Many parents fear the time when their beautiful happy children will become unmanageable adolescents continually engaging in risky or destructive behaviour. Unfortunately, this view of adolescents is the focus of the media, even though it relates to just a small proportion of young people. As the large amount of research we report shows, most adolescents are responsible young people who care about their families and crave the support of their parents. It is also true, however, as much research indicates, that the quality of the relationship parents have with their adolescents is crucial to the wellbeing of those young people. We discuss the need for parents to set reasonable limits on their adolescents and to expect appropriate behavior. We also show, on the basis of research, that children who have experienced positive, caring relationships with their parents are more likely than other adolescents to behave responsibly. In other words, behavior in adolescence does not ‘come out of nowhere’ but builds on earlier experiences in the family. Because of the large amount of research reported in this volume, we expect that it will be useful to practitioners from a range of professions that are likely to focus on adolescents: social workers, youth leaders, welfare workers, religious leaders, psychologists and psychiatrists and contribute to a better understanding of young people and their development, and the importance of families to that development.

The present study provides an initial test of the theory of parental confirmation. Building on a more general theory of interpersonal confirmation, the theory was extended to focus on parent-adolescent relationships. This expanded theory suggests that adolescents who are confirmed (i.e., validated as a unique and valuable individuals) will make greater advancements in development than adolescents who are disconfirmed (i.e., discounted or rejected). More specifically, the theory emphasizes how the climate created by parental messages was related to the level of adolescent self-esteem, identity strength, and openness with their parents. An observational analysis in combination with self-report measures was employed to test the hypotheses derived from the theory. Generally, the results, particularly of the self-report data, supported the relationship between level of confirming climate and adolescents' developmental outcomes. Yet, analyses also suggested that adolescents' family satisfaction mediated this relationship. Specifically, adolescent family satisfaction fully mediated the relationship between parental confirmation and adolescent self-esteem and identity strength, whereas parental confirmation was directly as well as indirectly (i.e., though family satisfaction) related to adolescent openness. These results suggest that parental communication is linked with adolescents' perceptions of their family experiences as well as their development. Results additionally show that family satisfaction makes an independent and substantial contribution to adolescent development. Results are discussed in terms of theoretical and practical implications. Suggestions for future research are also proffered.
