The sovereignty of God and the responsibility of man has been a topic that has been fought in many theological battlegrounds over centuries past, and we know that it will continue to be fought for centuries to come. Yet God invites us with a grand calling as we look into the souls of men that are perishing without hope and without God to desire such a weighty topic to impact us by having the right view of God, a proper perspective of our relationship to God and how it should impact our daily lives. The burden of the Lord to author this book is the desire for God to do that work in the heart of the readers as we peer into the beauty and glory of God.

Both theology and philosophy wrestle with the tension that exists between the sovereignty of God and human response. In Christianity, this tension is particularly acute as God is understood to be both omnipotent and benevolent. This tension underlies numerous other questions: about the nature of God, the meaning of human freedom and choice, the concept of divine repentance, the reign of God and supremely, the significance of the incarnation. Dr. Carson brings clear, scholarly insights and finely-honed exegetical skills to this all-pervasive issue, seeing it not so much as a problem to be solved as a framework to be explored. He examines the sovereignty-responsibility themes in the Old Testament, intertestamental literature and in the theology of John's gospel and concludes with a reflection on the theological implications for ministry and mission today.

In this classic book, John Stott shows that Christian mission must encompass both evangelism and social action. He offers careful definitions of five key terms- mission, evangelism, dialogue, salvation and conversion. Through a thorough biblical exploration of these concepts, Stott provides a model for ministry to people's spiritual and physical needs alike. Ultimately, Stott points to the example of Jesus, who modeled both the Great Commission of proclamation and the Great Commandment of love and service. This balanced, holistic approach to mission points the way forward for the work of the church in the world. Market/Audience Church Leaders Pastors Students Those interested in Evangelism Endorsements 'A short but exceedingly powerful book. Packer shows that rather than precluding evangelism, God's sovereignty provides the most powerful incentive and support for it . . . Contains impressive depth and contains a thorough and satisfying treatment of the subject.' - DiscerningReader.com 'I've often recommended this book to faithful Christians who are confused about how they are to think about prayer, missions, giving-any area in which our efforts could be wrongly pitted against God's own necessary action. Packer introduces us to clear truths, handles Scripture with exemplary care, and supplies us with just the right amount of illustrations and application.' - From the foreword by Mark Dever, senior pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. Features and Benefits New mass market edition of a classic InterVarsity Press work on divine sovereignty and human responsibility Challenges extreme views on both sides of the issue Outlines a proper incentive and support for evangelism Over 100,000 copies in print

The undeniable reality of suffering in the world often leaves humanity perplexed about its source. The struggle to make sense of pain usually leaves people wondering what they have done to merit the agony of suffering. It is hence not bizarre to hear a person in suffering ask, "What wrong have I done to be suffering this much?" "Why is God punishing me?" It is not uncommon to hear some people like Edward Schillebeecks exempt God from any responsibility in the suffering of humanity. Shillebbeeckx unequivocally suggests that God is not responsible for the suffering of humanity just as he wasn't responsible for the suffering of his Son more than two thousand years ago. In his words, "[N]o one should ascribe to God what has, in fact, been done to Jesus by the history of human injustice." But how can a tragic event like the death of the Son of God and, by extension, suffering in the world be laid solely on the shoulders of humanity? Doesn't putting the responsibility of pain and suffering in the world on humanity rob God of his all-powerful nature? To avoid this quandary vis-à-vis the nature of God, classical theologians like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas proposed the principle of the two evils, that is, evil-suffered and evil-done. They also maintained that while God may not be responsible for pain and suffering in the world, he certainly does permit or allow it for a greater good. If God only permits or allows suffering, what do we make of Marthe Robin's experience that suggests that the Risen Lord, God the Son, appeared to her, asking her, "Do you want to be like me?" And upon the question made her live the suffering and pain and carry the wounds of the Crucified Lord. According to her, she was "the little victim of the Lord."

God speaks every day. You have a responsibility to listen. The church is in a critical season. There are unprecedented crises in every segment of the world, and ungodly opinions and philosophies abound. The war over truth is raging as the idea of maintaining solidarity with Jesus Christ is growing increasingly unpopular. Since biblical days God has used the prophetic voice during times of crisis, darkness, and disaster to speak into the earth. Knowing and partnering with the thoughts, words, plans, and actions of God are not a path reserved for a select few. Being prophetic should be a priority to all Christians. Leaving the prophetic responsibility to those walking in the office of a prophet is not biblical. God wants to unleash an unprecedented outpouring of His Spirit in the earth and bring in a record-setting harvest of souls.

Our times offer abundant evidence that organized Christianity is failing to fulfill its responsibilities in bringing about the changes most desperately needed in the world. The great events of our day are occurring apart from the church, and this fact indicates to Harvey Cox that the secular world is the principal arena of God's work today. Where does this leave the organized church, the clergy, and the lay member as they witness in modern society? These are the kind of questions that Harvey Cox faces and provocatively discusses in this book. There is no doubt as to where he stands personally with regard to the issues that trouble society most deeply. He is a prophet of God's reconciliation, whether in matters of race, ecumenical relationships, or world order, and he feels that Christians who stand with him will have to enter more vitally into the secular world if they are to be agents of reconciliation. You may or may not agree with this book, but you owe it to yourself to read it.

Voting is an opportunity to promote, protect, and preserve godly government. Passing up this opportunity means allowing those who would degrade the name of Christ to have their way in our lives. The Bible is clear, "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established" (Romans 13:1). Since the Bible commands that we are to submit to government, we must ask ourselves: to what type of government do we want to submit? God in Government compellingly answers this question and covers other related subjects - often from a historical perspective. The book's emphasis is on how and why the United States has gone from being a Christian nation to a culture of secular humanism. How events like the Industrial Revolution and the Great Depression continue to impact our worldview and the way we vote. The reader will discover the true differences between the political parties, and why groups like labor unions, school teachers, and the media tend to align themselves with a particular party. Among other topics, we examine the Christian roots of capitalism and the truth behind the "separation of church and state." The book covers social issues like legalized abortion, gay rights, and welfare programs; and gives solutions and suggestions as to what Christians can do to get our nation back on track. RAY HARKER is an ideological activist and founder of God in Government, a conservative grassroots movement for which this book is the manual. Both the organization and the book are designed to educate and assist Evangelical Christians in the areas of civic responsibility and political ideology. The outreach provides lectures and seminars for churches and other interested groups. To learn more, visit www.godgov.org.

Would it be like our Father in heaven to choose to abort one of His children-never allowing for that one even the potential for life? Is this the nature of who He is? Sadly, because of an overreach in Calvinist teachings, with regard to the working out of God's sovereignty, the character of the Father has been so maligned. God is sovereign. He does what He wants to do. Nonetheless, in His perfect and ruling desire, God has chosen to limit Himself and to engage with men. Through Scripture-and in response to Calvinism-"God's Sovereignty and Our Responsibility: His Heart for All Men" establishes the Father's heart for all men, as both God's rule and man's place of agreement are rightly brought into balance.
