Christianity had brutally planted the poisoned blade in the healthy, quivering flesh of all humanity; it had goaded a cold wave of darkness with mystically brutal fury to dim the serene and festive exultation of the dionysian spirit of our pagan ancestors. In one cold evening, winter fatally fell upon a warm midday of summer. It was christianity that, substituting the phantasm of "god" for the vibrant reality of "I", declared itself the fierce enemy of the joy of living and avenged itself knavishly on earthly life. With christianity Life was sent to mourn in the frightful abysses of the most bitter renunciations; she was pushed toward the glacier of disavowal and death. In November 1910, shortly after the inauguration of Brazilian President Hermes da Fonseca, ordinary sailors killed several officers and seized control of major new combat vessels, including two of the most powerful battleships ever produced, and commenced bombing Rio de Janeiro. The mutineers, led by an Afro-Brazilian and mostly black themselves, demanded greater rights—above all the abolition of flogging in the Brazilian navy, the last Western navy to tolerate it. This form of torture was closely associated in the sailors' minds with slavery, which had only been prohibited in Brazil in 1888. These events and the scandals that followed initiated a sustained debate about the role of race and class in Brazilian society and the extent to which Brazil could claim to be a modern nation. The commemoration of the centenary of the mutiny in 2010 saw the country still divided about the meaning of the Revolt of the Whip.

The present volume of al-Ṭabarī's monumental history covers the years 255-265/869-878, the first half of the reign of the Abbasid caliph al-Muʿtamid in Sāmarrā. Although the decade was one of relative calm in the capital, compared with the anarchy of the years immediately preceding, danger signals were flashing in territories adjacent to the imperial heartlands. Chief among them was the revolt of the Zanj, the narrative of which occupies the bulk of the present volume. A people of semi-servile status, the Zanj, who were based in the marshlands of southern Iraq, were led by a somewhat shadowy and mysterious figure claiming Shi'ite descent, 'Ali b. Muhammad. Their prolonged revolt against the central authorities was not crushed until 269/882. Al-Ṭabarī's account of these momentous events is unique in both the quality and the quantity of his information. He himself was present in Baghdad during the years of the revolt, and he was thus able to construct his story from reports by numerous eyewitnesses. The result is a detailed narrative that brings alive for the modern reader the main personalities and engagements of the revolt.

The Revolt Against Civilization (Or, The Menace of the Under-Man) by American historian, journalist, and political scientist Lothrop Stoddard, was originally published in 1922. With the work, Dr. Stoddard examines the point where egalitarian revolutionary movements -- particularly the French Revolution and its ultimate offspring in the 20th century, the Bolshevik revolution -- intersect with human biodiversity. His thesis is that civilisation imposes increasing intellectual and moral burdens on the less able strata of the population, causing growing frustration, restlessness, and feelings of worthlessness among their members, who, meanwhile and due to differential birthrates, grow in number and proportion; eventually, when the pressure becomes unbearable, they rise up in revolt-- a revolt against civilisation. Stoddard examines the gradual depletion of cognitive and moral capital from the population due to low fertility among elites and high fertility among the underclasses; the role and methods of 'tainted geniuses' in mobilising discontent, particularly during the French and Bolshevik revolutions; and the ticking dysgenic time-bomb in the United States. Stoddard stresses that averting disaster and improving society demand active policy changes aimed at reversing negative trends and encouraging positive ones, and that these changes will not be made without the development of an eugenic conscience. Rather than the creation of a caste system or an aristocracy, neither of which would guarantee an overall betterment of the population, he proposes fostering the growth of a neo-aristocracy, founded on ability and merit. Stoddard's perspective on these matters is unique in that it is both progressive and elitist. Both his trenchant analysis of socio-political population dynamics and his critique of egalitarian revolutionary movements prove astonishingly prescient in an increasingly troubled and turbulent West.
