I remember the first time I met John, or "Johnny B" as most folks referred to him - it was at his daughter, Melody's wedding rehearsal, where I was best man for my friend Jeff. John was dressed in his best attire - new blue work pants with suspenders, blue suit with a white shirt and a navy colored neck tie. He had difficulty finding shirts with a large enough neck, so instead of the top button holding his shirt collar together, the task was forfeited to the necktie. He and his wife Anne had married a bit later in life, as did both his daughters, so he was 79 years old at the time of Melody's wedding. Anne told him, with a voice still slightly tainted with a Slovak accent, "Papa, when you walk Melody down the isle, walk straight. Don't walk like an old man." John looked at her over his glasses and said, "I AM an old man."

The US higher education system is on the verge of a revolution, so some observers claim. Archibald and Feldman, leading analysts, provide an incisive overview of the challenges facing and possibilities for America's universities and colleges in their training future generations. And they demonstrate that our higher education system is resilient and adaptable enough to weather the internal, external, and technological threats without changing campuses beyond recognition. The Road Ahead for America's Colleges and Universities examines the threats posed to the current health of higher education by rising tuition and falling government support, as well as from new digital technologies rippling through the entire economy. Some predict disaster, pointing to high costs, exploding debt, and a digital tsunami that supposedly will combine to disrupt and sweep away many of the nation's higher education institutions, or change them beyond recognition. Archibald and Feldman provide a more nuanced view. They argue that the bundle of services that four-year colleges and universities provide will retain its value for the traditional age range of college students. Less certain, Archibald and Feldman argue, is whether the system will continue to be a force for social and economic opportunity. The threats are most dire at schools that disproportionately serve America's most underprivileged students. At the same time, growing income inequality reduces the ability of many students and their families to pay for higher education. Archibald and Feldman suggest a range of policy options at the state and federal level that will help America's higher education system continue to fulfill its promise.

How do the benefits of higher education compare with its costs, and how does this comparison vary across individuals and institutions? These questions are fundamental to quantifying the productivity of the education sector. The studies in Productivity in Higher Education use rich and novel administrative data, modern econometric methods, and careful institutional analysis to explore productivity issues. The authors examine the returns to undergraduate education, differences in costs by major, the productivity of for-profit schools, the productivity of various types of faculty and of outcomes, the effects of online education on the higher education market, and the ways in which the productivity of different institutions responds to market forces. The analyses recognize five key challenges to assessing productivity in higher education: the potential for multiple student outcomes in terms of skills, earnings, invention, and employment; the fact that colleges and universities are “multiproduct” firms that conduct varied activities across many domains; the fact that students select which school to attend based in part on their aptitude; the difficulty of attributing outcomes to individual institutions when students attend more than one; and the possibility that some of the benefits of higher education may arise from the system as a whole rather than from a single institution. The findings and the approaches illustrated can facilitate decision-making processes in higher education.

My passion is that information must be shared with parents and students about the opportunities to attend college through grants, scholarships, fellowships and work-study. The family must understand the importance of early preparation (consistent study habits), good grades and completing applications for funds by the deadlines. The opportunity to obtain a free education, with a present and future (work) position, is highly possible. HEAR WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE ROAD TO A COLLEGE EDUCATION. Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee said of The Road to A College Education: "As I helped pack the last of my three children off to college in the fall of 2000, I was realizing that getting ready for college is a family affair--the student has to choose the school, the course of study, and a roommate, but the parents have to think about how to afford it and cope with the departure' of that special gift from God who is moving out for more than a summer camp. My friend, Rubye Graham-Emerson, has prepared a simple yet helpful book that gives some driving tips along The Road to A College Education. I hope you'll enjoy the trip!" "Rubye Graham-Emerson has dedicated herself to young people. Her book, The Road to A College Education, is but one product of that dedication. This book provides the practical information needed to equip parents, teacher, counselors, pastors and youth workers in their work of providing hope for and a plan for higher education. I commend it to you. U.S. Senator Y. Tim Hutchinson, (R-Ark.) "Isn't it ironic that self-sufficiency originally starts with support from others? This book does a wonderful job proving that point as it explores the important roles parents, the home environment, the schools and even the Bible have in relation to getting an education. It is truly refreshing to see how the author expounds on the Biblical perceptiveness of pursuing an education. I strongly believe that helping students get the proper state of mind is key to creating an atmosphere conducive to learning. It is encouraging to see that someone of Rubye's insight would care enough about students to write this type of helpful material...material that explores the behind the scenes type of information they need to know. This book will be a benefit for students from all backgrounds as they journey through the educational process. Dr. Alton Garrison, Senior Pastor, First Assembly of God, North Little Rock, Arkansas. Rubye Graham-Emerson's book, The Road to A College Education, is filled with practical tools and sound research-based information that is a must have for all parents. Packed with helpful suggestions, this book could serve well as the read map for all families wanting their children to achieve their fullest potential and attend a college of their choice. The Road to A College Education provides a practical, step-by-step guide for planning and determining your options for attending the top colleges. Thank you, Rubye, for your valuable insight and dedication to helping all young people achieve their greatest dream. Ms. Cynthia Klumpp, Arkansas Promise Coordinator.

Cut through the noise and make better college and career choices This book is about addressing the college-choosing problem. The rankings, metrics, analytics, college visits, and advice that we use today to help us make these decisions are out of step with the progress individual students are trying to make. They don't give students and families the information and context they need to make such a high-stakes decision about whether and where to get an education. Choosing College strips away the noise to help you understand why you’re going to school. What's driving you? What are you trying to accomplish? Once you know why, the book will help you make better choices. The research in this book illustrates that choosing a school is complicated. By constructing more than 200 mini-documentaries of how students chose different postsecondary educational experiences, the authors explore the motivations for how and why people make the decisions that they do at a much deeper, causal level. By the end, you’ll know why you’re going and what you’re really chasing. The book: Identifies the five different Jobs for which students hire postsecondary education Allows you to see your true options for what’s next Offers guidance for how to successfully choose your pathway Illuminates how colleges and entrepreneurs can build better experiences for each Job The authors help readers understand not what job students want out of college, but what "Job" students are hiring college to do for them.

Explores the current context, role, and challenges of post-secondary education and presents options for promising pathways forward. The post-secondary educational system has undergone dramatic changes and experienced immense stress in the past two decades. Once regarded as the logical next step toward career opportunities and financial security, higher education is a subject of growing uncertainty for millions of people across the United States. It is more common than ever to question the return on investment, skyrocketing cost, and student debt burden of going to college. Prospective students, and many employers, increasingly view attending institutions of higher learning as inadequate preparation for entering the 21st century workforce. High-profile scandals—financial impropriety, sexual abuse, restrictions of free speech, among others—have further eroded public trust. In response to these and other challenges, leading voices are demanding strengthened accountability and measurable change. Higher Education's Road to Relevance illustrates why change is needed in post-secondary education and offers practical solutions to pressing concerns. The authors, internationally recognized experts in college-level teaching and learning innovation, draw heavily from contemporary research to provide an integrative approach for post-secondary faculty, staff, and administrators of all levels. This timely book helps readers identify the need for leadership in developing new networks and ecosystems of learning and workforce development. This valuable book will help readers: Understand the forces driving change in higher education Develop multiple pathways to create and credential self-directed learners Promote access to flexible, cost-effective, and relevant learning Adapt structures and pedagogies to address issues and overcome challenges Use an inclusive approach that extends to employers, K-12 educators, post-secondary educators, and policy-makers, among others Higher Education's Road to Relevance is a much-needed resource for college and university administrators, academic researchers, instructors and other faculty, and staff who support and interact with students.
