In a unique chronicle, Margret Hargreaves-Allen travels across South East Asia, exploring the ancient and contemporary landscapes of Buddhism, and the link between the two. Visiting both lesser-known and notable temples, she follows the now-vanished "Royal Way", the long route of Khmer temples that leads from the middle of present-day Thailand all the way to Angkor itself. Her journey takes her from Bangkok to north and south Thailand, into Laos and Cambodia, and ultimately to Buddhism's source in India. Part reflection, part narrative, her journey leads the reader from diverse monuments such as Wat Phu, Khao Phra Viharn and Angkor, to Ajanta and Ellora in India, and to many more. The author's insights into the temples eschew a conventional academic appreciation. Instead, a sense of wonder at the temples' survival is qualified by a culturally unbiased observation of life in a modern Buddhist country. At the culmination of the journey the narrative takes on a more personal dimension, when an unforeseeable event momentarily fuses the ancient and modern practices of Buddhism. The result is a book that will inspire a renewed appreciation of the subtleties of Buddhist life and art, a book which will inspire travellers both familiar and unfamiliar with Thailand and the temples.

From the ninth to the fifteenth century, the Angkor Empire was the greatest civilization in Southeast Asia, reaching from the coast of Vietnam to Myanmar, from southern Laos down to the Malay Peninsula. At the heart of this great kingdom ruled by god-kings rose the magnificent towers of Angkor Wat and the nearby capital city of Angkor Thom. The rulers of Angkor were great builders and engineers. They fed their people with a sophisticated irrigation system that made the Cambodian plains green year-round, and they built a network of roads connecting the capital to all the major outlying cities. Along the Royal Roads of Angkor is a photographic journey following those royal roads, featuring 165 stunning images of the many beautiful Angkor-period temples and monuments in Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Photographer Hitoshi Tamura has also captured scenes along the road recording the contemporary lives of the descendants of the Khmers, Chams, Thais, and Mon and Qoi peoples of ancient Angkor. An informative text by Yoshiaki Ishizawa treats the rise and fall of the empire, and the achievements of its rulers, and discusses the important temples and other buildings in detail.

This booklet was made by me intermittently coming and going to Cambodia's borders between 2005 and 2009. The border changed further after I recorded it by putting together the one for a long time. There are also things that have modernized. Moreover, the time one causes, and I might not be able to fit the border as a content. The border also repeats the upheaval turbulent as well as the capital and the old capital that much. At the same time, human rights and social issues stand out in countries where the scars of the civil war are tailed. However, how much is the border opening informed here achieved? The road surface is depicted as red clay or not. It's my interest in extremely trivial and everyday things. I also incorporate the scenery seen from the side of the road. This is an essay that I focused on them. 「Passion Highway!? Angkor Wat Cambodia」is the standard way to Angkor Wat by land. Here, many people and vehicles pass from ancient times. And even now, many people and vehicles pass through here. This is the border. What is common throughout each chapter is as follows: I wrote and spelled it to the last centering on the appearance of the border. In this booklet, I write the most important road running in the center of the country and the path along the KOHKONG on the sea side. There are three borders that come out here. Chapter 1 is the border of ARANYAPRATATE・POIPET, well known as the land border of Thailand and Cambodia. Chapter 2 is the border of HATLEK・KOHKONG on the sea side border. Chapter 3 is the border of MOCBAI・BAVET, famous as the border between Vietnam and Cambodia. The chance to do this work becomes it like this. I have been reporting on information magazines for Japanese people published in Thailand since the 1990s. Such a thing is in me. So, as an extension of the matter, I got down to this. In the latter half of the 2000s, I will come and go again between the land-side border and the sea-side border. So,I write that it's changing, and as a book, I'm putting it together. Now I can clearly see my impressions along the road. Then, there is this and that that it did not think for me. It is a difference of the impression when I compare the road of the border in the middle of the civil war and the road of the border while the civil war ends, and sightseeing progresses. The person's coming and going are not spared here now. Therefore, I may change the road from the appearance of the doorway of the reborn border to the name "Highway". I might add word "Highway". I think this place has come at such a time. Chapters 1 and 3 are presumed to have the image of the Old Highway. Then, I think that an old-fashioned highway has passed the time which had been shut down by the civil war. For me, here is like the one that the traffic of the person and the thing to Angkor Wat revives. On the other hand, the path to Angkor Wat in Chapter 2 is a little different. Against the backdrop of the surrounding land, the mountains on the border here stand out somewhat higher than the land in the neighboring area. Therefore, it is thought that the mountain which looks high has closed the relation between two opposite areas. Otherwise, it might have been the one of a thin relation. However, from now on, it seems that this place will approach the era of prosperity through economic activities little by little. As a factor, a bridge was made on the sea side border between Thailand and Cambodia. In addition, the presence of the sea route from ancient times was weak. However, there is a famous Sihanouk building as a fishing port when a present Cambodia side is advanced along the sea even if it says so. The presence in this country may have been unexpectedly large for a long time.

Angkor And The Khmer Civilization written by Michael D. Coe and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with History categories.

The ancient city of Angkor has fascinated Westerners since its rediscovery in the mid-nineteenth century. A great deal is now known about the brilliant Khmer civilization that flourished among the monsoon forests and rice paddies of mainland Southeast Asia, thanks to the pioneering work of French scholars and the application of modern archaeological techniques such as remote sensing from the space shuttle. The classic-period Khmer kings ruled over their part-Hindu and part-Buddhist empire from a.d. 802 for more than five centuries. This period saw the construction of many architectural masterpieces, including the huge capital city of Angkor, with the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious structure. Numerous other provincial centers, bound together by an impressive imperial road system, were scattered across the Cambodian Plain, northeast Thailand, southern Laos, and the Delta of southern Vietnam. Khmer civilization by no means disappeared with the gradual abandonment of Angkor that began in the fourteenth century, and the book's final chapter describes the conversion of the Khmer to a different kind of Buddhism, the move of the capital downriver to the Phnom Penh area, and the reorientation of the Khmer state to maritime trade. Angkor and the Khmer Civilization presents a concise but complete picture of Khmer cultural history from the Stone Age until the establishment of the French Protectorate in 1863, and is lavishly illustrated with maps, plans, drawings, and photographs. Drawing on the latest archaeological research, Michael Coe brings to life Angkor's extraordinary society and culture. 130 illustrations, 22 in color.
