The Agamemnon is the first play of the Oresteia trilogy, which won Aeschylus a first prize in 458 BCE. It presents the return of Agamemnon to his home in Argos after the fall of Troy, as his victorious homecoming soon gives way to the horrors of an ancient curse and the consequences of vengeance. With its accounts of war, sacrifice, confessions, prophecy, and prayer, this tragic drama begins both a brutal and compassionate journey toward redefining justice. Through the use of syllabic verse, this new version maintains an organic link with the original Greek text, while recreating the music of poetry in contemporary speech for reading and performance.

The sense of difficulty, and indeed of awe, with which a scholar approaches the task of translating the Agamemnon depends directly on its greatness as poetry. It is in part a matter of diction. The language of Aeschylus is an extraordinary thing, the syntax stiff and simple, the vocabulary obscure, unexpected, and steeped in splendour. Its peculiarities cannot be disregarded, or the translation will be false in character.

The war is over and the hero returns. But what good is a hero without a war? What else does he know but warfare? And his city has managed without him. The gap left by his departure has closed. Yet the problems he left behind have remained. They have lain dormant. But his return revives them.

Aeschylus' Oresteia opens with Agamemnon sacrificing his daughter to the gods; an act which sets in motion a bloody cycle of revenge and counter-revenge. When he in turn is killed at the hands of his wife Clytemnestra, their son Orestes takes up the mantle of avenging his father, continuing the bloodshed until peace is ultimately found in the rule of law. Zinnie Harris reimagines this ancient drama, using a contemporary sensibility to rework the stories, placing the women in the centre. Orestes' leading role is replaced by his sister Electra, who as a young child witnesses her father's murder and is compelled to take justice into her own hands until she too must flee the Furies. The three plays that comprise This Restless House can be performed on their own or as part of a continuous evening. Part one being Agamemnon's Return plays on its own, then parts two and three The Bough Breaks and Electra And Her Shadow play as different parts of the same evening.

Agamemnon - Aeschylus - Translated by E.D.A. Morshead - Aeschylus begins in Greece describing the return of King Agamemnon from his victory in the Trojan War, from the perspective of the towns people (the Chorus) and his wife, Clytemnestra. However, dark foreshadowings build to the death of the king at the hands of his wife, who was angry at his sacrifice of their daughter Iphigenia, killed so the Gods would stop a storm hindering the Greek fleet in the war. She was also unhappy at his keeping of the Trojan prophetess Cassandra as a concubine. Cassandra foretells of the murder of Agamemnon, and of herself, to the assembled townsfolk, who are horrified. She then enters the palace knowing that she cannot avoid her fate. The ending of the play includes a prediction of the return of Orestes, son of Agamemnon, who will seek to avenge his father. Aeschylus; c. 525/524 - c. 456/455 BC, was an ancient Greek tragedian. His plays, alongside those of Sophocles and Euripides, are the only works of Classical Greek literature to have survived. He is often described as the father of tragedy: critics' and scholars' knowledge of the genre begins with his work, and understanding of earlier tragedies is largely based on inferences from his surviving plays. According to Aristotle, he expanded the number of characters in theater to allow conflict among them, whereas characters previously had interacted only with the chorus.

The importance of this topic, the return home of a hero, is shown in light of the diverse cultural background of thie motif, showing how the elements of Homer's narratives were to be developed by later Greek poets, and particularly the 5th century tragedians and the Hellenistic poets.
