This is a science fiction novella that tells the story of Frank Keene, an American radiation engineer, and spaceship pilot. Keene and Solomon Nestor, an astrophysicist, are aboard the Limbo, surveying cosmic radiation in the Solar System's outer reaches for the Smithsonian Institution. When one of the Limbo's stern jets melts, the crew is compelled to land on Pluto in the hopes of finding some refractory metal with which to build a new jet. They are quickly apprehended and taken to the pirates' secret lair. They come across the Red Peri herself, a nineteen-year-old redhead whose late father built the Red Peri and set up the base sixteen years ago. The Red Peri says she can't let Keene and Nestor go, but she's hesitant to kill them cold-bloodedly.

This is a classic science fiction novella by Stanley G. Weinbaum that was originally published in Astounding Stories in 1935. This is the only of Weinbaum's stories to be set on the planet Pluto, written only five years after the planet's discovery. The tale starts with a spaceship called Aardkin that gets boarded by the notorious pirate ship the Red Peri. One year on Frank Keene and astrophysicist Solomon Nestor crash land on Pluto and find themselves captives of the Red Peri herself, the nineteen year-old daughter of the man who built the Red Peri. During their ordeal the secret of the reason behind her forays into piracy are revealed. This work is part of our Vintage Sci-Fi Classics Series, a series in which we are republishing some of the best stories in the genre by some of its most acclaimed authors, such as Isaac Asimov, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Robert Sheckley. Each publication is complete with a short introduction to the history of science fiction.

In the year 2180, the Solar System is at peace - except for the fearsome space pirates, of whom none is more feared than the mysterious, beautiful Red Peri, who terrorises the spaceways in the ship that takes her name. When the spaceship on which physicist Frank Keene is a passenger falls prey to the pirates, the scene is set for a showdown between him and Peri in her underground base on Pluto. And the dark and frozen planet has its own deadly inhabitants... STANLEY GRAUMAN WEINBAUM's life was tragically cut short at the age of 33, less than two years after he had published his first and greatest science fiction story, "A Martian Odyssey", with its completely alien - yet still sympathetic - alien protagonist. Nevertheless, he managed to write four novels and dozens of short stories. Weinbaum was born on 4th April 1902, in Louisville, Kentucky and died of lung cancer on 14th December, 1935.DR MIKE GOLDSMITH studied astrophysics at Keele University and has written over a hundred books and scientific papers. His "New Horizons to Pluto" is also published by Grammaticus.
