I was considering writing these memoirs for some time, wondering if anybody will be interested to spend time reading something produced by a nonprofessional writer. In the last twenty-six years of my activity, I was a full-time professor of pathology at the University of South Carolina, School of Medicine. In this capacity, I wrote scientific reports and reviews, lecture handouts, and protocols and a good number of grant proposals. None of those would qualify as literature, and they were not supposed to. This is not said to excuse my lack of professional experience, just to explain my hesitation in approaching this challenge. I should add that English is actually only my third language, Romanian being my native language, and French that of my maternal grandmother and the rest of my family in France.

What I learned is that the major goals of my life were set up by an authority which I called destiny. This authority conducted events along pathways that led to the fulfilment of those goals. These events were either causal determined or were synchronized and were set up by destiny which seemed to be devoid of human feelings. The overwhelming intervention of destiny in life does not exclude the potential use of free will but it was not apparent that that will improve the outcome.

The Balkans has long been a place of encounter among different peoples, religions, and civilizations, resulting in a rich cultural tapestry and mosaic of nationalities. But it has also been burdened by a traumatic post-colonial experience. The transition from traditional multinational empires to modern nation-states has been accompanied by large-scale political violence that has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands and the permanent displacement of millions more. Mark Biondich examines the origins of these conflicts, while treating the region as an integral part of modern European history, shaped by much the same forces and intellectual impulses. It reminds us that political violence and ethnic cleansing have scarcely been unique to the Balkans. As Biondich shows, the political violence that has bedevilled the region since the late nineteenth century stemmed from modernity and the ideology of integral nationalism, employed by states that were dominated by democratizing or authoritarian nationalizing elites committed to national homogeneity. This volume examines to what extent the positive atmosphere created by the Helsinki Accords contributed to the change in political circumstances seen in the countries of Central Europe, under Soviet domination. It focuses in particular on - firstly - a consequent new impetus to bolster human rights in international politics, as Western democracies - especially the US - integrated human rights concerns into its foreign policy relations with Soviet Bloc countries and - secondly – how this Western embrace of human rights seemed to create new incentives for increased dissident activity in Central and Eastern Europe and from 1976 onward. Finally, the book reminds us of the significant role of the Helsinki Accords in developing democratic practices in Eastern European societies under Soviet domination in 1975-1989 and in creating the conditions for the peaceful transition to democratic government in the years that followed.
