"Taking inspiration from a different interpretative tradition, the classic work of Raymond Brown on the birth and death of the Messiah, Francis Moloney has provided a comprehensive narrative reading of the resurrection stories of all four Gospels, in close association with their passion narratives, to which they are the stunning response. The book traces how the four eangelists' different telling of the resurrection stories has "narrated" the action of God for Jesus, and the action of God and Jesus for all Christians in and through the early Church's belief and experience of the resurrection of Jesus. The final chapter discusses what we can recover about the events of Easter day and, more importantly, what these events meant then, and continue to mean today." - back cover

The palpable inconsistencies--both major and minor--in the Gospel accounts of the Easter events have become for many an obstacle to belief in the resurrection. In order to discover the reasons for these discrepancies and the meaning of the narratives for contemporary faith, the author begins with the earliest record of the Easter tradition in 1Cor. 15, and then applies the tools of tradition and redaction criticism to the Easter narratives of the four Gospels. He reconstructs the history of the tradition from its earliest recoverable form in allegedly factual reports through its successive developments in the preliterary and literary stages. In this process, the author exposes the motivations behind the developments and shaping of the narratives into their final form.

The Resurrection Of Jesus written by Bernard Brandon Scott and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Religion categories.

The event of Jesus resurrection is like the event of creation: There were no eye-witnesses. So how does one make sense of the story of the resurrection or rather stories, for not one but many diverse reports survive from early Christianity? Brandon Scott suggests that we must begin by erasing all Christian art about the resurrection from our memory. And then forget all the sermons we heard at Easter. The best way to understand the resurrection, he argues, is to arrange the texts chronologically and observe how the story itself developed. The Resurrection of Jesus: A Soucebook begins with just such a list, compiled with commentaries by Robert W. Funk. It proceeds to a report of the Jesus Seminar s votes on the resurrection, followed by a collection and discussion by Robert Price of resurrection stories found in the Greek culture of Jesus day, and an in-depth study by Arthur Dewey of a little-known resurrection story in the Gospel of Peter. The final essays in the volume, by Roy W. Hoover and Thomas Sheehan, explore the origins of belief in Jesus resurrection and help put the pieces back together again, in ways that make sense in the modern world.

'Many Christians who find themselves affirming the reality of the resurrection gladly and meaningfully every Easter morning may find themselves in a more reflective moment not knowing quite what to make of the resurrection stories in the gospels.' This is the audience for which Professor Perrin has written. He discusses the narratives in the first three gospels, not so much asking which of them is historically correct, as, what is Mark trying to say to us by deliberately omitting appearance stories, or Matthew by locating the major appearance in Galilee, or Luke by limiting appearances to the Jerusalem area ? These are the questions that matter because they are questions about the motivations and convictions of the evangelists themselves, and unless they are understood and thought about, it will prove impossible to see what the evangelists are really trying to say.

The present volume contains the proceedings of the fourth symposium of the Novum Testamentum Patristicum project (NTP), an international re-search project on the reception history of the New Testament in the early Church. The symposium was held in October 2012 at the University of Leuven. It was organised by Joseph Verheyden, Tobias Nicklas, and An-dreas Merkt, the coordinators of NTP. The topic of the meeting was the reception of the resurrection and empty tomb stories and the development of the belief in resurrection in the early Church. The belief in the resurrection constitutes the core issue of Christianity and of Christian tradition. The earliest references to the resurrection and witnesses to such a belief are found in the canonical gospels and in the letters of Paul, but the topic obviously remained of the utmost importance all through the early Church. Contributions to this volume offer studies on reception of the resurrection and empty tomb stories and the development of the belief in resurrection in the early Church by examining the most important early references on this topic.
