We know too much to believe, too much of science and suffering, genes and genocides, DNA and disasters. Old answers and even old questions seem irrelevant. But still we want to understand, though understand we know not what. The time has come again, that ancient time of wrenching change. As Aztec gods burned at the hands of the Spanish, as telescopes and microscopes unmasked the facades of myth and magic, again our gods fall. The shiny baubles of possessions that have held our transfixed attention, as a dangling mobile entrances the infant in a crib, are torn down by our own greedy grasp. The sparkling trophy-houses and SUV's, the hedge funds and stock derivatives, lie shattered on the floor. We stand in the crib of this world, look around at the gods and spiritual pacifiers lying on the floor, and realize we are left with...only each other...and the God revealed in the infant eyes peering through the bars of our individual cribs. Designed for the limited reading time of the modern lifestyle, the "moment for reading" format of Doubt & Reassurance weaves a continuous tapestry of deeply personal spiritual relevance by employing threads of bite-sized entries of thought provoking insight, encouragement, enlightenment, inspiration, and the occasional kick in the spiritual backside. With no institutional corner to call its own, Doubt & Reassurance calls to every corner, rattling liturgical cages and invoking surprising science. Doubt & Reassurance appeases the gnawing spiritual hunger of the modern world by addressing everyone's personal experience....the experience of the individual intellectually torn from their fundamentalist background by education; the orthodox atheist raised on science yet feeling an inexplicable sense that there must be more; the modern Asian on the way to their high tech job while commuting past the temples in which their family still worships...these diverse paths converge onto a commonly shared, universal human awareness of...?

This collection of writings from Pierre Hadot (1992-2010) presents, for the first time, previously unreleased and in some cases untranslated materials from one of the world's most prominent classical philosophers and historians of thought. As a passionate proponent of philosophy as a 'way of life' (most powerfully communicated in the life of Socrates), Pierre Hadot rejuvenated interest in the ancient philosophers and developed a philosophy based on their work which is peculiarly contemporary. His radical recasting of philosophy in the West was both provocative and substantial. Indeed, Michel Foucault cites Pierre Hadot as a major influence on his work. This beautifully written, lucid collection of writings will not only be of interest to historians, classicists and philosophers but also those interested in nourishing, as Pierre Hadot himself might have put it, a 'spiritual life'.

The Infra World written by Francois J. Bonnet and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-15 with Philosophy categories.

Traversing philosophy and the human sciences, literature, cinema, and the visual arts, this book maps out a history where all is chaos, maelstrom, and fog. If perception and language objectivate the world, if imagination structures it, if knowledge orders it, then how can we describe, name, or even apprehend that which comes to pass when language is absent, when perception vacillates, and when knowledge eludes us? How can we say, show, or make known that which undermines and refutes the order of things, the supposedly immutable real, and the administration of the sensible? This book takes us on a quest that traverses philosophy and the human sciences, but also literature, cinema, and the visual arts. Not content with analysing the ordering power of our representations, in The Infra-World François J. Bonnet also interrogates the works of artists who have experienced and experimented with those moments when they crack open, giving way to anguish and vertigo. If perception is a sieve, what can be said of that which slips through its net, how does one speak of what escapes? What remains of unqualified perceptions, of vanishing sensations? Where do the indescribable, nocturnal fears hide, the horrors lurking behind closed eyes? What of the world beneath language and objectivated sensation? What of the infra-world?

As a shy young man, Edwin is bullied by his father, Darius, but he succeeds in developing his interests in spite of a restrictive environment. The Oxford Handbook Of Atheism written by Stephen Bullivant and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-21 with Religion categories.

Recent books by, among others, Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and Christopher Hitchens have thrust atheism firmly into the popular, media, and academic spotlight. This so-called New Atheism is arguably the most striking development in western socio-religious culture of the past decade or more. As such, it has spurred fertile (and often heated) discussions both within, and between, a diverse range of disciplines. Yet atheism, and the New Atheism, are by no means co-extensive. Interesting though it indeed is, the New Atheism is a single, historically and culturally specific manifestation of positive atheism (the that there is/are no God/s), which is itself but one form of a far deeper, broader, and more significant global phenomenon. The Oxford Handbook of Atheism is a pioneering edited volume, exploring atheism—understood in the broad sense of 'an absence of belief in the existence of a God or gods'—in all the richness and diversity of its historical and contemporary expressions. Bringing together an international team of established and emerging scholars, it probes the varied manifestations and implications of unbelief from an array of disciplinary perspectives (philosophy, history, sociology, anthropology, demography, psychology, natural sciences, gender and sexuality studies, literary criticism, film studies, musicology) and in a range of global contexts (Western Europe, North America, post-communist Europe, the Islamic world, Japan, India). Both surveying and synthesizing previous work, and presenting the major fruits of innovative recent research, the handbook is set to be a landmark text for the study of atheism.

Ancient Astrology written by Julius Firmicus Maternus and has been published by Astrology Center of America this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

Julius Firmicus Maternus, a native of Sicily, was a Roman lawyer of the senatorial class. He lived in the first half of the fourth century AD (c.280-c.360). He was also a student of Greek astrology, which forms the basis of this book. Of this book, James Herschel Holden writes, "The Mathesis is the lengthiest astrological treatise that has come down to us from the classical period. It consists of eight books, of which the first forms an introductory essay on astrology, and the rest set forth the fundamentals of Greek astrology. Several sections contain material that is found nowhere else...." (History of Horoscopic Astrology, pg. 66.) The translator writes, "Magic, philosophy, science and theology combine in strange ways in the thinking of the last centuries of the Roman empire..... Firmicus seemed worthy of note for many reasons. He is almost alone as author of works produced both before and after an apparent conversion to Christianity.... He left a lengthy handbook detailing the astrological practices of his day, the only work which has come down to us in its entirety [90% complete: Holden] out of numerous astrological treatises written in the Hellenistic and Roman periods..... This manual was important because it was the channel for astrological lore to the Middle Ages and Renaissance." (from the Preface) Jean Rhys Bram holds a degree in Latin from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Classics from New York University. She taught Latin, ancient Greek, and Mythology at Hunter College until her retirement. At 92, she continues to read widely and tutor students. She enjoys the company of twelve cats.
