Thus the Cape labour market received a severe check, and clamour for servants became loud on all sides. In 1797, however, in consequence of the most urgent representations which had been made to him, General Craig sanctioned the landing of 350 slaves from a Portuguese vessel from Mozambique, which was then at anchor in Table Bay.
