accounts of eyewitnesses. In all there are six volumes of text and maps plus a supporting volume of appendices, published between 1922 and 1937. The author of this first volume, Sir Walter Raleigh, died after finishing it and the task was taken over by H.A Jones who completed it. Volume One describes the beginnings of the Air Force and the institution of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). It covers the early months of the war (Mons to Ypres 1914) and the activities of Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) in 1914. It concludes with an account of the expansion of the RFC and RNAS during the war - fighters, bombers and aircraft carriers among other developments - and discusses the interplay between the two. The index to this volume is incorporated in that of Volume 2.

The young R. F. C pilot's air war above the Western Front It seems incredible that just over 100 years ago no country counted an air-force among its armed services. Pilots were drawn from other branches of the military and the early airmen were not referred to as 'the cavalry of the air' for no reason. The First World War introduced aerial bombing of troops, transport, manufacturing installations and cities, aerial reconnaissance, air to air combat-the 'dog-fight'-and the potential for the destruction of shipping from the air. The third dimension of warfare had come of age. Flying was still a primitive business with flimsy aircraft of canvas and wood often powered by unreliable engines. The brave young men who sat at their controls often died before they could master their craft. Nevertheless, if there can be any romance in war the exploits of these early aviators embodied it and retain it to the present day. The author of this book has written an account of high adventure: a story of a war fought in the clouds and clear blue skies, high above the wire, mud and blood of the trenches of the Western Front. This is an exceptionally enjoyable book about the early days of the R. F. C. It covers every aspect of the Great War in the air from an allied fighting pilot's perspective and will delight anyone interested in the subject. The introduction is by General C. G Hoare of the Royal Air Force. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

War in the air over the Middle East Mesopotamia, 'the land of the two rivers', is deemed the birthplace of civilisation. Now modern day Iraq, it has known warfare throughout the millennia that man has inhabited it. By the first years of the twentieth century the Ottoman Turkish Empire had claimed Mesopotamia as their own and its alliance with Germany during the Great War brought battle to it once more. For the first time conflict came to its skies in the form of the newly formed air forces of the opposing armies. This book concerns the experiences of an officer of the R. F. C fighting a war far different from his comrades on the Western Front but one which was just as deadly. This is an usual account of early war in the air from one of the great conflicts sideshow theatres.

Winged Warfare written by William A. Bishop and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-03 with History categories.

An ace over the Western Front-in his own words The Canadian author of this book, William Bishop, volunteered for imperial service as a cavalryman as the Great War called its colonial men to the colours. A brief encounter with aircraft-the cavalry of the clouds-and a prolonged encounter with mud persuaded him that his war should instead be fought in the skies with the RFC. Bishop flew first as an observer and eventually, on winning his double wings, as the pilot of a 'scout'-the famous early fighter aircraft of the pioneering 'dogfight days' of aerial combat. Most of us know that the lives of pilots over the Western Front were perilously short, but Bishop had found his vocation and he began destroying enemy aircraft with a ruthless efficiency. His final total of 47 kills established him as a notable allied 'ace' and earned him a succession of decorations including the Victoria Cross. Remarkably, through a combination of skill and good luck, he survived his combat experiences to be the author of this excellent first-hand account, written while the war still raged, of the First World War in the air from a pilots perspective. Readers can be assured that this exciting book is everything one could hope for, with vital descriptions of duels with the 'Red Baron' and his Flying Circus together with many other riveting experiences. Available in paperback and hardcover with dustjacket.

Some years ago, Aidan Williams published two articles for Cross and Cockade, the Journal of the First World War Aviation Historical Society. The subject of both articles was the relatively little-known Engine Repair Shops of the Royal Flying Corps (later the Royal Air Force) in France during the Great War. Aidan has updated the information, added background stories, and included more photographs and extra details to introduce the history of the Engine Repair Shops to a whole new readership. In 1915, Scarborough-born Second Lieutenant Louis Frederick Rudston Fell joined the Engine Repair Shops as Assistant Equipment Officer; by 1919, he was Lieutenant Colonel L. F. R. Fell DSO OBE, and he continued to play an important role in British aero engine development up to the Second World War. In addition, Air Mechanic Thomas Boland's working day in the rotary engine section is described.
