Excerpt from The Rearing of Queen Bees Bee keeping is primarily a breeding problem, for the honey surplus of a colony depends so much on the queen. In order to make more public some of the best methods of queen rearing, this bulletin is issued. Much of the labor of manipulation can be avoided by the use of the systems herein described. It is held by the best bee keepers that it is necessary to restock all colonies with new queens every year; but the practice is not as com mon as it should be. It is hoped that the simplicity of the methods hereafter described will serve as an inducement. To those bee keepers who have not adopted the plan to pursue it in the future. The rearing of queens has become a separate field, in that some men devote their entire apiaries to this purpose; and to these professional queen breeders must, to a large extent, be given the work of' the improvement of stock: but it is far from wise for the ordinary honey producer to neglect this side of the industry. Excerpt from The Bee-Keeper's Handy Book: Or Twenty-Two Years' Experience, in Queen-Rearing, Containing the Only Scientific and Practical Method of Rearing Queen Bees, and the Latest and Best Methods for the General Management of the Apiary It may not be out of place for me to give tho reasons that induced me to assume the position of author and give to the bee-keeping fraternity a work of this kind. 1 had been engaged in queen-rearing but a few years when I became convinced that the system then in vogue was faulty and that a much better method was needed and might be devised. With this object in view I at once instituted a series of experiments which, I am happy to say, have been crowned with success, even beyond my most sanguine expectations, and I am now able to present to my fellow bee-keepers a system which is both scientific and practical. After so many years of arduous toil and study in perfecting this method, I felt that it was no more than just that I be reasonably remunerated for my labors and for the knowledge that I had gleaned from my long experience in queen-rearing; consequently I decided to publish my method in book-form, trusting to the hearty response of the bee-keeping fraternity for remuneration. It is not a manual, giving in terse, sharp periods, the great est amount of accurate information in the briefest space. My style, I fear, is often like my bee - yard, which in looks is irregular, while it attempts something useful. I never could be pinned down to systematic work. I always did like to work at the bees near a gooseberry-bush, full of ripe, luscious fruit, or under a harvest apple-tree, where an occasional rest could be enjoyed, eating the apples which lay so temptingly about. Do we not all need an occasional relaxation from the severer duties of life If so, the rear ing of Queens for our own apiary, gives us a change from the all-important struggle for honey, whereby we can get money.
