This important new collection is keyed to a fresh analysis of the ways in which meaning can be examined and the caution with which critics should proceed. Writing with his customary extraordinary clarity, Hume argues for a move beyond the kinds of interpretation prevalent for the last 30 years based upon close reading. With subtlety and fine sense, "Content and Meaning in the Drama," chapter one, outlines how to identify and analyze the "meaning" of plays in ways that go beyond questions of effective impact and enter the realm of ideas and commentary upon real-life material. In urging this move he cautions against lapsing into relativism or losing sight of the lessons to be learned from generic and historical context. His essays present a survey of the drama of this period (concentrating on comedy), focusing on matters of content, ideology and values, impact, and genre. He presents a case for the study of some fine but neglected plays, demolishes some misleading clichés, and offers a view of the plays unwarped by inherited assumptions or personal preferences. To an extent quite unusual in a collection, his first essay provides a purpose and point for the subsequent essays and their concern with the values to be found in the plays and the impact they seem designed to have on an audience. As Hume states in the Preface, "I have assembled this collection of essays in the belief that they represent a coherent approach to the plays, and in the hope that they will prove provocative. I will be content if my arguments serve to focus future debate, whether they are accepted, rejected, or modified by later writers."

The Pious Sex strives to enlighten the reader with respect to the relationship between women and religion. The notion that there is a special relationship between women and piety may call to mind the worst of the prejudices associated with women over the ages: the characterization of women as superstitious and inherently irrational creatures who must be kept firmly in hand by the patriarchal establishment. The suggestion that there is a special relationship between women and piety conjures up the most oppressive picture of womanly virtue. The contributors of this volume revisit the claim that women constitute the pious sex and investigate the implications of such a designation. This collection of original essays examines the relationship between women and religion in the history of political thought broadly conceived. This theme is a remarkably revealing lens through which to view the Western philosophical and poetical traditions that have culminated in secular and egalitarian modern society. The essays also give highly analytical accounts of the manifold and intricate relationships between religion, family, and public life in the history of political thought, and the various ways in which these relationships have manifested themselves in pagan, Jewish, Christian, and post-Christian settings.

Arguing for the importance of wit beyond its use as a literary device, Roger D. Lund outlines the process by which writers in Restoration and eighteenth-century England struggled to define an appropriate role for wit in the public sphere. He traces its unpredictable effects in works of philosophy, religious pamphlets, and legal writing and examines what happens when literary wit is deliberately used to undermine the judgment of individuals and to destabilize established institutions of church and state. Beginning with a discussion of wit's association with deception, Lund suggests that suspicion of wit and the imagination emerges in attacks on the Restoration stage, in the persecution of The Craftsman, and in criticism directed at Thomas Hobbes's Leviathan and works by writers like the Earl of Shaftesbury, Thomas Woolston, and Thomas Paine. Anxieties about wit, Lund shows, were in part responsible for attempts to suppress new communal venues such as coffee houses and clubs and for the Church's condemnation of the seditious pamphlets made possible by the lapse of the Licensing Act in 1695. Finally, the establishment's conviction that wit, ridicule, satire, and innuendo are subversive rhetorical forms is glaringly at play in attempts to use libel trials to translate the fear of wit as a metaphorical transgression of public decorum into an actual violation of the civil code.
