"The River Will Bend" is a small story, one trickle venturing out to inevitable currents ahead. It negotiates bumpy youthful attempts at laying claim to adulthood and the floundering across any age following loss. On the journey down life's stream, there will be constant challenge in being too young or too old to understand. I wonder if that distance from something far greater might be less, if our vision went beyond the river's bend.

IS THERE A WARNING BEFORE THE MOMENT LIFE SHATTERS INTO PIECES? In 1968 two young Vietnamese sisters flee to Saigon after their village on the Mekong River is attacked by American forces and burned to the ground. The sole survivors of the brutal massacre that killed their family, the sisters struggle to survive but become estranged, separated by sharply different choices and ideologies. Mai ekes out a living as a GI bar girl, but Tam’s anger festers, and she heads into jungle terrain to fight with the Viet Cong. For nearly ten years, neither sister knows if the other is alive. Do they both survive the war? And if they do, can they mend their fractured relationship? Or are the wounds from their journeys too deep to heal? In a stunning departure from her crime thrillers, Libby Fischer Hellmann delves into a universal story about survival, family, and the consequences of war.

Jacob and Sarah Rawlings had a dream. Their hearts' desire was to travel across the open prairie lands and settle in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Sarah struggled during her pregnancy but kept it to herself, not wanting Jacob to postpone their travelling west, endangering her and the baby's life. They set off in early April, leaving Independence, Missouri, in 1843, headed for their new home in the valley. The trip is wrought with death along the trail joined with the struggles of those individuals on the train fleeing failures of the past, seeking a new life in a new place. The trip is filled with a mixture of tragedy and blessing. Jacob and Sarah nearly lose their lives with God sending help from a most unexpected source. We learn again of God's love toward us and of His amazing grace that brings us through the most difficult times. As the storms rage across the open prairie and the difficulties along the trail threaten to destroy those seeking a new land, the wagon master must use every ounce of his strength and skill to deliver those that have entrusted their lives unto him. This is indeed a story of those with dreams and others whose dreams are shattered, leaving sorrow and defeat in its wake. The reader will be carried along with the travelers in the wagon train and become involved in a most amazing journey experiencing what many of the early settlers passed through on their way to a new life in a wild and beautiful new land.

This book provides a detailed account of what camp meeting was (and still is) like with a daily log that covers every major event and service. This account includes summaries of sermons delivered by its presidents and evangelists of the past and present, an abundance of photographs culled from archives, and three appendices containing a record of past presidents, a year-by-year roster of camp officers, platform speakers, and other camp workers, along with the transcript of a sermon delivered by President W. G. Nixon in 1926. This book is more than just a history of a Wesleyan holiness camp meeting; it is a rich narrative of temporal and eternal things that will ignite the reader's imagination of what God has done through the sanctified lives of those whose goal was to provide a place where the call to holiness would be preached and an invitation given for all to be filled with the Holy Spirit enabling them to love God with all their heart, mind, and soul, and their neighbor as themselves. At the very least, this book is a reminder of life's greatest value and the reason for being. This book provides a detailed account of what camp meeting was (and still is) like with a daily log that covers every major event and service. NATIONAL BESTSELLER • In a narrative that moves with dreamlike swiftness from India to England to Africa, the Nobel Prize-winning author produced his finest novel, a bleakly resonant study of the fraudulent bargains that make up an identity. "A masterpiece." —Los Angeles Times Book Review The son of a Brahmin ascetic and his lower-caste wife, Willie Chandran grows up sensing the hollowness at the core of his father's self-denial and vowing to live more authentically. That search takes him to the immigrant and literary bohemias of 1950s London, to a facile and unsatisfying career as a writer, and at last to a decaying Portugese colony in East Africa, where he finds a happiness he will then be compelled to betray. Brilliantly orchestrated, at once elegiac and devastating in its portraits of colonial grandeur and pretension, Half a Life represents the pinnacle of Naipaul's career.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • At once an incredible adventure narrative and a penetrating biographical portrait—the bestselling author of River of the Gods brings us the true story of Theodore Roosevelt’s harrowing exploration of one of the most dangerous rivers on earth. “A rich, dramatic tale that ranges from the personal to the literally earth-shaking.” —The New York Times The River of Doubt—it is a black, uncharted tributary of the Amazon that snakes through one of the most treacherous jungles in the world. Indians armed with poison-tipped arrows haunt its shadows; piranhas glide through its waters; boulder-strewn rapids turn the river into a roiling cauldron. After his humiliating election defeat in 1912, Roosevelt set his sights on the most punishing physical challenge he could find, the first descent of an unmapped, rapids-choked tributary of the Amazon. Together with his son Kermit and Brazil’s most famous explorer, Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon, Roosevelt accomplished a feat so great that many at the time refused to believe it. In the process, he changed the map of the western hemisphere forever. Along the way, Roosevelt and his men faced an unbelievable series of hardships, losing their canoes and supplies to punishing whitewater rapids, and enduring starvation, Indian attack, disease, drowning, and a murder within their own ranks. Three men died, and Roosevelt was brought to the brink of suicide. The River of Doubt brings alive these extraordinary events in a powerful nonfiction narrative thriller that happens to feature one of the most famous Americans who ever lived. From the soaring beauty of the Amazon rain forest to the darkest night of Theodore Roosevelt’s life, here is Candice Millard’s dazzling debut. Look for Candice Millard’s latest book, River of the Gods.

The River Bend is a collection of fifty-six boyhood reminiscences about growing up in the River Bend country of south-central Oklahoma, in the first decades of the Twentieth Century. These little stories first appeared as a weekly column in the Konawa Leader, a Seminole County, Oklahoma, newspaper owned and published by Ed Gallagher. This book is my response to the mountain of correspondence from readers of the column who almost invariably began their letters with: "Have you written a book about this wonderful place?" The "Bend" is twenty-five square miles of rolling hills, scrub oak, and briar patches separated from the rest of the world by the wide and sometimes cantankerous South Canadian River. The nearest town, located in the mouth of the horseshoe bend, is Konawa, which has one paved street and whatever was left standing after the tornado of 1966. The eleventh and last child of a very poor dirt farmer, I grew up thinking I was rich. My family owned a one-hundred-sixty-five-acre farm in the center of the Bend, and on all sides of us were neighbors who seemed like kinfolks. The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl were words no one ever used in my presence.
