A revealing and surprising biography of the woman who defied Victorian expectations and gave the world Peter Rabbit. Beatrix Potter’s children’s books have enchanted generations of young readers who adored the characters she created as well as her distinctive illustrations. Born into a typically repressed Victorian family, Beatrix was expected to achieve little more than finding herself a rich husband, and thus her parents felt there was no point in bothering to educate her. But the Potters underestimated their daughter. Stifled by the lack of stimulation, she educated herself in art and science, and developed a great love of the natural world. The success of The Tale of Peter Rabbit proved her to be creative genius who could have become the toast of the London literary scene—but when her fiancé tragically died, Beatrix retreated to the Lake District where she reinvented herself as a successful farmer, a canny businesswoman, and an early environmental pioneer. Passionately campaigning to save the area from development, she helped establish the National Trust, and despite her great wealth Beatrix lived out her days in humble anonymity. From a journalist who has authored biographies of Roald Dahl and A.A. Milne, this is an in-depth look at the woman behind the beloved books.

The world famous artwork of Beatrix Potter needs little introduction — it is as beloved as the familiar children’s stories it illustrates. But few know of her work in the gardens and interiors of Hill Top, the farmhouse Potter purchased in 1905. The estate and surrounding scenery inspired many of Potter’s stories and illustrations, and this gorgeously illustrated book shows Potter’s homes and her magnificent gardens beside those drawings, revealing the real-life sources for Peter Rabbit and many other Potter classics. The book also includes letters and diary excerpts, further exploring the relationship between Potter’s home in the Lake District and her iconic artwork. Through she's universally known as the creator of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Beatrix Potter did so much more. This is the true story about how she helped save the English countryside! Growing up in London, Beatrix Potter felt the restraints of Victorian times. Girls didn't go to school and weren't expected to work. But she longed to do something important, something that truly mattered. As Beatrix spent her summers in the country and found inspiration in nature, it was through this passion that her creativity flourished. There, she crafted The Tale of Peter Rabbit. She would eventually move to the countryside full-time, but developers sought to change the land. To save it, Beatrix used the money from the success of her books and bought acres and acres of land and farms to prevent the development of the countryside that both she and Peter Rabbit so cherished. Because of her efforts, it's been preserved just as she left it. This beautiful picture book shines a light on Beatrix Potter's lesser-known history and her desire to do something for the greater good.

The Story of Miss Moppet is a tale about teasing, featuring a kitten and a mouse, that was written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter and is book 10 in the Tales of Peter Rabbit & Friends series and is intended as an introduction to reading for early readers. Miss Moppet, the story's eponymous main character, is a kitten teased by a mouse. While pursuing him she bumps her head on a cupboard. She then wraps a duster about her head, and sits before the fire "looking very ill". The curious mouse creeps closer, is captured, "and because the Mouse has teased Miss Moppet—Miss Moppet thinks she will tease the Mouse; which is not at all nice of Miss Moppet". She ties him up in the duster and tosses him about. However, the mouse makes his escape, and once safely out of reach, dances a jig atop the cupboard. Not wanting to expose children to the cruelty of the real world, Potter shies away from reality and has the kitten catch and wrap up the mouse, then play with it. Accordingly, the mouse escapes out of a hole in the duster thereby avoiding his demise. ============= TAGS: Miss Moppet, kitten, Rabbit, Beatrix Potter, children’s stories, childrens, lake district, Derwentwater, Hill Top Farm, England, bedtime stories, mischievous, animals, behaviour, tease, teasing, bully, message, bullying, mouse, fireside, wrap up, head, curious, capture, catch, dance, jig, escape, hole, duster, feign, illness, pretend, tie up, toss about, cruelty, demise, death, atop, cupboard,

The writer Beatrix Potter was an author and woman ahead of her time, leaving humanity a literary production that transcends any temporal sphere. The literary world developed by Beatrix Potter a century ago still reflects contemporary trends; her characters could perfectly be the result of the most modern visual and textual arsenal of modern times. From the pages of her books spring mischievous little rabbits; elderly, sprightly mice full of cunning, reminiscent of the grandmothers or great-grandmothers every reader has known; devious cats that provoke suspicion... The Tale of Peter Rabbit is her most well-known work. The simple story of a naughty little rabbit who, by disobeying his mother, gets into serious trouble but eventually reaches a happy ending filled with lessons learned. It is a charming little story, beautifully illustrated by the author herself.

An insightful biography of the pioneering conservationist, illustrator, prolific author, and creator of Peter Rabbit and other legendary tales. Beatrix Potter was born curious, with an imagination and a love of natural science and animals that would serve her well. When her self-published and self-illustrated first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, was picked up by an enterprising publisher, Beatrix’s modest “bunny book” would become a phenomenon. After more than a century, Beatrix Potter endures as one of the most cherished children’s book authors in literary history. But what were the sources of inspiration that gave birth to her beloved anthropomorphic characters and enduring cautionary tales? Through extensive research, personal letters, and photographs, this concise and intimate biography reveals Beatrix’s privileged yet restrictive Victorian childhood; her volatile relationship with her mother; a tragic love affair with her editor; her sometimes debilitating depression and illnesses; her life and career beyond Peter Rabbit; and her liberation as a passionate, driven, trailblazing, and simply original creative spirit.
