Various esti mates of the extent of this loss have appeared from time to time but none Of those deserving attention places the destruction at an amount which would materially affect the value of the comparative statistics presented herewith. It is otherwise with reference to the statistics of the coin in the country. While those relating to silver are probably as correct as those of the paper circulation, the amount of gold in the country is largely a matter of estimate; and an important difference of opinion has, from time to time, become mani fest.
