This is the story of how an unknown and lowly Englishman came to be thrust onto the international stage with world-changing effect. While Thomas Paine is known by all Americans as one of their founding fathers, he remains relatively obscure in Great Britain. Thomas Paine's skill as a writer was recognised by George Lewis Scott, a commissioner of Excise, who was at the height of English society. Scott had been trying to reduce the corruption that was endemic in the Excise Service, Paine had suffered it at first hand. This was in 1772 in Lewes, the County town of East Sussex while Paine was still just an outrider of Excise. Paine articulated the argument in his first pamphlet, but despite 4000 copies being printed the four years-long campaign came to nought. It was this effort that exposed the bungling and corrupt ministry and convinced Paine to try his hand in the North American Colonies, which was already aflame from the poor treatment by the United Kingdom. Paine left England with a letter of introduction from Benjamin Franklin. Within a year Paine had written Common Sense, the document that kindled the War of Independence. Paine followed this with 13 Crisis papers that were highly influential in steadying the American troops in the fight against their mother country. This story uses previously unseen documents from the Treasury boxes in the National Archives in Kew. Several strands have been drawn together that show that the United Kingdom was in deep disarray and that it was these factors that drove the emergent United States of America to break free from the United Kingdom.

Tom Paine’s America explores the vibrant, transatlantic traffic in people, ideas, and texts that profoundly shaped American political debate in the 1790s. In 1789, when the Federal Constitution was ratified, "democracy" was a controversial term that very few Americans used to describe their new political system. That changed when the French Revolution—and the wave of democratic radicalism that it touched off around the Atlantic World—inspired a growing number of Americans to imagine and advocate for a wide range of political and social reforms that they proudly called "democratic." One of the figureheads of this new international movement was Tom Paine, the author of Common Sense. Although Paine spent the 1790s in Europe, his increasingly radical political writings from that decade were wildly popular in America. A cohort of democratic printers, newspaper editors, and booksellers stoked the fires of American politics by importing a flood of information and ideas from revolutionary Europe. Inspired by what they were learning from their contemporaries around the world, the evolving democratic opposition in America pushed their fellow citizens to consider a wide range of radical ideas regarding racial equality, economic justice, cosmopolitan conceptions of citizenship, and the construction of more literally democratic polities. In Europe such ideas quickly fell victim to a counter-Revolutionary backlash that defined Painite democracy as dangerous Jacobinism, and the story was much the same in America’s late 1790s. The Democratic Party that won the national election of 1800 was, ironically, the beneficiary of this backlash; for they were able to position themselves as the advocates of a more moderate, safe vision of democracy that differentiated itself from the supposedly aristocratic Federalists to their right and the dangerously democratic Painite Jacobins to their left.

The American Crisis is a pamphlet series by the Enlightenment philosopher Thomas Paine, written during the American Revolution. Paine wrote these pamphlets in order to motivate people in the Colonies to join the war for independence from Britain. The pamphlets were contemporaneous with early parts of the American Revolution, during a time when colonists needed inspiring works. Paine, like many other politicians and scholars, knew that the Colonists weren't going to support the American Revolutionary War without proper reason to do so. They were written in a language that the common man could understand, and represented Paine's liberal philosophy. Paine also used references to God, saying that a war against Kingdom of Great Britain would be a war with the support of God. Paine's writings bolstered the morale of the American colonists, appealed to the English people's consideration of the war with America, clarified the issues at stake in the war, and denounced the advocates of a negotiated peace. Often known as simply The Crisis, there are sixteen pamphlets in total which Paine signed with the pseudonym, "Common Sense." Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was an English-American political activist, philosopher, political theorist, and revolutionary. One of the Founding Fathers of the United States, he authored the two most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution, and he inspired the rebels in 1776 to declare independence from Britain. The common Sens is a pamphlet by Thomas Paine published for the first time without the author's name January 10, 1776, during the American Revolution. Paine has benefited during its drafting, comments Benjamin Rush who gave him the title. The denunciation of the British administration in Common Sense has enjoyed immense popularity that helped foment the American Revolution. For the historian Howard Zinn, "it was the first vigorous defense of the idea of independence in terms that could be understood by any person who can read." The second edition was quickly followed by a third edition, with a report on the value of the British Navy, an increased schedule, and a response to criticism by the Quakers, published February 14, 1776. Unlike an elitist literature addressed mainly to the gentlemen, Thomas Paine wrote The Common Sense in a simple and accessible to as many style, devoid of Latin quotations and references savantes. This text "went on to sell nearly 150,000 copies in the space of a few months," says the historian Jean-Michel Lacroix, who advance it embodies "the appearance of an early national sentiment" . Thomas Paine, born January 29, 1737 Thetford in Britain and died June 8, 1809 in New York, USA, is an intellectual, pamphleteer, revolutionary British, American and French. He is known for his commitment during the American Revolution for Independence of the thirteen British colonies in North America. He outlined his position in a famous pamphlet Common Sense, published a few months before the signing of the American Declaration of Independence in 1776. His writings, which include Rights of Man (1791), also had a great influence on the players of the French Revolution he was elected to the National Assembly in 1792. Considered by the Montagnards as an ally of the Girondins, he gradually sidelined, including Robespierre and imprisoned in December 1793. After the Terror, he was released and had some success with his book The Age of Reason (The Age of Reason, 1793-1794) that analyzes Christianity and advocates of Deism. In Agrarian Justice (1795) 1, analyzes the origins of property rights and introduced the concept of basic income, close to the minimum wage. Thomas Paine remained in France until 1802, during which he criticized the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte, calling the First Consul of "most perfect charlatan that ever existed." 2 At the invitation of President Thomas Jefferson, he returned to the United States where he died in 1809 at age 72.

Tom Paine's 'Agrarian Justice' (1797) continues to inspire progressive politicians today as a source of two contemporary policies, Land Value Taxation and Universal (Basic) Income (Citizen's Income). His starting point was the belief, widespread until the end of the eighteenth century, that the Earth is the common property of humankind. Rather than advocating the common ownership of land, he proposed that landowners 'owe to the community a ground-rent', the market rent of their land. He advocated that this be paid into a fund to be used for the benefit of all, both as a lump sum payment on reaching adulthood and as a pension for older people. He is well worth reading for his passion and rhetoric. This publication also includes a riposte written in the same year by Thomas Spence, who had published a similar but more radical proposal in 1776. It also contains a 20th century re-statement of individual and common rights to the Earth and a summary of the relevance of Agrarian Justice today.
