"Mary Buchinger possesses native fluency in the language of velocities. In Navigating the Reach, the speaker touches her way, poem after spare poem, along a swift corridor of exits and disappearances. In this, her fourth full-length collection, Buchinger's nimble poems examine the transition of the staid to the seldom, and finally, the never. Her poems fly at an altitude of lonely compassion, from which she captures the gleaming urgencies far below, just as their gleam ceases. She observes the handing back and forth of treasured things between father and daughter, as the exchange process itself dwindles them, however tenderly. Ultimately, we stand alongside the speaker in a vast, clean emptiness, which is in fact brimming with the marvel of impermanence." - Frannie Lindsay, author of If Mercy (The Word Works) "How does one learn / to navigate the reach / its treacherous rocks?" asks Mary Buchinger in the title poem of her new collection. The "reach" she refers to is not just a stretch of ocean between islands off coastal Maine. This book is about the churning cross-currents of grief. Buchinger's poems recount difficult months before and after her father's death, and take us deep into the inescapable labors of sorrow, memory, and longing. Immersion in the "reach," however, also reaffirms and deepens the poet's connection to life, its beauty and energy, as well as its mortal shoals. With evocative, often stunning imagery and rhythms, these poems follow the poet as she makes her way toward, as she says in the book's final poem, "the place where the sun touches down." - Fred Marchant, author of Said Not Said (Graywolf Press)

Catch If You Can Your Country S Moment written by William S. Waddell and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-05-05 with Literary Criticism categories.

The eight essays in this collection explore the work of Adrienne Rich, one of America’s most significant living writers and a poet and a public intellectual with a substantial audience both inside and outside the academy. Taken together, the essays argue for a shift in the perceived center of gravity of Rich’s career, from the passionate and eloquent poems of a largely personal feminist awakening, from the mid 60s to the early 80s, to the equally (if differently) passionate and eloquent poems of a more broadly public re-imagination of our country and its history, beginning with her work of the mid 1980s. Rich has remained committed to the reconstruction of poetry’s place in public as well as private life, nationally and globally. From varied perspectives, accessible to the common reader as well as the specialist, the collection addresses Rich’s negotiation of the boundary between these public and private spheres and the potential of poetry as a revolutionary medium and alternate epistemology, a means, as the title expresses it, of recovery and regeneration. Rich has aimed always, as the last lines of her poem “Planetarium” (1968) have it, at “the relief of the body / and the reconstruction of the mind,” and this collection works to describe her effort to extend the reach of that healing motive across a continent and a culture. "In these eight keenly executed essays edited by William Waddell, we see Rich finally removing those “asbestos gloves” once used to handle sizzling political topics. Critics in this volume show Adrienne Rich struggling barehanded with changing poetic strategies, complex new subject positions and the relations of power and cultural practice in the constitution of history. Transformative cartographer of words and perceptions, Rich, as Waddell argues, outlines “a method for redefining American space,” remapping North American culture for the marginalized, the repressed and the resistant. Waddell’s collection celebrates the polyphony of politics and aesthetics in Rich’s work, shaping for the reader an ethical discourse intensively visible, for the first time, in volumes such as An Atlas of the Difficult World: Poems 1988-1991, but equally present throughout Rich’s prose and poetry." All Of Us written by Raymond Carver and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-28 with Literary Criticism categories.

Raymond Carver, who became a master-storyteller of his generation and was hailed in Europe as 'the American Chekhov', wrote of himself: "I began as a poet. My first publication was a poem. So I suppose on my tombstone I'd be very pleased if they put 'Poet and short-story writer - and occasional essayist', in that order." This complete edition allows readers to experience the range and overwhelming power of Carver's poetry for the first time. It brings together in the order of their American publication the poems of Fires (1985), Where Water Comes Together with Other Water (1986), Ultramarine (1988), A New Path to the Waterfall (1989) and No Heroics, Please (1991). For readers who know Carver's middle period only through his selected poems, In a Marine Light (1988), it includes the windfall of 51 poems not previously published in Britain. All of Us is edited by Professor William L. Stull of the University of Hartford, and introduced with an essay on Raymond Carver's methods of composition by his widow, the poet Tess Gallagher.

Beyond My Reach written by M. E. Sapphire and has been published by Trafford Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Literary Criticism categories.

An endeavor of love, is the only way to aptly depict the motivation and deep love flowing from her heart into this poetry compilation from the outside to the inside. Beyond My Reach is unique in that it was written from the free world to an incarcerated lover. With much love, more than 200 poems were written to express the intense love thriving within this lonely sweetheart during the last four years, the length of their heated romance from a distance. Ms. Sapphire's amorous declarations of devotion were the only inspiration needed to profess her passion and write the first poem, I Close My Eyes. She never imagined then, the poetry would someday amass into a quantity great enough to fill a book. Written solely to verbalize new emotions of love, each poem in this book was inspired by one young man confined behind tall concrete walls and razor wire of the penal system... ---------------------------------- BEYOND THE WALLS Each day you face a dismal existence Wondering what's beyond that prison wall So many youthful years you've wasted What made you err, you barely recall Double locked doors quarantine your life In triple layered concrete cages Tall dual fences, loops of razor wire Stand sentinel over inmates of all ages Incarceration has taken a deadly toll on you Never trusting, dreading each new dawn Privacy embezzled by constant vigilance Leaves you silent, fearful and withdrawn The world is soon forgotten behind the walls As you obey endless, ever-changing rules Constantly watching your back, danger lurks Fearing brawls, protecting your family jewels Being an inmate with untainted record Double locked doors will surely open for you Living on the outside can soon resume You've learned your lesson, freedom is overdue Your true love awaits you beyond those walls When you're thrust from that dismal womb Born again to embark on a new journey You'll emerge from your dungeon of doom. Picture Window written by John Hollander and has been published by Knopf this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-02 with Poetry categories.

In this deeply philosophical and highly inventive new collection, John Hollander, the distinguished author of numerous books of poetry, offers profound yet playful meditations on the reflective mind and on the words with which we come to know the world. In forms as varied as sonnets, songs, and ancient odes, he muses over the ways we use (and misuse) language as “we grasp the world by ear, by heart, by head / And keep it in a soft continuingness.” Here, too, are striking verses about the passage of time as recorded by the movement of light and shadow across a surface, whether it be the face of a clock or the enclosed walls of a Hopper painting. Throughout, Hollander delights us with mirrors, palindromes, and strange and surprising reversals that keep the mind ever alert with the challenge “to make words be themselves, taking time out / From all the daily work of meaning, to / Make picture puzzles of what they’re about.” Donna Seaman has written of John Hollander, “His wise and robustly complex poems span the mind like stone aqueducts or canyon-crossing railroad bridges—awesome works of knowledge and craft, art and devotion.” In this exciting new volume, Hollander shows once again the reach of his poetic imagination.

Standing at that magical place where sand meets sea, you likely have imagined putting a message in a bottle, consigning it to the waves, hoping it might some day reach another shore, and then not only be read but, incredibly across space and time, make a difference in other lives now connected to your own. It has happened to me, and I must sing of it. In the autumn of 1966 I let the waves carry off a poempassed around to students, family and friends, no need for even my name on it. Its message was simple: Keep heart, you are not alone; love, stronger than strong walls, will come, helping your heart in hiding grow wings, feeble perhaps at first, but wings! Word astoundingly began to come back in 1969, and has continued since, that Please Hear What Im Not Saying was indeed reaching other shores, across space and time was indeed making a difference in other lives. What follows attests to the power of words from the heart to touch other hearts, sometimes even to change other lives. Read on. You, too, will sing of it.
