Excerpt from The Return of Arthur The Great War, instead of giving new im pulse to my quest for Arthur, blotted him for the time from my mind. Yet in England where my friend and I chanced to be in August, that agonizing August, of 1914, as the tumultuous weeks passed, one of the most incredible things to witness at this altogether incredible time was the organization, or rather the creation of Kitchener's Mob, an army tumbled together with magical swiftness from every corner of England, an army unversed in everything military save honor and splendor of Spirit, the scorn of super-drilled German divisions, the salvation of a reeling world. It was Kitchener, the master personality of his time, who called this army into being. Yet it was not until long after Kitchener 's tragic death that revelation flashed blindingly upon me. Excerpt from The Great Return Reuter, apparently, thought he had made his simple statement of the facts of the case, had thereby done his duty, and so it all ended. Nobody, so far as I know, ever wrote to any paper asking what Reuter meant by it, or what the Tashai Lama meant by it. I sup pose the fact was that nobody cared two pence about the matter and so this strange event - if there were any such event - was exhibited to us for a moment, and the lantern show revolved to other spectacles. Excerpt from Stories From King Arthur: And His Round Table More than fifteen centuries ago, England was inhabited by a Celtic race known as the Britons; but, in the first century of the Christian era, they were conquered by the Romans, who added Britain to their vast empire. When, in the fifth century, the Romans withdrew, the unhappy Britons had forgotten how to govern and how to defend themselves, and fell an easy prey to many enemies. Picts from Scotland invaded the north, Scots from Ireland plundered the west, and the Angles and Saxons poured across the seas and wasted the land. Many of the Britons were slain; those who escaped sought refuge in the mountainous parts of the west from Cornwall to the Firth of Clyde. There they took the name of the Cymry, which means the "Brethren," though the people then in England, unable to understand their language, spoke of them contemptuously as the "Welsh." or the "Strangers." The struggle went on between the two races and nowhere more fiercely than in the south-west, where the invaders set up the Kingdom of Wessex; but at last there arose among the Britons a great chieftain called Arthur. And so in history, Arthur, the hero of such a mass of romantic story, is little more than a name. In the reign of the third Norman king, Henry I., there lived a Welsh priest known as Geoffrey of Monmouth, who wrote a "History of British Kings." It is quite certain that he did not write history, but he collected legends about British heroes, and invented stories of his own. Excerpt from King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, Vol. 1 of 3: A Modernized Version of the "Morte Darthur" This is history as Geofi'rey Of Monmouth under stood it, but hardly so in the modern sense, and Arthur remains as mystical a figure as Achilles, despite the efforts of various writers to bring him within the circle Of actual kings. After the Romans left Britain, two centuries passed Of whose history hardly a coherent shred remains. This was the age of Arthur, one of the last champions Of Celtic Britain against the inflowing tide of anglo-saxon invasion. That there was an actual Arthur there is some, but no very posi tive, reason to believe. After all the evidence has been offered, we still seem to have but a shadowy here before us, a king of shreds and patches, whose history is so pieced out with conjecture that it is next to impossible to separate its facts from its fancies.
