Excerpt from The Reader's Basis This book has been prepared for the use of advanced classes in the English course of secondary schools. It is the outcome of the class-room, and has been justified by experience. It presents the subject of literary composition from a point of view other than that taken by the usual text-book in English Composition, and it answers a purpose not yet met by other text-books. Experience has shown that the subject of literary composition, taught in successive grades during a period of two or three school years, is not grasped by the student with any sense of the unity of the whole, and that, therefore, near the end of the required course in English, a review should be given which will unify what the student has previously learned. Moreover, since it is the main purpose of the early part of the English course to stimulate and train a students power of expression, and to present the subject of literary composition from a writers or speakers point of view, so it should be the main purpose of the latter part of the course to train the students power to read, and to present the same subject from the readers point of view. Excerpt from The Heath Readers: First Reader The teacher of elementary reading needs as the basis for her work a series of interesting reading lessons, making use of a practical, well-graded, and properly limited vocabulary. Whatever method may be used for the development of the vocabulary and for the presentation of the elements of reading to the pupils, these materials are essential. It is the purpose of the heath readers to supply such lessons, leaving teachers free to use whatever methods their experience and surroundings make most desirable. The best preparation for the First Reader may be had through the use of the Primer in this series. It will be noted that the lessons in this book are in unusually large pro portion devoted to those subjects that are of most interest to children: animals and their ways, simple forms of nature that appeal to the eye and to the imagination, and stories of children and their pets. The pages have not been cumbered with exercises in word building. As every successful teacher will readily and at the appropriate time extend the vocabulary exercises into word-building exercises in such a way as will best serve the needs of her pupils. For the convenience of teachers, the vocabulary used in the lessons has been printed consecutively at the end of the book, where the words have been diacritically marked. The use of these marks may save some time for those teachers who wish to copy the vocabulary upon the blackboard, with marks to indicate the sounds of the letters. Classes that have successfully completed the reading of this book are prepared to begin the use of the Second Reader in this series. Excerpt from The Sprague Classic Readers, Vol. 2: Book Two Christ it was who disdained not the use of objects and symbols, remembering that it was the childhood of the race. He it was who spake in parables and stories, laying bare soul of man and heart of nature, and revealing each by divine analogy. He it was who took the little ones in His arms and blessed them; who set the child in the midst, saying, Except ye become as one of these. May the afterglow of that inspired teaching ever shine upon the path we are treading. May we bathe our tired spirits in its warmth and glory, and kindle our torches at the splendor of its light. Excerpt from The Elson Basic Readers: Primer The second aim in this revision was to incorporate new features demanded by experience and the results of recent experiments in reading. Four such features merit Special emphasis: (a) organization of the material to promote sequential habits of thinking; (b) simplicity in content, sentence structure, and vocabulary to insure rapid progress, confidence, and keen interest; (0) balanced variety to cause a steady growth in diversified reading interests; and (d) a practical method, based on the results of scientific studies, to build an early foundation for the various reading attitudes, habits, and skills that are essential in modern life. An additional distinctive feature of the Primer relates to the extreme care exercised in every stage of its construction. In addition to continuous and painstaking effort by the authors, the materials included were subjected to the constant criticism of experts in primary instruction. Furthermore, studies were continually in progress with respect to various problems which were subject to quantitative determination. These are listed in the manual which accompanies the Primer. Excerpt from The Language Readers Primer The child comes to school at the age of six or seven with a speaking vocabulary of several hundred words, say from five hundred to seven hundred words. This number will vary according to his environment and home influences. In teaching reading to these first year pupils, the aim should be to teach the child to recognize the symbols for the ideas which he already possesses. In other words, the aim is not to enlarge the child's speaking vocabulary but rather to convert it into a reading vocabulary. The child must learn to associate form and sound; the printed symbol must suggest an idea. Furthermore the child must learn to translate these symbols into oral language expressively rendered. If the class be one composed largely of children who speak little or no English, the problem is more complex. The teacher must build up an English vocabulary for the most commonplace actions and ideas, and, at the same time, must associate the spoken words which the pupils are learning day by day with the printed or written symbols. That is, the teacher must teach English speech as well as reading. In this Primer no particular method has been fol lowed absolutely. The aim has been to use the best features of the word, the look and say, the sen tence, the phonic, and the Gouin methods. Nouns, verbs, and adjectives in common use form the basis of the child's reading vocabulary. These should be taught as sight words. As an introduction to the work in reading, such commands as stand, face, etc., which are at first given orally by the teacher, may be written on the board and the children directed to obey them. The first sentences in this Primer direct the performance of certain actions, one purpose being to secure silent reading before oral reading is attempted.
