Fifteen hundred years have turned history into legend... Frustrated with living in the shadow of the elder warriors, Gawain dreams of glory in a time of peace. After three generations of struggle against a flood of ruthless invaders, Britain has finally clawed its way back within reach of security and prosperity. Across the sea, Rome is crumbling under an onslaught of barbarian attacks, internal corruption and civil war. Desperate for allies, Rome's last great emperor looks to Britain and the rising fame of her High King, Arthur. Events sweep Gawain along in a tide that takes him far from his home in Britain to a terrible war in Gaul. Intrigue and betrayal vie with loyalty and valour in an epic adventure at the last, bright flash of light before "The Dark Ages." The Retreat to Avalon is the exciting beginning of a new Historical Fiction trilogy exploring the origins of the Arthurian legends, anchored in the events of the end of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the Middle Ages. AUTHOR INTERVIEW 1) What inspired you to write this story? After watching the movie, Excalibur, my future bride asked me some questions about King Arthur and his knights, so I proceeded to go full history nerd on her. I described some of the theories, including Geoffrey Ashe's, and wondered how it might have played out in history if true. I wished that someone would write a story about it and it occurred to me that I should puzzle it out. 2) What do you find fascinating about King Arthur? I love the mystery of the Dark Ages. The history surrounding Arthur's era is fascinating, with the Roman Empire collapsing in the west, tribal migrations, wars and new nations forming. Most people have never read the original stories about Arthur and his warriors, before the Knights of the Round Table and other later legends developed. Did you know they were more likely to fight giants than dragons? 3) How hard is it to bring real historical events to life in an Arthurian novel? It's not easy. There are very few records from the time period, and much of what exists is fragmentary or contradictory. Timelines are especially frustrating, partly because everyone used different dating schemes then, or guessed at dates. Historical references to Arthur are very sparse. 4) Did you discover anything about Arthur and the knights of the round table that you didn't expect? There is so much! One is that some of the older legends portray some negative aspects about Arthur. A very surprising bit of research into the legends and backgrounds of different characters showed that some details about St. Illtud, one of Arthur's knights in early legend, might have had some seed of truth to the story. 5) Can you tell us a little about the next book in the series? The consequences of the events of the first book take shape in the second book. While the first book covers a bit over a year and has much to do with the main character's journey, the next story covers many years, is more personal, darker, grittier. Tragic, but heroic, like an epic should be.

Avalon: The Retreat is a compelling account of how one group of survivalists endures the worst event the world has ever known - a Nuclear World War. * * * * * Mike heard the sirens go off and knew it was time to leave; he hoped the others had already gotten the secret message and were on their way as well. He felt the adrenalin rush through his body as he hurried to meet them and set in motion what they had planned for the last six years. They all hoped this day would never come, but he was glad now that they were prepared to meet it head-on. As he rode through the streets on his motorcycle, he knew that he could never return to this place. Chaos would reign quickly and, little known to him, what was left of civilization was already crumbling to its lowest form of humanity. Mike's people were warrior residents who had the foresight to prepare for the inevitable and make step-by-step preparations to protect themselves and each other. Radio announcements warned everyone to stay inside their homes, but that wasn't going to happen for Mike and the others. They knew they would have to meet at the first rendezvous spot, gather what they needed and head on to the next. They had planned routes to each cache to protect themselves from the "unfriendlies" that were already out in full force. As he rode quickly toward the first cache, the words from the radio played over and over in his head: It's my sad duty to inform you that a nuclear device was detonated in Atlanta, Georgia a few moments ago. Casualties are running high and details are sketchy. Stay tuned for further developments. Mike knew that this was only the beginning of events in a "WORLD GONE MAD!" * * * * * Avalon: The Retreat incorporates real survivalist skills to help prepare you for that fateful day when catastrophe strikes. It could very well be sooner than you think! Are you prepared? * * * * * Further description: Mike Reynolds has the foresight to prepare for the unthinkable and finds a group of like-minded people who join together and buy a mountain retreat called Avalon. Their preparations over the years save their lives and eventually the lives of others. They methodically put into order a plan that helps them not only survive, but thrive! With his friend, Dr. Daniel Crowley, the two discover an old 19th Century abandoned cattle ranch, purchase it, and set out to find just the right people who help them plan for what others refuse to see - that the end of the United States of America and the world, as we know it, is imminent. Much of the U.S. and the world is eradicated by atomic bombs, radiation poisoning, starvation, plague, and all the atrocities that would prevail in a World Gone Mad! Gangs of thieves and thugs ban together to enslave the weaker men and women and even resort to the most unthinkable atrocity known to the human race - cannibalism. The folks at Avalon have food and all the amenities because they built a real sanctuary that offers protection to those who had the foresight to prepare ahead for a just-in-case disaster. Eventually they join up with a neighboring town once terrorized by the feudal Slavers and help free them from their subjugators. If you have ever wondered how to put together a retreat, stock it, and prepare it for any eventuality of cataclysmic proportions, Avalon is a must read. You'll see how they did it and realize that you can do it too!

