Excerpt from The Relative Claims of Etching and Engraving to Rank as Fine Arts, and to Be Represented as Such in the Royal Academy of Arts It will thus be seen, that the object of the paper is not to contrast etching as a process, with engraving as a process, the etched line with the engraved line, - and to say of one that it is better as a form of art expression than the other, though this thesis might well be maintained; and certainly not, in any sense that can be considered in the least personal, to exalt one class of artist at the expense of another; but to compare, without regard to the process employed or the person employing it, the practice of the painter-etcher who is an original artist, with the practice of the modern engraver who is not an original artist, and, by the discussion which it is hoped will follow such comparison, to arrive at an intelligible conclusion as to the comparative claims of the two to be considered branches of fine art.
