The Race for Capital (And Other Out-of-the-Box Economic Arguments) is my third book and an aggregation of some of my most important economic and financial thoughts in recent times, as distilled from my weekly column and elsewhere. The books title derives from the biggest economic argument of the daythe problem of inequalitywhich has finally been noticed by important economists around the world but to which no solution has yet been found. In this book, that argument is further advanced, and an African perspective is added, because whenever important economic arguments such as this goes on, that most vulnerable continent does not feature in the analysis. But the perspective of this book is not all about complaining about the state of Africa and its position development-wise but also on solutions. Some germane solutions are hereby offered for African economies especially, but these are also for every other economy around the world that seeks to reposition its people and make a dent in the hard-to-solve quagmires facing the world today. There are no simple solutions, apparently.

As debate swirls around Harlem’s present and future, Race Capital? revisits a century of the area’s history, culture, and imagery, exploring how and why it achieved its distinctiveness and significance and offering new accounts of Harlem’s evolving symbolic power. In this book, leading scholars consider crucial aspects of Harlem’s social, political, and intellectual history; its artistic, cultural, and economic life; and its representation across an array of media and genres. Incorporations offers a new way of thinking about issues of race, bodies, and commodity culture. Moving beyond the study of identity and difference in media, Eva Cherniavsky asserts that race can be understood as a sign of the body's relation to capital. In Incorporations, Cherniavsky interrogates the interplay of nationalism, colonialism, and capitalism in the production of racial embodiment. Testing the links between race and capital, Incorporations examines how media culture transmutes white bodies into commodity-images in such films as Blonde Venus, A Touch of Evil, and Fargo, and in the television series The Simpsons and the fiction of Octavia Butler and Leslie Marmon Silko. Cherniavsky posits an innovative approach to whiteness studies that does not focus on the emancipatory possibilities of cross-racial identification. Working with the tools of critical race theory as well as postcolonial and cultural studies, Cherniavsky demonstrates how representations of racial embodiment have evolved, and suggests that “race” is the condition of exchangeable bodies under capital. Eva Cherniavsky is professor of American literature and culture at the University of Washington. The subprime crash of 2008 revealed a fragile, unjust, and unsustainable economy built on retail consumption, low-wage jobs, and fictitious capital. Economic crisis, finance capital, and global commodity chains transformed Southern California just as Latinxs and immigrants were turning California into a majority-nonwhite state. In Inland Shift, Juan D. De Lara uses the growth of Southern California’s logistics economy, which controls the movement of goods, to examine how modern capitalism was shaped by and helped to transform the region’s geographies of race and class. While logistics provided a roadmap for capital and the state to transform Southern California, it also created pockets of resistance among labor, community, and environmental groups who argued that commodity distribution exposed them to economic and environmental precarity.

Virgin Capital examines the cultural impact and historical significance of the Economic Development Commission (EDC) in the United States Virgin Islands. A tax holiday program, the EDC encourages financial services companies to relocate to these American-owned islands in exchange for an exemption from 90% of income taxes, and to stimulate the economy by hiring local workers and donating to local charitable causes. As a result of this program, the largest and poorest of these islands—St. Croix—has played host to primarily US financial firms and their white managers, leading to reinvigorated anxieties around the costs of racial capitalism and a feared return to the racial and gender order that ruled the islands during slavery. Drawing on fieldwork conducted during the boom years leading up to the 2008–2009 financial crisis, Virgin Capital provides ethnographic insight into the continuing relations of coloniality at work in the quintessentially "modern" industry of financial services and neoliberal "development" regimes, with their grounding in hierarchies of race, gender, class, and geopolitical positioning.

China and India are the world's most watched countries. The common knowledge is that India's financial system is ahead of China's in terms of sophistication, but not in terms of volumes. India's market depth is also considered more than that of China, though China is gradually catching up. China attracts almost ten times more FDI, when compared with India. China accounts for more than 4% of the world's financial assets, whereas India holds less than 1% and this difference cannot be fully explained by the two economies' size. The paper will present a comparative analysis of the capital markets of the two countries. The paper also discusses the development measures taken by both the countries for their capital markets and their assessment their off.
