This book provides a socio-legal examination of the media’s influence on the development and implementation of criminal justice policy. This impact is often assumed. And, especially in the wake of high-profile crimes, the press is routinely observed calling for sentences to be harsher, and for governments to be tougher on crime. But how do we know that there is a connection? To answer this question, the book draws on a case study of the media reporting of the rape and murder of Jill Meagher in Melbourne, Australia; as well as other well-known cases, including those of James Bulger, Sarah Payne, Stephen Lawrence and Michael Brown, among others. Deploying a socio-legal framework to examine how the media’s often powerful and emotive narratives play a crucial role in the development and implementation of law, the book provides a deep and critical reflection on its influence. The book concludes with a number of suggestions for media reform: both to moderate the media’s influence, and to incorporate a broader range of viewpoints. This multi-disciplinary book will appeal to scholars and students in sociolegal studies, criminology and criminal law as well as those working in relevant areas in sociology and media studies.

The main objective of the scientific project was to examine the impact of media messages on interests, preferences, and, primarily, the attitudes of academic youth related to sports and physical activity. According to the researchers involved, the issue seems noteworthy, because the media has been in the process of radical transformation. One of the effects is the change in the forms and platforms of media consumption, especially among young persons belonging to the ``Z'' generation. The research team faced many probing questions. First of all, how are the interests, preferences, and attitudes of university youth to academic sports and a healthy lifestyle shaped? To what extent does the current media offer related to the mentioned topics remain compatible with them (at the level of national and academic media)? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the Polish system of media messages regarding academic sports and a lifestyle conducive to health? Secondly, attempts were made to answer the question to what extent contemporary university audio-visual media can support the concept of influencing the student community in popularising physical activity? Thirdly, To what extent can contemporary social media (available on the internet) support the notion of influencing the student environment by promoting physical activity? Finally, How can the information selection and thematic scope be shaped to influence the academic community in furthering sports effectively? We hope that this work will contribute to the proper use of all available media communication channels to improve the physical condition and health of the ``Z'' or ``C'' (i.e. Connected) generation. They do not know life and the world without the network.

The presence and influence of the media in modern times has increased to a point where they have seamlessly permeated every aspect of contemporary life, a situation that has led some to attribute them ideal qualities to promote and strengthen human rights values, while others perceive their commercial interests as an obstacle to perform such a task. This dissertation analyses the role of the media in promoting human rights, based primarily on a theoretical discussion which examines the problem from four different angles: the idealistic perception mainly promoted by the United Nations; the realistic notion defended by media theories; the challenges to the traditional media structure posed by the spread use of ICTs; and the analysis of the main contributions and limitations of the theory of Development Communication in merging both the idealistic and the realistic perceptions. The discussion reveals the existence of both common grounds and well as constraints for the media to perform the task of promoting human rights, a main conclusion being the perception that their role -although relevant- is only a supportive one, which needs to be seen in conjunction with the collaboration of other social agents in order to fully strengthen human rights values and standards.

In a democratic society, the role of the press is usually characterized by neutrality and the necessity of an informed electorate. The journalist's ethic is to present facts with minimal interpretation. Over the decades, however, this strict code has evolved and opened up, and thanks to the internet, an alternative media has risen. This has led to accusations of media bias and condemnation of certain media outlets by powerful elected leaders. The viewpoints in this volume explore the obligations of the media, the rise of satirical news outlets, and how to interpret news in a post-fact era.

The use of social media in public health education/promotion has been increasing due, in part, to its ability to remove physical access and geographical barriers for users. Specifically, social media provides an outlet to increase and promote translational health communication strategies and the effective dissemination of health information and data in ways that allow users to not only utilize, but also to create and share pertinent health information. Although social media applications in public health and health promotion have yielded success in terms of generating support structures and networks for effective health behavior change, there are challenges and complications associated with use of social media that also need to be addressed (e.g., managing misinformation, ensuring compliance with privacy protection regulations). This Special Issue aims to explore social media as a translational health promotion tool by bridging principles of health education and health communication. Broadly, this Special Issue is seeking original submissions that examine: (1) the method with which social media users access, negotiate, and create health information that is both actionable and impactful for diverse audiences; (2) strategies for overcoming challenges to using social media in health promotion; and (3) best practices for designing, implementing, and/or evaluating social media campaigns and forums in public health. Special interest will be given to innovative submissions that expand and build upon traditional health education approaches with health communication theories and models. Other manuscript types of interest include relevant position papers, brief reports, and commentaries.
