The article aims at achieving three goals: to discover how the children of intermarriage view themselves religiously and ethnically; to gain some insights into the relationships between children and parents and between children and grandparents in intermarried families; and to attempt to determine whether those who grew up in an intermarried home lack a secure sense of identity tending to feel that they don't really "belong" anywhere.

Being Both written by Susan Katz Miller and has been published by National Geographic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-21 with Family & Relationships categories.

A book on the growing number of interfaith families raising children in two religions Susan Katz Miller grew up with a Jewish father and Christian mother, and was raised Jewish. Now in an interfaith marriage herself, she is one of the growing number of Americans who are boldly electing to raise children with both faiths, rather than in one religion or the other (or without religion). In Being Both, Miller draws on original surveys and interviews with parents, students, teachers, and clergy, as well as on her own journey, to chronicle this controversial grassroots movement. Almost a third of all married Americans have a spouse from another religion, and there are now more children in Christian-Jewish interfaith families than in families with two Jewish parents. Across the country, many of these families are challenging the traditional idea that they must choose one religion. In some cities, more interfaith couples are raising children with “both” than Jewish-only. What does this mean for these families, for these children, and for religious institutions? Miller argues that there are distinct benefits for families who reject the false choice of “either/or” and instead embrace the synergy of being both. Reporting on hundreds of parents and children who celebrate two religions, she documents why couples make this choice, and how children appreciate dual-faith education. But often families who choose both have trouble finding supportive clergy and community. To that end, Miller includes advice and resources for interfaith families planning baby-welcoming and coming-of-age ceremonies, and seeking to find or form interfaith education programs. She also addresses the difficulties that interfaith families can encounter, wrestling with spiritual questions (“Will our children believe in God?”) and challenges (“How do we talk about Jesus?”). And finally, looking beyond Judaism and Christianity, Being Both provides the first glimpse of the next interfaith wave: intermarried Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist couples raising children in two religions. Being Both is at once a rousing declaration of the benefits of celebrating two religions, and a blueprint for interfaith families who are seeking guidance and community support.

Straightforward and nonjudgmental advice for dating couples, partners, husbands and wives, in-laws, counselors and others. Interfaith relationships are commonplace; the challenges that go along with them are not. An interfaith couple will have to confront tough questions, yet it’s often difficult to find answers, especially when traditional sources of help—family, friends, clergy and counselors—are unable or unwilling to understand the problems. From a Jewish perspective, this book guides interfaith couples at any stage of their relationship—from dating and engagement, to the wedding and marriage—and the people who are affected by their relationship in any way, including their families and counselors who work with interfaith couples. While making no judgments or dictating answers, and supporting individual choice, topics covered include: What is an intermarriage? Why do people intermarry? When do you bring up the subject of religion? What is conversion and is it necessary? When do you discuss and decide how children will be raised? ... and much more!

Since 1991, members of the Jewish Catholic Couples Dialogue Group in Chicago have celebrated a combination Hebrew Baby Naming and Baptism ceremony as they welcome their children into the world, with the support and participation of a Catholic Priest and Reform Rabbi. These ceremonies are spiritual moments, created in the spirit of finding new pathways for interfaith families to share in their religious traditions. For some couples, their ceremony makes a statement about the religious identity of their child, either in one tradition or another. For others, it is an expression of thanks to God for new life and the wish to ask for God's blessing on their family. In either case, the celebration is an authentic manifestation of a Divine presence in their new family. In addition to the ceremony, this text includes an overview of the current literature regarding Catholic/Jewish families; a review of Hebrew Rites of Initiation as well as a short course on Catholic sacramentality and Baptism; commonly asked questions and answers facing Catholic Jewish couples; a lively conversation between a Rabbi and a Priest regarding rites of initiation; a resource section of books and websites and a closing chapter on topics of family faith formation.
