This book describes in detail the construction and working principle of a variety of commercially available hysteresis machines. The last part of the book is devoted to a comprehensive study of an experimental hysteresis machine. The contents of this part derive entirely from the experimental and analytical work carried out by the author during his doctoral research at the University of Aston in the UK. The exhaustive range of tests and measurements, obtained by the use of uniquely devised transducers and techniques—many of these having been evolved for the first time—showcase numerous aspects of a hysteresis machine. These relate mainly to the measured waveforms of radial and peripheral flux density in the airgap and active part of the rotor as influenced by the hysteretic properties of the rotor material. Print edition not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan or Bhutan).

All hysteresis machines, are characterised by the use of a 'hard' or permanent-magnet material in the rotor of the machine in different forms whilst the stator may be similar to that of a 3-phase induction motor or comprise salient poles. The driving torque in the hysteresis machine is typically related to loss of power resulting from hysteresis in the active part of the rotor. A hysteresis motor which forms the mainstay of a variety of hysteresis machines is a synchronous motor, being self-starting with the developed torque remaining constant throughout. The present book, one of its kind covering the said subject matter, describes in detail the construction and working principle of a variety of commercially available hysteresis machines. The last part of the book is devoted to a comprehensive study of an experimental hysteresis machine. The contents of this part derive entirely from the experimental and analytical work carried out by the author during his doctoral research at the University of Aston in the UK. The exhaustive range of tests and measurements, obtained by the use of uniquely devised transducers and techniques, many of these having been evolved for the first time, showcase numerous aspects of a hysteresis machine, never before brought out anywhere. These relate mainly to the measured waveforms of radial and peripheral flux density in the airgap and active part of the rotor as influenced by the hysteretic properties of the rotor material.

Axial Flux Permanent Magnet (AFPM) brushless machines are modern electrical machines with a lot of advantageous merits over their conventional counterparts. They are increasingly used in power generation, domestic appliances, industrial drives, electric vehicles, and marine propulsion drives and many other applications. This book deals with the analysis, construction, design, optimisation, control and applications of AFPM machines. The authors present their own research results, as well as significant research contributions made by others. This monograph will be of interest to electrical engineers and other engineers involved in the design and application of AFPM brushless machine drives. It will be an important resource for researchers and graduate students in the field of electrical machine and drives.

The collaboration and research that was developed to produce the MIT Gas Turbine Engine are described in this book. Both the engine and generator are fabricated from silicon using a combination of bulk and surface microfabrication technologies. The book discusses the technical details that have gone into producing the engine and the overall systems-level tradeoffs, in particular its motor compressors and turbine generators, and the decisions that have been made.

Power Magnetic Devices Discover a cutting-edge discussion of the design process for power magnetic devices In the newly revised second edition of Power Magnetic Devices: A Multi-Objective Design Approach, accomplished engineer and author Dr. Scott D. Sudhoff delivers a thorough exploration of the design principles of power magnetic devices such as inductors, transformers, and rotating electric machinery using a systematic and consistent framework. The book includes new chapters on converter and inverter magnetic components (including three-phase and common-mode inductors) and elaborates on characteristics of power electronics that are required knowledge in magnetics. New chapters on parasitic capacitance and finite element analysis have also been incorporated into the new edition. The work further includes: A thorough introduction to evolutionary computing-based optimization and magnetic analysis techniques Discussions of force and torque production, electromagnet design, and rotating electric machine design Full chapters on high-frequency effects such as skin- and proximity-effect losses, core losses and their characterization, thermal analysis, and parasitic capacitance Treatments of dc-dc converter design, as well as three-phase and common-mode inductor design for inverters An extensive open-source MATLAB code base, PowerPoint slides, and a solutions manual Perfect for practicing power engineers and designers, Power Magnetic Devices will serve as an excellent textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in electromechanical and electromagnetic design.
