In today's multicultural and multireligious societies, humour and comedy often become the focus of controversy over alleged racist or offensive content, as shown, for instance, by the intense debate of Sacha Baron Cohen's characters Ali G and Borat, and the Prophet Muhammad cartoons published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. Despite these intense debates, commentary on humour in the academy lacks a clear way of connecting the serious and the humorous, and a clear way of accounting for the serious impact of comic language. The absence of a developed 'serious' vocabulary with which to judge the humorous tends to encourage polarized debates, which fail to account for the paradoxes of humour. This book draws on the social theory of Zygmunt Baumann to examine the linguistic structure of humour, arguing that, as a form of language similar to metaphor, it is both unstable and unpredictable, and structurally prone to act rhetorically; that is, to be convincing. Deconstructing the dominant form of racism aimed at black people in the US, and that aimed at Asians in the UK, The Rhetoric of Racist Humour shows how racist humour expresses and supports racial stereotypes in the US and UK, while also exploring the forms of resistance presented by the humour of Black and Asian comedians to such stereotypes. An engaging exploration of modern, late modern and fluid or postmodern forms of humour, this book will be of interest to sociologists and scholars of cultural and media studies, as well as those working in the fields of race and ethnicity, humour and cultural theory.

Blackness and the Rhetoric of Racism examines blackness and the rhetoric of racism in two student protest movements, the Rhodes Must Fall Movement (RMF) at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and the Concerned Student 1950 Movement (CS1950) at the University of Missouri in the United States. A rhetorical analysis of the public addresses in these movements suggests that black discursive responses to racism are a distinct discourse within the rhetoric of racism, which is frequently ignored in rhetorical scholarship on racist discourse. While the rhetoric of racism is concerned with naming racist ideology to transcend negative racial difference, I argue that the presence of black discursive responses to racism complicates the rhetoric of racism in that it simultaneously affirms, subverts, and resists the rhetoric of racism. In this case, both of these two movements illustrate the link between black discourse and the rhetoric of racism in that students employ black discourse to disrupt perceptions of racism in academic settings with university-wide policies built on racial inclusion intended to transcend negative racial difference.

In this book Adam Banks uses the concept of the Digital Divide as a metonym for America's larger racial divide, in an attempt to figure out what meaningful access for African Americans to technologies and the larger American society can or should mean. He argues that African American rhetorical traditions--the traditions of struggle for justice and equitable participation in American society--exhibit complex and nuanced ways of understanding the difficulties inherent in the attempt to navigate through the seemingly impossible contradictions of gaining meaningful access to technological systems with the good they seem to make possible, and at the same time resisting the exploitative impulses that such systems always seem to present. Banks examines moments in these rhetorical traditions of appeals, warnings, demands, and debates to make explicit the connections between technological issues and African Americans' equal and just participation in American society. The Rhetoric of Race: Toward a Revolutionary Construction of Black Identity analitza el llegat dels principals estudiosos de la identitat afroamericana: W. E. B. Du Bois, Alain Locke i Amiri Baraka. El propòsit d'aquest volum és investigar i criticar les seues idees per tal de mostrar fins a quin punt els seus esforços a l'hora de crear una definició de la identitat negra no foren tan fructífers com es podria pensar. El llibre tracta d'elaborar una definició revolucionària de la identitat emmarcada dins les següents posicions teòriques: l'exigència del reconeixement d'un passat de sofriment, la rèplica d'allò negatiu respecte a l'afroamericà i la crida-resposta com a forma de comunicació negra. Tot fent servir la retòrica com a punt de partida, s'intenta justificar aquesta construcció des de les posicions filosòfiques defensades per Michel Foucault i Gilles Deleuze. Les idees de Foucault són la base per analitzar les possibilitats que inclou aquesta identitat negra de resistència davant el poder, mentre que les de Deleuze són útils a l'hora d'investigar el replegament cap a si mateix que aquesta identitat realitza per a crear un espai intern. Tot i que forma part d'allò extern, aquest espai intern esdevé punt de trobada de tots els aspectes històrics d'aquesta identitat, ja que parla del que ha estat, és i serà. d'una altra banda, s'argumenta ací que aquesta trobada interna amb les seues múltiples parts porta aquesta identitat a projectar un jo positiu quan ha d'afrontar allò extern. l'anàlisi de les idees d'investigadores afroamericanes com ara Barbara Smith i bell hooks fa de conclusió. El capítol 5 exposa les conclusions a les quals arriba aquest estudi. s'hi analitza la importancia de la música hip-hop dins el món contemporani per a la comunitat afroamericana. Per la seua força cultural i lingüística, el hip-hop posseix el potencial necessari per a construir una idea positiva del que és ser negre als Estats Units per a la joventut afroamericana actual.
