We have already had frequent occasion to characterise the relation of these religions to those which preceded them, or those whose development was contemporary with theirs. Like that of Buddhism, their rise was in general due to the unsatisfactory nature of the old Brahmanical theology, the divinities of which had gradually retired and disappeared behind a host of abstractions too subtle to affect the conscience of the masses. But in taking this step they did not, like the sect of Qakyamuni, openly sunder all connection with the past. They, on the contrary, claim to be its continuation, or rather they represent themselves to be that very past unchanged and unmodified. The most of them profess to be based on the Veda, with which at bottom they have almost nothing in common, and which they virtually superseded by a quite different literature, but to which, in spite of protestations to the contrary which they sometimes let drop,1 they nevertheless continue to appeal to as 1 For instance, in the Mah&bha-that it is the revelation of the su rata, i. 269, it is said that when the preme brahman, of which the Veda gods put into the balance on the is only the inferior expression.
