Excerpt from The Reconstruction of South-Eastern Europe The German militarists, in so far as they have not themselves been deceived, obviously sought to prolong and fortify the power of their caste, to justify their dominion over the obedient masses of the German people; and by adding to Germany some new provinces of the Empire as alsace-lorraine was added some forty-five years ago-they hoped to prolong the influence and the policy of their own party under the pretext that the Fatherland was menaced by the revengefulness of France or some other nation. On the other side, the Allies, at the very outset of the present world-struggle, proclaimed that they were fighting for a high European ideal for the liberties and independence of the small nations in Europe. The long-neglected rights of the smaller and weaker nations were at last to be recognised, and the new Europe was going to be based, not on the temporary equipoise of might, but on the solid and enduring basis of the equality of rights. Excerpt from The Reconstruction of South-Eastern Europe The writer of this book is a Serb who, during the war, has shared the heroic deeds and tragic sufferings of his people - deeds which have excited the admiration and sufferings which have stirred the pity and indignation of the whole civilized world. The resistance which the small Serbian nation, in defence of its liberty, has offered to the two huge military empires by which it was most foully attacked, will always rank in history with the noblest efforts ever made by any community of men to maintain their just and lawful freedom against criminal aggression. Hence the people of the British Empire, to whom the writer primarily addresses himself, will no doubt be prepared to give a sympathetic hearing to the plea which he here enters on behalf of the Serbs and their near kinsfolk the other Southern Slavs. He pleads for the formation of a strong and independent Southern Slav State to be composed of all Southern Slav peoples of pure blood, and established by the Allies as a result, and a most important result, of their victory. This plea he bases on grounds both of justice and of expediency. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Heroic Serbians: An Appeal for Help The Byzantine Empire was reduced to Constantinople and its environs, and the Turkish tide approached the very heart of the Serbian Empire I quote from V. R. Savid's The Reconstruction of South Eastern Europe) The decisive battle was at hand. The Turks, who found the Serbs a most stubborn enemy, made overtures, begging them to open them the gate of Central Europe. The Serbian nation and its rulers were sorely tempted. They knew that their forces were too small to resist the swollen Turkish flood. No help was forthcoming from any other quarter. Europe, divided and terrified, looked mute and motionless upon the unequal struggle. Should the Serbs betray their noble mission as the champions of Christendom No and Never! The Serbian songs say that the Tsar Lazar received a letter from the Virgin Mother asking him which Kingdom he preferred, the Kingdom of Heaven or the Kingdom of the Earth. Tsar Lazar and all his nation chose the Heavenly Kingdom. So in 1914 the Serbians again chose the path of Right paved as it is with broken homes, and de'solated lands, murdered people, and women shamed and slain by German and Austrian lust. The gallant nation might have made easy terms with Germany and Austria and avoided war. The Central Europe Powers wanted a clear run to Constantinople, to Salonica, and a Balkancontrol. The Serbians might have made a big commercial bargain but they would not sell their souls. As on the Day of Kossovo they fought for the preservation of Christain Europe, so in 1914 they fought for their own honour and to uphold their undertakings to the peace-loving nations of the world. The historical parallel is there. The Serbians proved the pillar of the Balkans five hundred years ago as in this vast war. The second volume of the history of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) takes up the story of how the Bank has become an indispensable part of the international financial architecture. It tracks the rollercoaster ride during this period, including the Bank’s crucial coordinating role in response to global and regional crises, the calls for its presence as an investor in Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa and later Greece and Cyprus, as well as the consequences of conflicts within its original region. It shows how in face of the growing threat of global warming the EBRD, working mainly with the private sector, developed a sustainable energy business model to tackle climate change.Transforming Markets also examines how the EBRD broadened its investment criteria, arguing that transition towards sustainable economies requires market qualities that are not only competitive and integrated but which are also resilient, well-governed, green and more inclusive. This approach aligned with the 2015 Paris Agreement and the international community’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with its core set of 17 sustainable development goals. The story of the EBRD’s own transition and rich history provides a route map for building the sustainable markets necessary for future growth and prosperity.

The "Europeanization" of European private law has recently received much scrutiny and attention. Harmonizing European systems of law represents one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. In effect, it is the adaptation of national laws into a new supra-national law, a process that signifies the beginning of a new age in Europe. This volume seeks to frame the creation of a new European Common Law in the context of recent events in European integration. The work is envisioned as a guide and written in a research friendly style that includes text inserts and an extensive bibliography. The detailed analysis and research this volume accomplishes is invaluable to those scholars and lawmakers who are the next generation of European leaders.

In Search Of The Balkan Recovery written by Christopher Cviic and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Business & Economics categories.

In the early 1990s, the Balkans was rocked by the collapse of communism and the violent breakup of Yugoslavia. Yet the last decade has seen Southeastern Europe transform into one of the most dynamic emerging markets in the world. In Search of the Balkan Recovery tracks Yugoslavia's political evolution from conflict to cooperation and the role of growing investment and trade opportunities in facilitating this recovery. Cviic and Sanfey read the history of Yugoslavia's violent disintegration against similar events in Bulgaria, Romania, and Albania. They critically examine the involvement of the international community and contrast it against the procrastination of European leaders and the more constructive "soft power" approach of the European Union, among other institutions. They also trace the recovery of Balkan economic prospects in recent years and argue that, despite our current economic crisis, the downturn in the region's economic well-being is likely to be temporary.

After The Berlin Wall written by Andrew Kilpatrick and has been published by Central European University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-01 with Business & Economics categories.

After the Berlin Wall tells the inside story of an international financial institution, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), created in the aftermath of communism to help the countries of central and eastern Europe transition towards open market-oriented democratic economies. The first volume of a history in two parts, After the Berlin Wall charts the EBRD’s life from a fledgling high-risk start-up investing in former socialist countries from 1991 to become an established member of the international financial community, which (as of April 2020) operates in almost 40 countries across three continents. This volume describes the multilateral negotiations that created this cosmopolitan institution with a ‘European character’ and the emergence of the EBRD’s unique business model: a focus on the private sector and a mission to deliver development impact with sustainable financial returns. The author recounts the challenges that ‘transition’ countries faced in moving from a defunct to a functioning economic system and maps the EBRD’s response to critical events, from the dissolution of the Soviet Union, to the safe confinement of the Chernobyl disaster site, the debt default in Russia and the onset of the global financial crisis in 2008.

Strategies Of Symbolic Nation Building In South Eastern Europe written by Pål Kolstø and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-01 with Political Science categories.

After the conflagration of Tito’s Yugoslavia a medley of new and not-so-new states rose from the ashes. Some of the Yugoslav successor states have joined, or are about to enter, the European Union, while others are still struggling to define their national borders, symbols, and relationships with neighbouring states. Strategies of Symbolic Nation-building in South Eastern Europe expands upon the existing body of nationalism studies and explores how successful these nation-building strategies have been in the last two decades. Relying on new quantitative research results, the contributors offer interdisciplinary analyses of symbolic nation-building in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia to show that whereas the citizens of some states have reached a consensus about the nation-building project other states remain fragmented and uncertain of when the process will end. A must-read not only for scholars of the region but policy makers and others interested in understanding the complex interplay of history, symbolic politics, and post-conflict transition.
