Thermal Power Plants theme is a component of Encyclopedia of Energy Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty Encyclopedias. The Theme on Thermal Power Plants presents three main topics which are then expanded into multiple subtopics, each as a chapter. The first topic covers the basic theory including fossil fuel combustion, nuclear fission, thermal fluids and thermodynamic cycles. It then deals with those aspects important to the maintenance of high efficiency and good reliability such as exergy analysis, material characteristics and life extension. The second topic deals with the production of steam. Although this is only the heat receiving part of the steam cycle it is consistent with the general layout of the power plant where the fossil fuel fired boiler or nuclear fission reactor is a separate and distinct part with its own ancilliary equipment. Fossil boilers and nuclear reactors both produce steam but are so different that each is covered separately in its respective series of chapters. The third topic deals with the generation of power utilizing the steam produced in the boiler or reactor. Several chapters cover steam turbine design and operation. Since power must be produced to exactly match the demand, consideration is given to operational constraints and protective devices. Heat rejection in cooling towers is important where no large body of water exists and is addressed in one chapter. Gas turbines are used for peak power generation and, with steam turbines, for combined cycle plants so are dealt with in two chapters. Conversion of mechanical power from the turbine to electrical power for distribution to the consumer is an important aspect and is covered by the last chapter. These three volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers, NGOs and GOs.

Several emerging application areas are driving a revival in nuclear engineering, including new nuclear reactor designs (advanced water-cooled reactors, small modular reactors, and microreactors) and their various applications beyond electricity production and a revolution in nuclear medicine, nuclear space exploration, hydrogen production, and homeland security. This fully updated introductory textbook provides students and practitioners with the fundamentals of nuclear principles in engineering for a thorough understanding of physical processes relating to neutron physics, nuclear structures, and radiation interactions. To comprehend physical phenomena, hands-on computational exercises supported by mathematical details and real-life examples are provided to communicate the nuclear principles concepts. A new chapter details the evolution of nuclear power plants, explaining the modern-day technologies based on design details linked to the basic principles of nuclear engineering. In addition, every chapter is supplied with the problems solutions and answers. Nuclear Principles in Engineering, Third Edition, is written for students, engineers, physicists, and scientists who need up-to-date information on basic nuclear concepts and calculation methods, and will serve as an invaluable resource for training programs in the nuclear sector.

Fast Spectrum Reactors written by Alan E. Waltar and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-09-28 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book is a complete update of the classic 1981 FAST BREEDER REACTORS textbook authored by Alan E. Waltar and Albert B. Reynolds, which , along with the Russian translation, served as a major reference book for fast reactors systems. Major updates include transmutation physics (a key technology to substantially ameliorate issues associated with the storage of high-level nuclear waste ), advances in fuels and materials technology (including metal fuels and cladding materials capable of high-temperature and high burnup), and new approaches to reactor safety (including passive safety technology), New chapters on gas-cooled and lead-cooled fast spectrum reactors are also included. Key international experts contributing to the text include Chaim Braun, (Stanford University) Ronald Omberg, (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Massimo Salvatores (CEA, France), Baldev Raj, (Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research, India) , John Sackett (Argonne National Laboratory), Kevan Weaver, (TerraPower Corporation) ,James Seinicki(Argonne National Laboratory). Russell Stachowski (General Electric), Toshikazu Takeda (University of Fukui, Japan), and Yoshitaka Chikazawa (Japan Atomic Energy Agency).

Comprehensive Nuclear Materials written by and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-22 with Science categories.

Materials in a nuclear environment are exposed to extreme conditions of radiation, temperature and/or corrosion, and in many cases the combination of these makes the material behavior very different from conventional materials. This is evident for the four major technological challenges the nuclear technology domain is facing currently: (i) long-term operation of existing Generation II nuclear power plants, (ii) the design of the next generation reactors (Generation IV), (iii) the construction of the ITER fusion reactor in Cadarache (France), (iv) and the intermediate and final disposal of nuclear waste. In order to address these challenges, engineers and designers need to know the properties of a wide variety of materials under these conditions and to understand the underlying processes affecting changes in their behavior, in order to assess their performance and to determine the limits of operation. Comprehensive Nuclear Materials, Second Edition, Seven Volume Set provides broad ranging, validated summaries of all the major topics in the field of nuclear material research for fission as well as fusion reactor systems. Attention is given to the fundamental scientific aspects of nuclear materials: fuel and structural materials for fission reactors, waste materials, and materials for fusion reactors. The articles are written at a level that allows undergraduate students to understand the material, while providing active researchers with a ready reference resource of information. Most of the chapters from the first Edition have been revised and updated and a significant number of new topics are covered in completely new material. During the ten years between the two editions, the challenge for applications of nuclear materials has been significantly impacted by world events, public awareness, and technological innovation. Materials play a key role as enablers of new technologies, and we trust that this new edition of Comprehensive Nuclear Materials has captured the key recent developments. Critically reviews the major classes and functions of materials, supporting the selection, assessment, validation and engineering of materials in extreme nuclear environments Comprehensive resource for up-to-date and authoritative information which is not always available elsewhere, even in journals Provides an in-depth treatment of materials modeling and simulation, with a specific focus on nuclear issues Serves as an excellent entry point for students and researchers new to the field
