From its origins in the swamps of Southeast Asia to its role in the medieval Black Death to its unshakeable niche in modern urban centers, the rat has incredible evolutionary advantages. Combining biology with history, and social commentary with firsthand experience, Rat dispels the myths and exposes the little-known facts about the ubiquitous rodent. Plague carrier, city vermin, and an out-and-out menace to modern man, the rat, like death and taxes, is a certain fixture in humankind's history. Rats are found in virtually every nook and cranny of the globe and their numbers are ever increasing. Rats are always adapting and they seem to outwit any attempts by humans to wipe them out. What makes the rat such a worthy adversary and how has it risen to the top of the animal kingdom? • Rats have been discovered living in meat lockers. The rats in there simply grew longer hair, fatter bodies, and nested in the carcasses they fed upon. • A female rat can, under good conditions, have well over 100,000 babies in her lifetime. • A rat can fall fifty feet onto pavement and skitter away unharmed. • A rat's jaws can exert a force more than twenty times as powerful as a human's. • The front side of a rat's incisors are as hard as some grades of steel. In Rat: How the World's Most Notorious Rodent Clawed Its Way to the Top, Jerry Langton explores the history, myth, physiology, habits, and psyche of the rat and even speculates on the future of the rat and how they might evolve over the next few hundred years.

Rodents are a key mammalian group, and ar highly successful in many environments throughout the world. Indeed, they constitute more than 42% of the known mammalian species. In many instances, rodents provide major benefits to the environment as bio-engineers, but the conservation status of quite a number of species is listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources as 'at risk', 'threatened' or 'endangered'. However, some rodent species (less than 5%) are pests and cause significant losses to agricultural crops in many regions of the world. Rodents do not recognise international boundaries, different human cultures, or economic standards-they are major agricultural, urban and social pests across much of the developed and developing world. In Asia alone, the amount of grain eaten by rodents in rice fields each year would provide enough to feed 200 million Asians for a year, with rice providing 50-60% of their daily calorific intake. Many rodent species are also reservoirs of organisms that cause debilitating diseases in humans and livestock.

Pests In The City written by Dawn Day Biehler and has been published by University of Washington Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-01 with Nature categories.

From tenements to alleyways to latrines, twentieth-century American cities created spaces where pests flourished and people struggled for healthy living conditions. In Pests in the City, Dawn Day Biehler argues that the urban ecologies that supported pests were shaped not only by the physical features of cities but also by social inequalities, housing policies, and ideas about domestic space. Community activists and social reformers strived to control pests in cities such as Washington, DC, Chicago, Baltimore, New York, and Milwaukee, but such efforts fell short when authorities blamed families and neighborhood culture for infestations rather than attacking racial segregation or urban disinvestment. Pest-control campaigns tended to target public or private spaces, but pests and pesticides moved readily across the porous boundaries between homes and neighborhoods. This story of flies, bedbugs, cockroaches, and rats reveals that such creatures thrived on lax code enforcement and the marginalization of the poor, immigrants, and people of color. As Biehler shows, urban pests have remained a persistent problem at the intersection of public health, politics, and environmental justice, even amid promises of modernity and sustainability in American cities.