Having had several earlier skirmishes and months of preparation, Bone Breaker and his crew of biker thugs know they'll have their revenge on those farmer hicks this time But Mike Reynolds and Sam Wolchak, two of the so-called farmers, are ready for the next battle with these would-be dirtbag overlords. Meanwhile, a military convoy sets out from Oregon and heads down the coast to California. Losing many along the way, some are killed by evil doers among the carnage and mayhem, and others abandon their posts to try and find their families. Eventually meeting up with Mike Reynolds and his band of survivors, the ultimate test is yet to come. Can they conquer the motorcycle murderers and thieves or will they fall to the outlaws? One thing is clear: the future of a new America depends on them. -+-+-+-+- Avalon: The Retreat, the first installment of the Avalon trilogy, introduced a great cast of characters recovering from the devastating effects of a nuclear invasion of the United States. The survival skills and advance preparation shared here demonstrated that there can be survival after holocaust. In Avalon: Beyond the Retreat, the same great characters move on to the next step, establishing sense and order out of the chaos left behind from two devastating attacks on the United States. While this struggle seems hard enough, there are new and unprecedented challenges. Amoral gangs form. With their mission to rape and pillage the remains of the country and its survivors, incredible acts of human ignominy run rampant. Add the nightmare of an incurable plague, with all of its consequences, and the going just gets tougher. Stragglers and small communities of survivors struggle against seemingly insurmountable odds in an effort to recapture any sense of their former lives. The Avalon Retreat members play a key role in providing assistance and leadership for the unfortunates, while establishing order from confusion. Punctuated with poignant personal stories, the Avalon survivors are personalized, and share their fears, hopes, and souls. Author Rusin takes us on a hell-bent ride into the future. The possibilities of this novel becoming predicting the future are all too imminent. Read the news, and see how comfortable you feel about the likelihood of this fictitious scenario becoming reality. Rusin does not intend to scare. But he very much wants to suggest that we prepare. Prepare yourself for an experience that will leave you deep in thought, and looking forward to the third book in this series, Avalon: Wormwood

Religious strife, Glastonbury legends, the bones of King Arthur and the curse of the Tudors... can astrologer John Dee help the young Queen Elizabeth to avoid it? It is 1560, and Elizabeth Tudor has been on the throne for a year. Dr John Dee, at 32 already acclaimed throughout Europe, is her astrologer and consultant in the hidden arts... a controversial appointment in these days of superstition and religious strife. Now the mild, bookish Dee has been sent to Glastonbury to find the missing bones of King Arthur, whose legacy was always so important to the Tudor line. With him - hardly the safest companion - is his friend and former student, Robert Dudley, a risk-taker, a wild card... and possibly the Queen's secret lover. The famously mystical town is still mourning the gruesome execution of its Abbot, Richard Whiting. But why was the Abbot really killed? What is the secret held by the monks since the Abbey was founded by Joseph of Arimathea, uncle of Christ and guardian of the Holy Grail? The mission takes Dee to the tangled roots of English magic, into unexpected violence, necromantic darkness, the breathless stirring of first love... and the cold heart of a complex plot against Elizabeth.
