The Banbury Cross Series was a collection of 12 volumes of books edited by Grace Rhys and published in London by Dent in the 1890s. Each book is attractively illustrated with full page and partial page pen and ink drawings in a classic Art Nouveau style by leading artists of the era. H. Isabel Adams was chosen to illustrated Little Red Riding Hood and Tom Thumb. Her black and white pen and ink drawings are full of emotion and magnificently complement Rhys' adaptations of these children's favourites. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children.

The collection "Once Upon a Time" offers a new and richly illustrated version of the most famous fairytales. EXCERPT Once upon a time, there lived in the forest a poor logger’s family with seven sons. The family had no food to eat so the mother and father decided to abandon the seven sons in the forest to fend for themselves. Thorndyke.[10] One example of his approach is in The Red Thumb Mark. The story revolves in part around the Thumbograph (actually called the Thumb o'Graphs as in authographs). This was launched on the market in 1904 by the stationer and publisher Dow & Lester. It consisted of a book of blank pages, with a single page of instructions, and an ink pad attached to one of the covers.[11] Thorndyke noted on the fly-lead of his own copy of the Red Thumb Mark that the Thumbograph was available at all the railway book-stalls, and that he either bought one or got one as a gift. However, he considered it an dangerous invention, as his observations in the Finger-print Department, led him to think it possible to make false fingerprints from a copy of a fingerprint. He experimented with his own fingerprints and made a stamps that could reproduce them. Thus he tested the method that the villain uses in the book, and that Thorndyke uses to convince the court, before he wrote about it.[12]
